  2. what four "things/faces" to rep. your favorite college: 1> The VT emblem......(what did ppl worldwide see on 4/16/07 and the days that followed ......courage, unity and a survival spirit of a beautiful campus that conquered evil) 2> Frank Beamer ......(what name first comes to mind when you mention VT).....he may not be a high profile Saban or Meyer...but what he has done for the image of VT nationally is immeasurable. 3> Thursday night football.....( someone needs to figure out how to carve that on Mt.RM..... what generates more excitement throughout the nation for the VT faithful and the average TV football fan....than Lane on a Thursday). 4> The state of VA emblem.....(the governor, the legislature, the "other" colleges, (UVA) for supporting VT entry into the ACC. Sorry, BE fans no disrespect to you but it brought more recognition to a growing program.)
  3. excerpt from Cafferty article: "When Reid first announced the compromise had been reached, Nancy Pelosi was nowhere to be seen. And it would take an act of God for this egotistical, arrogant woman to miss a photo op where she could take credit for anything. But she wasn't there." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Princess P"....not making a photo op.....oh,my!!!! Heard this same discussion on MSNBC today on "morning joe"....in so many words, the "porkulus" that Congress agreed to.....is not "boding well" for the President. They were saying..... it's not Obama but the Senate that is "looking bad". My reply to that ......Bush was blamed for "everything" and NO blame was directly laid at the feet of the Democratically controlled senate for the last 2 years. The Senate is even more "fatted" up since the election w/the Dems but all of a sudden the "mainstream" media is now gonna put blame at their feet because.......well, I guess ppl can fill in the blanks.
  4. This is a very long read.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29198366
  5. Didn't post a new thread as this article is about "guns" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Following is excerpt from link: http://www.tricities.com/tri/news/local/article/tennessee_newspaper_publishes_concealed_carry_permit_holder_list/20389/ "The National Rifle Association is up in arms over a Memphis-based newspaper’s decision to publish a list of all handgun carry permit holders in Tennessee. Legally, The Commercial Appeal can publish the data due to the state’s public records laws. However, state legislators are now discussing legislation that would make handgun carry permit information confidential. The legislation would also make publishing the information illegal."

  7. I just ran across this and thought some might want to read about their new change in policy . Following is excerpt from link: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,494064,00.html "The Consumerist blog noticed Sunday that the social-networking giant had quietly made a change to its user Terms of Service (TOS) on Feb. 4. Facebook now declares that it has a perpetual license to use anything you post to your own Facebook page — even if you terminate your account."
  8. I've decided to start this thread for all the "breaking" news on Kiff. This guy is virtually an everyday newsmaker and is bringing alot of publicity (good/bad....your call) and excitement to the UT program. Excerpt from link: http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/feb/12/kiffin-has-not-fired-anybody/ "After returning to Knoxville following the birth of his son last month, Kiffin had arranged for someone to pick him up at the airport, according to the article. His driver was 25 minutes late. "I came back and within five minutes I'd fired the guy who was in charge of the guy who'd been sent to pick me up," Kiffin said in the story. "Here's the point: We need to win. That's 25 minutes that Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had that I lost because somebody was late picking me up at the airport." Tiffany Carpenter, UT's director of public relations, said Kiffin had a change of heart about the firing."
  9. Okay, my last post on "this" thread.....my point .........a rumor was "thrown" out about another coach from another school (now since the rumor wasn't specific....ppl could "read" into it whatever). Again, the word you used was rumor in your post. The golden rule.....it works everytime. Have a good day.
  10. opinion: a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. rumor: current story passing from one person to another, without any known authority for its truth; Another rumor about another coach...... without any known authority for its truth
  11. Just read the bold above.......rumor.... key word.......and then the part of your last sentence. The golden rule should apply to anyone and all posting rumors. This thread has become like a poorly written soap opera.
  12. http://blogs.ajc.com/georgia-football-recruiting/2009/02/13/lane-kiffin-may-get-the-last-laugh/ College Football Recruiting Lane Kiffin may get the last laugh 11:10 pm February 13, 2009, by mcarvell We all know the Hollywood saying “Any publicity is good publicity.†Could this apply to Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin? Is this his “secret†recruiting strategy? In the end, will Kiffin get the last laugh on his detractors? It sounds ridiculous, until you look at everything strictly from the standpoint of recruiting. Brief recap: Kiffin has appeared to set a Guiness world record for “ticking off the most SEC coaches in the shortest span.†Barely two months on the job at Rocky Top, Kiffin has taken shots at Florida, Alabama and Georgia. He made the biggest news with “cheating accusations†toward Florida’s Urban Meyer, coach of the reigning BCS champions. One could say (and many are outside of the Orange Nation) that “never before has a coach been this brash, this bold, this quickly … without coaching his first college game.†And that was the PG-13 version of summing up public opinion. Kiffin’s moves appear to be reckless and out of control. However, from a recruiting standpoint, Kiffin’s comments appear to be calculated and (yikes) brilliant. Think about it for a moment. Where does Tennessee get most of its football recruits? It’s not the state of Tennessee, and never has been. The Volunteers traditionally recruit very well in surrounding states, including Georgia and … yes, you guessed it … Florida, which is arguably the nation’s most fertile ground for college prospects. Maybe there was a reason why Kiffin saved his best shot for Urban Meyer. From a recruiting perspective, what Kiffin has done with his Q rating in two months is nothing short of spectacular. He’s got “rock star†status. Kids may love him or hate him, but just about all know who he is. And that’s quite an accomplishment for a newbie in a conference full of coaching legends. To fully understand the point, you have to look at everything as if you are one of the nation’s top juniors, or 2010 prospects. These are kids who were born 10 years after Bear Bryant died, and probably don’t know that Steve Spurrier coached at Florida, and are almost certainly unaware he won the Heisman Trophy there. Yet they can quote Kiffin from last week’s soundbites on ESPN. To test our Lane Kiffin-is-smarter-than-you-may-think theory, we randomly called one of the nation’s top juniors, or 2010 prospects. Tailback Mack Brown of Atlanta’s M.L. King High has around 15 early scholarship offers, including Florida, Alabama, UGA, Auburn, Clemson, and Tennessee. He is a candidate to be the state’s No. 1 recruit for next year. Brown was asked if he knew the name of Tennessee’s first-year coach? “Lane Kiffin, and I talked to him Wednesday,†Brown said without hesitating. How about Clemson’s new coach? “They offered me yesterday [Thursday.]†Brown paused. “No sir. I talked to the running backs coach. I’m not sure about the head coach. Sorry.†What about Auburn? They have a new guy, too. Brown momentarily paused and said, “That’s Coach Chizik, yes, Chizik. Is that right?†Correct. Brown was asked if he knew Chizik’s first name like he did with Kiffin. “No sir. But I can call my coach and find out.†Regarding recruiting, Lane Kiffin may get the last laugh on everyone.
