  1. How about with facts and omissions... First, this is a "blurb", not a story, so I don't have ANY faith in it. A REAL story would actually include SOME kind of FACTS to go with it. So, I went digging for FACTS. First, I found the note at Politico.com (I'm assuming it's the real deal) http://www.politico.com/static/PPM110_090925_document2.html It basically states that Sec. 7203 of the US Tax Code holds the answer to the question. So, I looked for 7203, and found it at Syracuse, U. (again, I'm assuming it's the real deal) http://trac.syr.edu/laws/26/26USC07203.html So, the REAL question is... is the individual mandate "penalty" a "tax"? Obama says it isn't, his tax guy says it is, and the proposed bill which contains it has yet to make it (with it's 564 amendments, by the way) to the floor of either the House or the Senate. I'd expect that at least one member of Congress knows what wording to use to make something a "penalty" and not a "tax".
  2. and here's a partial score from Coeburn ... 12.
  3. MJD SHOULD do Hurley, since it's homecoming, and the other BDD teams are far, far away. Of course, they might not have a game. Didn't talk to Lloyd this week.

  5. Figure it's reunion time. Looking for a member of the class. Anyone with info, let me know.
  6. Yeah, I pulled out the basketball sheet by mistake on the Group II stuff - was in a hurry. The 1970 AAA title wasn't decided by vote, AND it wasn't done on the field. All 4 Regions had a championship game. N.W.ern : James Wood (10-0-1) 25, William Fleming 6 (Sat., 11/21) Central : Henrico (10-1) 20, Thomas Dale (9-2) 8 (Wed., 11/25) Northern : George Marshall (10-1) 26, Thomas Edison (8-3) 2 (Sat., 11/28) Eastern : problem - had regular season games set for Thanksgiving Day with great teams... Newport News (8-2) upset (9-1) Hampton 16-7 & (10-0) Maury beat (4-5-1) Granby 54-26. That put Maury in the finals against 9-1 Woodrow Wilson. Wilson won the game at Norfolk's Foreman Field 16-6 on Dec 4th, the same weekend the A & AA title games were played. Since Wood was the only team left that had zero losses, and had the best winning % (.9545 to .9091), they were declared state champs.
  7. Some coaches agreed... that's why they changed the ratings sytem so you could get points from your losses, too.
  8. AAA state champs didn't start until 1970. Graham woulda been the "Group 1" champs ... the smaller schools, like Garden, were "Group 2". The '62 team barely beat Tazewell 7-6. Don Necessary said they went 8-2, but Marshall Johnson said 9-1. Maybe, in some box somewhere, I have more info on that. I think no offiicial playoff games were held b4 1970, although there were post-season "bowl" games in places like Richmond, NoVa and/or Tidewater (again, I'd have to dig). I do rem. Richmond had a Thanksgiving "bowl game" in 1970, held after the playoffs had started.
  9. Battle did play all 10 teams, but 1 game didn't count for them, so all teams had 9 games that counted in the district standings. The ratings determined the #1 seed. Abingdon had a higher rating thanks to Tazewell's bonus points AND the non-district win. The system then was 9 points for beating AA, 6 points for beating A, and 1 bonus point for every win by a team you beat.
  10. They & Deputy Cledus will be at the World Chicken Festival. Sept. 25-26 in London (NOT Hazard) Ky. Proceeds go to the SE KY chapter of the Red Cross. http://www.thetimestribune.com/entertainment/local_story_261085511.html/resources_printstory

  12. I got a major shock after the game. Some girl called wanting to know the score. When I told her, she was like 'Wow... I'm so proud of 'em', or something like that... it was such a surprise, I really don't rem. exactly what she said. All I could say was "You have no idea how long it's been since I've heard somebody say that".
  13. Can't say this is why, but some ppl. say that if a team gets down 8-0, it gets to 'em a bit, because most of the time, even when they answer, they're still behind, and that messes with their head. If you get that 8-0 lead, then you can go XP's the rest of the night and the other team can't beat you just by playing even.

  15. If so, hope the board's ready to put their money where their month is. Broken contracts aren't cheap.
  16. Okay. 1.) Bland doesn't have a football team. 2.) There are probably other non-VHSL schools in VA with lower numbers that have teams. 3.) The VHSL numbers are for grades 9-12. 4.) VHSL-reference isn't the VHSL. 5.) The VHSL numbers show Hurley with 208 (using the realignment numbers) in Fall, 2007 and 201 (using the Division numbers) in Spring, 2009. http://www.vhsl.org/files/rr-adoptedplan-09-11.pdf http://www.vhsl.org/files/fb-divisions-2009-10.pdf
  17. When I was at RU, it took me 2.5 hours to get to my apt. near McAdos, and the 1st Tunnel was the half-way point. It takes me 45 minutes to get to the Ernie, so that leaves 30. Knock off 5 from Food City to the tunnel and 3 from Ernie to CH, that makes 22. (Of course, I never had/have "rush-hour traffic" to deal with... and I drive the speed limit whenever possible.)
  18. From the light atop Claypool Hill to Mitchell is about 20 minutes.
  19. Meanwhile, Tenn. seems to have more knowledgeable writers... "The game night atmosphere on a Friday night in Clintwood can pretty much be described like that in the movie Hooisers when Hickory High took the court. "
