  1. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] If the girl is smart enough, and it sounds like she is, she shouldn't have any problem with taking four AP classes next year. And someone PLEASE let her know, it isn't the end of the world if she isn't the Validictorian...lots of people have never earned that title and still received plenty of scholarships to pay for school...and most of them have done fine in life... When I was in HS, we didn't have any AP classes. I took the hardest schedule possible, no one else in our class could say they took the classes I took...four years of English, five years of math, five years of social studies, four years of science, two years of foreign language, two years of art, two years of PE/Health, computer class, typing class, general business class, and a creative writing class...never got grades for band and/or annual staff like some of my classmates did. I only had one B ever in high school and it was in art class because I called the teacher an overweight, female dog (long story...Mr. Stone took care of things with that situation though). I finished 10th in my class with a 3.975 GPA on a 4.0 scale...we had six validictorians that had 4.0's (all six had at least one year of band/and or annual staff to their credit) and three salutatorians that finished with 3.9875 GPA's (all of which had at least one year of band/and or annual staff to their credit). I still got into the college of my choice and earned enough scholarships to pay for school (until I screwed that up once I got to college...but that's another story). The girl has NOTHING to worry about! [/ QUOTE ] I know she has nothing to worry about. But when you work as hard as this girl has for the past four years, doing all she can to make the best grades she can, then have the scholarship that you had "locked down" torn out from under you...it doesn’t seem fair. I have NO doubt that she will still get scholarships, but the fact is she was already guaranteed a scholarship...now it is gone. By the way, Typing and general business classes?? Come on...those are just as easy if not easier than band or any other “gimme†classes. haha [/ QUOTE ] Well maybe the larger class will get here MORE scholarships. Instead of being 1/20 or however much it is, she could be 1/120, or 5/120.
  2. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] they will not be validictorians, saluatorians or starters on sports team they will only be know as "those kids from pocahontas". [/ QUOTE ] If they are in the position grade wise to be valedictorian, salutatorian, or starters on the respective sports team then I am certain they will get a shot. It will be a big step from what they are used to, but they can excel if they put for the required effort. By saying that they will only be known as "those kids from Pocahontas" is not sufficient because Graham, Tazewell, Bluefield, where ever the kids decide to go, they will be accepted. Schools in the more "urban" settings of SWVA are used to getting new students just about every week or so. If the Pocy kids put for the effort of getting involved and adapting to their new environment then they will have an enjoyable experience at their new "home". [/ QUOTE ] Actually, I know the girl that is in line to be the Validictorian next year at Pocahontas. However, when she goes to Graham there will be students with higher GPAS. Not because they have made better grades, because this girl has never made below an A. But because the students at Graham have had more AP and other "weighted" classes to choose from, so their GPA's will be higher. She is in line for a huge scholarship at Pocahontas, but she isn't when she changes schools. [/ QUOTE ] If shes taken one AP class then she can still be valedictorian. If it is still like it was a couple years ago, only 8 AP classes can be counted towards your GPA. So since you can take 7 classes a year, she should be ok, assuming she has taken all the lower level classes such as AP Prep English, 3 years of a foreign language, and Pre-Calculus. [/ QUOTE ] So she should take 7 AP classes in one year?!?! I doubt she could fit that many AP classes into her schedule...and do you realize how rediculously hard it would be to take that many AP classes? [/ QUOTE ] She's probably already taken more than one. And if she has never gotten below an A, she seems intelligent enough to at least attempt the 7 AP's.

  4. [ QUOTE ] Whatcha wanna bet that if Vick gets a chance to play after his jail term, it will be with the Cowboys. Jerry Jones loves the thugs and headcases to play football for him. "Sure you can come play football for me!! How many millions you want?!?" Incredible to me that people pay money to go watch his teams play. [/ QUOTE ] I think you're looking at it the wrong way. In my eyes, he gives players a second chance. Take Tank Johnson for example. He was suspended for half of a season because he had an obsession with guns. He was black balled by most of the league. Jerry Jones took a chance on him and so far so good. TO wasn't the only player who didn't like Parcells, but he is very vocal about it. Wade Phillips does care about team ball. TO doesn't get upset anymore if other players, such as Patrick Crayton and Jason Witten, have good days. He understands that his day will come. Jerry Jones usually addresses the needs of his football team. He doesn't pick out "thugs." The Cowboys needed a secondary player who could return kicks. Pacman was the perfect solution. Even though he has character issues, Jerry Jones is confident that the Dallas organization can help Pacman. If his character issues continue, I don't think you'll see him in a Dallas uniform very long, that is if he gets reinstated at all. And as long as Tony Romo is the QB for the cowboys, there is no way Mike Vick sniffs Dallas. Unless he's willing to be a DB or KR or something. Sign him up.
  5. More good news: Chipper Jones left today's game after apparently re-aggravating his quad injury.
  6. [ QUOTE ] We used to play our games at Graham Middle School inside the track on that horrible field!!! Please tell me you do not use it anymore for practice or anything!!! [/ QUOTE ] Graham practiced on that field until 2002. The principal kicked the teams off the premises because there was supposedly some damage done to the inside of the school when indoor practice was held.
