  1. [ QUOTE ] any turnovers? [/ QUOTE ] At halftime, no. I've missed some of the game since halftime, but I know there have been at least two by Princeton now. Ponder intercepted a pass at the 3 yard line, and this last score, was due to a fumble recovery by Mike Miller...fumble caused by Joe Stone.
  2. Bluefield 7 Princeton 0 at the half Rushing Bluefield 15 rush 78 yards Princeton 21 rush 29 yards Passing Bluefield 4-10 55 yards Princeton 1-6 7 yards Total offense Bluefield 133 yards Princeton 36 yards
  3. Bluefield 7 Princeton 0 Halftime Story of the game so far? Wasted opportunities and penalties for Bluefield. Should be at least 14-0, possibly even 21-0. Bluefield can move the ball, Princeton doesn't seem to be able to. Sounds like Princeton is running the spread, with 1 RB, 4 WR, and no tight end.
  4. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Bluefield 7 Princeton 0 5:52 remaining in the 2nd quarter TD Jake Lilly from 3 yards out [/ QUOTE ] Thanks for the info.. I'm in huntington and can't get the game online. Keep me updated if you will! [/ QUOTE ] If you have speakers, here is the link to the webcast: http://www.network1sports.com/stations/wkoy.php

  8. [ QUOTE ] I posted a couple that I took on the Bluefield Beavers My Space page. However, I'm not professional by any means. There is a good action shot of Brooks stiff-arming D. Lane of Graham to the ground... [/ QUOTE ] Sent you a private message...looking for that page.
  9. I always like to see some good game photos, and of course the BDT's website is horrible. Just curious if some of the local folks took pictures and uploaded them to the web.
  10. [ QUOTE ] Well "buddy" you showed your intelligence by the use of profanity. Not only do you not know basketball, you dont have much of a vocabulary either. Maybe Gilliard would have stayed if all the "FANS" didnt think win it all or fail. You do know only one team can wil it all each year, right. [/ QUOTE ] I don't think fans are expecting to win it all, every year. The point is what the coach does with the talent he has, and many fans felt that Gilliard did not do a good job of using the talent he had. The thing I see and hear is that he was making poor coaching decisions. A good coach is defined by using the players he has to their best abilities. If someone were to take a bunch of 5'9" slow guys to a 0.500 record, that would be a good coaching job, but to do the same with a group of 6'5" speedsters...not a good job. The success isn't just defined by the record, it's defined by whether the team under-achieved or over-achieved. And it appears Gilliard left to get his dream job, not due to what he could (or couldn't) do at Bluefield.
  11. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] who are all the transfers for graham, bluefield, and princeton over the years??? bluefield to princeton-- kris krondon, jamie ealy, tony wallace, matt maddow bluefield to graham-- milton byard graham to bluefield-- shaun dews, will cole princeton to bluefield-- mike davis, jonathan repass, jt powell, levi beckett also, arent the Berraras kids from pikeview??? i also remember too that there was a Farris kid that transferred from graham to tazewell in '89 or '90 what other notable transfers have happened in the past???? [/ QUOTE ] "Oh, come on!!! There's got to be more transfers from Bluefield to Graham...that's the only reason Graham EVER wins a game..."...end quote of typical Bluefield fan... [/ QUOTE ] Aww, I wouldn't go THAT far. :-) There were a lot more transfers back in the day, although my mind is a complete blank. I know that one of the issues back then was the cost of transferring. If I remember correctly, the Tazewell County school board would only charge some trivial amount for a kid to transfer there, like $50 per year. The other way, to transfer to Bluefield, it was more, I believe. I had a neighbor who moved to the Virginia side, to the townhouses at Sedgewood, but stayed at Beaver...and I think they had to pay for that. In the end, I understand that the Tazewell Co. school board has cracked down on it, as they were getting extra bodies that caused the need for more teachers, more instructional space, etc...but not money to cover it. It's a problem lots of places. It is here in Atlanta. So many high schools, so many good football players, and a lot of kids will transfer under some interesting circumstances, all for a bid to get playing time. I simply can't imagine it...the high schools here are mostly 1800+ kids, with quite a few in the 2000-2500 range, and a few in Gwinnett County in the 3500-4500 range. Making the team is a lot of work, and most of the kids platoon. Very few, if any, play both ways. They don't have to...the teams are loaded with talent.