  13. Oh, HL1 you're not very observant.....the spelling is "tru" and before you say it's not spelled correctly, may I remind you that personal choice or pronouncation of one's name is considered correct by most experts. Thank you for asking about how Tazewell County is doing.....what nice manners you have. Have you ever heard the story of "wolf in sheep's clothing?" I bet that was your favorite story in high school and begged your English teacher to read it to you. So, I'm gathering you're inferring that if one did not vote for Obama, that one is uneducated....that is "childish" reasoning....but that's what great about this country....we all get to vote for whomever we choose. Just FYI HL1, I now live in the ATL area (for several years) and have met many ppl and been exposed to different cultures....but gosh dang it.....nothing compares to being a native of Tazewell County. If you were not born there, you've surely missed something in life.....sorry about that "disability" .......but, if you really want to "turn over a new leaf", I'm sure many of the SWVA "folks" would be forgiving.
  14. Dear HL1, Being a proud Tazewell County born native, I'm not sure I could articulate correctly the schedule for your highly intelligent comprehension. Therefore, to save myself from undue scrutiny by you, I will kindly refrain. Good luck in your endeavor. BR, TC/SWVA native
  15. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/shared-blogs/ajc/sportstalk/entries/2009/02/12/report_selig_considering_reins.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab Report: Selig considering reinstating Hank Aaron as home run king By ajc.com | Thursday, February 12, 2009, 06:29 PM The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Could Hank Aaron regain his throne as Major League Baseball’s all-time home run king? USA Today reported Thursday that Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is considering adjusting the record book and reinstating Aaron as baseball’s all-time home run leader. “Once you start tinkering, you can create more problems,†Selig said, USA Today reported. “But I’m not dismissing it. I’m concerned. I’d like to get some more evidence.†Barry Bonds broke Aaron’s record of 755 home runs in 2007. But Bonds is scheduled to stand trial March 2 on charges that he lied to a federal grand jury about knowingly taking performance-enhancing drugs. According to MLB.com, Selig has the authority to adjust the record book under the Commissioner’s all-encompassing “best interest in baseball†powers. Former commissioner Ford Frick enacted the rule in 1961 and added an asterisk to Roger Maris’ single-season home run record of 61. Frick did so because Maris set the mark in a 162-game schedule. Babe Ruth’s mark of 60 home runs was done during a 154-game slate.
  16. Agreeing w/ FG on this about Favre being one of the most admirable players ever. I was in Green Bay in late Sept. and they still had a life size pic of him in their stadium store. Money.....did you hit the wrong keys?????
  17. Wow!!! That must have been some game.
  18. Just heard on Fox News Gregg has decided to not take the Sec. of Commerce job.
  19. I must confess I've never heard of this but anything that deals with nature has to be rewarding. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/gwinnett/stories/2009/02/08/orienteer_survivor_students.html http://projects.ajc.com/gallery/view/metro/orienteering-students/
  20. Just a few "minor" things missing......not much different than many stories from the "mainstream" media this past year. A missing truth here, a missing truth there.....but hey,it does make for a more interesting storyline.
  21. Following is an excerpt from article: "Anything that threatens the integrity of the Census has profound implications. Not only is it the basis for congressional redistricting, it provides the raw data by which government spending is allocated on everything from roads to schools. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also uses the Census to prepare the economic data that so much of business relies upon. "If the original numbers aren't as hard as possible, the uses they're put to get fuzzier and fuzzier," says Bruce Chapman, who was director of the Census in the 1980s." http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123423384887066377.html
  22. You're not being very "subtle"......
  23. We all know women have long memories.Your girlfriend will remind you many times in the future Observer of things you've long forgotten. ha-ha I'm sure Summitt preferred her son to be born in TN since she was a native Tennessean. I know for sure there's no love lost between the UConn coach and Summitt. In fact, they do not play in the regular season now b/c of "perceived" wrongs in UConn's recruiting of Maya Moore, the #1 recruit (Collins Hill HS in Gwinnett Co.) in the nation at that time.
  24. Agreed......but the poster says it came from the school system and if it did there should be accountability.....that's why I posted as I did.
  25. What do you think......????? Is he within his rights......or should "pc" prevail?????? http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/feb/09/16-illegals-sue-arizona-rancher/