  7. [ QUOTE ] I think the team needs to look at a new training program or something. We can not keep healthy pitchers!! Whats the deal? [/ QUOTE ] I think you might be on to something. Right now, Hampton, Glavine, Soriano, Moylan, and Gonzalez are all on the DL. James and Smoltz have already been on the DL this year. After yesterday's start, Bennett had a sore wrist. James left today's game with tightness in his left forearm. Hudson's last start was a nightmare and he lost about 10 mph of velocity. Something weird is going on and I don't like it.
  8. [ QUOTE ] So, you can be silly and call me gay and I can't trash your team? At least I stuck with the topic somewhat by saying at least we had someone that was a descent person. If you think my logic is off at times.....think about that. You just made yourself look like an idiot. [/ QUOTE ] Most people learn form their mistakes. You aren't most people.
  9. [ QUOTE ] Someone give me your thoughts on the Chris Resop move to left field last night (April, 3). I think Bobby Cox has about lost his mind. I'm still trying to figure out if it was tactically necessary or not. [/ QUOTE ] I thought it was absolutely brilliant. Bobby brought in Ring to face Laroche and he struck him out easily. Bobby loves to go by match ups and it worked out there. How many times do you remember Adam Laroche hitting a ball to left field in all the time he played in Atlanta? He kept Resop in the game because he didn't want Royce Ring facing Nady and Peter Moylan was given the night off. So he brought Resop back to face Nady and he got a groundball, but it was up the middle.
  10. At first I was pissed at Hampton, but now i feel bad for the guy. He brought tons of friends and family to the game and didn't want to disappoint them. Supposedly he knew he was injured for a few days, but thought he could pitch through it. Also, the weather may have played a factor. I was reading a message board and some people seem to think that he wasn't hurt bad enough to go the DL, but it was a strategic move by the Braves to bring up someone else to pitch in the bullpen since the bullpen has been used so much the first four games. I don't know about all that. I just hope that Hampton will be able to pitch when his 15 days are up. Every year Hampton pitched in the regular season, the Braves won the division! haha! That being said, this upcoming series is going to be awesome against the Mets, with Hudson, Glavine, and Smoltz pitching, with the climax being Smoltz Vs. Santana on Sunday!
  11. I just want to commend the Tazewell County School Board. They are often scrutinized and have probably been in disfavor with the majority of tazewell county residents at one time, but they made a tough and right decision. I just hope the Pocahontas residents, especially the kids and parents, can eventually realize the right decision was made and it was made mainly for the kids. They have the right to be mad now, but hopefully in time they can respect the school board's decision.
  12. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I thought it wasn't illegal if the website isn't based in the US? [/ QUOTE ] US Federal Government: "Do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do you? Go ahead, make my day..." http://www.gambling-law-us.com/Federal-Laws/internet-gambling-ban.htm [/ QUOTE ] Ok... "Mere participation in online betting or wagering is not banned or criminalized by the Act." The way i see it, if a website isn't based in the United States, it isn't under US jurisdiction. So if you participate in a website that is based anywhere except the US, it seems legal... am i right or wrong?
  13. I thought it wasn't illegal if the website isn't based in the US?
  14. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Glad Tech lost. Now Deron can focus on the dunk contest! [/ QUOTE ] That is the strangest comment I have ever seen. [/ QUOTE ] The NIT doesn't matter. Its for 66th place. If VT would have made it to the semis, Deron probably would not have competed in the College dunk contest. Thus, HOORAY!
  15. Glad Tech lost. Now Deron can focus on the dunk contest!
  16. As far as I'm concerned this is a good thing. Ore had spurts where he looked great last year. He had other spurts where it didn't look like he was trying. I was hoping it was due to an injury, but it seems more like it was effort. I think this will be better for Tech in the long run and a chance to give some other backs more carries.
  17. [ QUOTE ] As much as it burns me to say it, this is probably how it's going to shake out. Are they only going to let 3 ACC teams in though? That sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. [/ QUOTE ] No, 4. UNC, Duke, Clemson, Miami. VT never had a great shot at making the tourney after losing to Old Dominion, Richmond, Western Michigan, Butler, and Gonzaga in the beginning of the year. Then they didn't help themselves losing in the last seconds to WF, Clemson, and UNC. But lets see what the selection committee has to say...
  18. I'm guessing you mean Jeff Allen and yes he is and will be. I was impressed by the turnout at the coliseum tonight. With everybody out for spring break, i figured it would be pretty empty, but it was surprisingly full. I noticed several people from around here at the game. VT wins their next game, they are in.
  19. I'm glad he retired. Not because I don't like him, I do, but because he went out at the top of his game. Too many players stick around too long and their reputation is tarnished a little bit. Not Favre. He was still at the top of his game and he had his second or third best season last year. I want to see him play for years to come, but I don't want to see him struggle. He was one of the most entertaining players to watch. Now he can hand the gunslinger title over to TONY ROMO!
  20. It takes YEARS to build a soccer program. And the other teams have been established for YEARS. The kids have been playing for 7 or 8 years before they play high school soccer. We aren't trying to be mean, but you shouldn't have high expectations. Ask Richlands, they struggled for years, but now are starting to compete. If you sweep Graham, Graham should quit playing and start over.