[/ QUOTE ] One other Bluefield to Princeton transfer was the Isabelle that was a lineman. I can't remember the specifics...think he was Raymond's younger brother. He was a 300 pound+ defensive lineman.
  13. [ QUOTE ] PEOPLE WILL YOU PLEASE LISTEN TO ME TONEY WEBSTER IS EMPOYEED BY THE WEST VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER OF THE MERCER COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM. AND AS LONG AS YOU ARE A SUB YOU ARE CONSIDERED PROFESSIONAL (tired of yelling) in other words he never has to re-apply for any of his coaching jobs where as if he was not a substitute teacher he would have to re-apply each and ever year but since he is he gets as much respect as any actuall teacher at Bluefield High School [/ QUOTE ] You really don't have to yell. I'm not in Bluefield, which is why I asked the question. If Tony is indeed a substitute teacher, and is a school board employee, then it's all good, and he's just as much a legitimate candidate as anyone else. I'm actually glad my second-hand information was wrong.
  14. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] If webster isn't a school system employee, I bet he don't get it! If Gaither comes back, everyone will want a shot at a title and he knows how to get it! [/ QUOTE ] i promise u i bet ansel wont even play if gaither is ther cause webster wont be but webbie is a scool board emploie [/ QUOTE ] Is Tony Webster a school board employee? I got the impression he wasn't, but I'm not in the area. At some point, I got the idea that he was a volunteer coach. If there are players that would bail because their choice isn't the one chosen as coach, that does NOT say something good about them. I'm really disappointed, and hope you're wrong. [/ QUOTE ] Sorry to quote myself, but I am now hearing that Tony Webster isn't a school system employee, and also doesn't have a teaching certificate, so my understanding is that he can't be the head coach. Can anyone verify any of that? Word is, Tony works for the City of Bluefield, and his coaching work is all volunteer.
  15. [ QUOTE ] He's a bluefield beaver. So he's making that prediction with neither choices you listed..lol Bluefield 35 Princeton 7 Christiansburg 28 Graham 7 Tazewell 35 Gate City 45 Blacksburg 21 Giles 0 Richlands 28 Honaker 7 [/ QUOTE ] Actually, he was asking GHS84 about his pick. Turns out they (GHS84 and Blu) both chose Richlands to lose.
  16. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] VT has number 1 campus food... i guess we are all getting fat in our own ways. [/ QUOTE ] Things have changed SOOO much since the mid to late 80s. It was horrid back then. My parents always heard me complain about it, and when they came down for Parents Weekend, they ate at the dining hall with me. Took 'em 5 minutes to tell me, that if I wanted to move off-campus, they were OK with it. There were no specialty shops then. It was all cafeteria food. Owens, Deitrick...same food, different view. [/ QUOTE ] Remember that fish-like stuff they used to serve called "scrod"??? We all called it New River Suckerfish. The only time the food was close to good was the one night each semester they'd serve the London broil. I got fat on pizza and beer...Backstreet's rules!!! [/ QUOTE ] I remember scrod...I know I wouldn't touch the stuff. I also remember Turkey Tetrazini....aka Turkey Tetrachoride. I had one of the little hot pot thingies, and a good supply of Ramen Noodles. That, and the guy down the hall got pizza every night. His dad was the GM of some big Bristol-area car dealership. The guy is now a judge. Hard to believe he made it to law school, he had such a hard time making it to class or the dining hall.

  18. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] The entire WVVA operation is amateur hour now. It's fairly pathetic. [/ QUOTE ] this is true does everyone remember when the newest weather guy came he couldn't pornoounce names of cities and sturterd like he needed speach class... the best news is the one with the girl that used to be at wvva [/ QUOTE ] I do remember several years back, a weather guy couldn't pronounce Richlands. He said it as RICH-lands, as opposed to the proper rich-LANDS.

  20. [ QUOTE ] The band was sounding really good at the game last night. I could tell that everyone really stepped it up this week and they busted their butts to get the show and the other tunes into good shape. If they keep up the work every week, they will be an excellent band by the 4th or 5th week of the season. Good work! [/ QUOTE ] My dad didn't have good things to say about the band, but then again, he can be overly negative some times, so I learn to take what he says with a grain of salt. How big is the band this year? Bigger or smaller than the last few years? One thing that has always disappointed me is the size of the band. Then again, Mel always chose quality over quantity. My ex-wife was in the Graham band, and they apparently had some folks who played "silent". Made the numbers look big, but the sound didn't match. The word was, Graham band was open to anyone who wanted to be in it (the ex told me this, I sure can't vouch for it),a nd Bluefield was a lot more competitive. My first cousin was the band director at Princeton for a few years several years back, and he really messed up their band, according to my dad. Dad says they sound better now. One thing I have always, always liked is the sound of the band coming up the hill into the stadium, with the drumline playing a cadence.
  21. [ QUOTE ] I just got finished video from WVVA's website of their Football Friday feature from this past Friday night. It was absolutely horrible and painful to watch. They were showing highlights from one game and talking about another game. They didn't even show or tell the scores on a number of games they highlighted. And during one set of highlights there was dead silence for a good 10 seconds and then you hear "Uh touchdown." It must have been amateur hour on Friday night or something. Are the sports guys always that horrible? [/ QUOTE ] Hey, at least it's not Woody Morgan. He used to get so confused. Favorite phrase... "Gotta love it" when he'd get sidetracked, and need useless filler. The Charleston/Huntington stations always did a much better job of covering Friday night football, as did WDBJ in Roanoke. They'd have their own show after the news.
  22. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I know a few years back, they scheduled that private school from over in Pikeville, KY. I don't think they want to do that again, as that school was loaded with talent. I heard that they recruit heavily, which many private schools do, I think, even though it's technically not legal to do so. [/ QUOTE ] First, the legality of recruiting depends on whose rules you're following. In WV, KY, NC or TN, private schools compete with publics in football, so it's a no-no (see Brentwood). In Va., privates don't follow VHSL rules. Now, my question is - what school are you talking about? I'm not aware of a private school (big enough to have a football team) in Pike County, let alone Pikeville. [/ QUOTE ] Well, it's been a few years, so I don't rememeber specifics, but from a quick search, it appears that the Pikeville schools are an independent district, controlled by the city of Pikeville. I can't remember if that is what the deal was, or if it was something else. Whatever it was, there were apparently a lot better than they let on. I know that up in Paintsville, there is, or was, a private school. I think the public school is Johnson County, and there was a private school on downtown Paintsville. Maybe someone can remember more about this...
  23. [ QUOTE ] Gaither wont be applying for the Basketball job, a friend talked to him at the gas station and he said he'd have a better shot at being the new band director [/ QUOTE ] I'm drawing a blank on the history. Why did Gaither leave when he did? I got the impression he was burned out on it, or it was because his son was done. To me, with his past good history, I would think Gaither would be a good choice...why is he rumored to think he's not a viable choice? Is there some friction between him and someone running the school? I went to school with Tony Webster. He's a good guy. Still, if I had any pull (I obviously don't), I'd like to see Gaither.
  24. [ QUOTE ] Hey B-Hokie....I'm in the N.Gwinnett H.S. area now....used to live in Collins Hill H.S. area. The almost new Mill Creek H.S. at Hamilton Mill, if, I remember correctly, will have over 4000 this year. (Sorry, I'm getting away from the original thread theme) Yes, it is astounding what we have around us....but, OUR HOME area doesn't have ALL the traffic we endure every day. I'm so GLAD I grew up in a rural area where simplicity is still to be desired and cherished, even, among us who have been surrounded by so much. Not trying to wax poetic....but all in the VA/WVA area of this board, appreciate the beauty you have and where you live. OH yeah.....GO Tornado...the reason I'm on this board. [/ QUOTE ] It's a tough balance. I have so much respect for where I grew up, but at the same time, a lot of sadness for the lack of work to keep people there. Every time I go home, I see more things closing, whereas here, I see new things popping up all the time. The job and tax situation just doesn't bode well for the SW Virginia/Southern WV area, although the Virginia side comes out a little better. Population-wise, I have to remember that at a touch over 5 million, metro Atlanta is bigger than all of WV, and is not much smaller than the whole state of Virginia. I live in Roswell, which has a little more of a "small town" feel (relatively speaking), but the population, at 90,000, is about the same as Roanoke VA. Sandy Springs is 90,000. Marietta is 60,000+. The one thing I don't prefer about here is indeed the TRAFFIC. I am so tired of it. On a good day, I can get home from work in 35-40 minutes, and that's about 20 miles.
