  1. Pretty good show this morning (Saturday the 25th) at CCHS with Pulaski, Galax, Bassett, and Carroll. At this point, everybody should look good running around in shorts with minimal contact. For June, most everybody displayed some good, some bad, and some ugly. Most ugliness comes from the token effort to cover, but it is difficult to do much more than work on technique with the lack of pressure or bodies getting in the way. I think WAY too much is made of these drills as it relates to predicting success for the upcoming season. I do think the drills have invaluable learning experiences and are fun to watch for those of us who are deprived of football!
  2. Mason King-PK at E&H class of 2010 Len Conner-Ferrum and Wake Forest Kim Gillespie-Ferrum and Richmond I also seem to remember Mike Montgomery playing DB somewhere before spending a summer in MLB rookie ball?
  3. I am going to preface my remarks by saying that I offer the following for the fan of football who truly wants an honest opinion based on first hand information I got going through "the recruiting process" with my son, Hunter, over the past year. Feel free to PM me some comments or questions, but please no TOOLS trying to rebut this message. It's just our experience, which will most likely vary from player to player. Here goes nothing: The feedback I got concerning D-1 offers from most recruiters (UNC, UVA, Wake, MD, NC State, Duke, Marshall, and most all Ivy League schools) ranged from the following: No proven players from CCHS upon which to base or compare talent or work ethic-no track record so to speak; poor area of competition-dominant players don't meet other dominant players on the field often; no spring ball; lack of legacy players; no exposure; you name it. VT was different because Coach Hite has a personal relationship with Coach Hale and got involved based on that relationship. The areas that keep coming up are Miami, other areas of FL, and TX. It was so bad I asked a coach at Wake Forest if I got a Miami post office box if that would change things and he grinned big before mentioning that they do have spring football and lots of fast guys. The bottom-line for most D-1 recruits is they are recruited on potential-not performance. Yes, that does contradict most of the reasons/excuses given for not looking at kids in this area! A ton of kids are overlooked because they lack size and the commitment they are asked to live up to is beyond the understanding of most novice on a messageboard. Before you pound your chest and bark back something about being a former player, my experiences at Marshall 30 years ago were comparable to what kids in HS are asked to do now in terms of weight lifting training, practices, etc. (this is the part where you can insert some comment or idea about that being why Marshall wasn't good, but you'd be wrong). Don't confuse desire for a love of the game that must be the number one priority in order to play. I also want to acknowledge the number one source of recruiting exposure in our case was Doug Marrs. I know he's taken heat on this forum and I am not posting this to defend him in any way. Rather, offer a different look at a coach who went out of his way to help a young man at another school (spare me the negative stuff about not helping kids at his own school, as I can only speak to my situation). While UNC was looking at his son, they noticed Hunter from our game with Graham. Coach Marrs gave a ringing endorsement to them and also offered Hunter's name to UVA, TN, and Marshall as somebody they may want to take a look at. We shared several conversations about the process and camps etc. We also got assistance from a coach at Grundy HS (who is on this very forum-thanks again buddy). These guys were PURE CLASS in our situation. The coaches at CCHS were also beyond supportive in terms of getting together DVD's and visiting schools and camps with us. In the end, Hunter was injured in the first quarter of our benefit game with Galax and dropped like a hot date with STD's. We did hear from Marshall and Army, but he'll be attending Radford as a "normal" student, albeit a big normal student. Surgery to repair the last of the damage to his knee is scheduled for April 20th. Your prayers and support are appreciated. This is not a tragedy by any means; it's our Lord leading us in a different direction-one that doesn't include football, but one with great memories of glory days.
  4. Robert Anderson had a great write-up on the East Mont/Riverheads game in today's paper. He is predicting that Riverheads will win 35-27. This was the only game summary or prediction he gave. I'll go out on a limb (about two inches out on that limb) to predict that Richlands brings home the marbles this afternoon. Good luck to them and safe travel for all involved. Praise God that the truly nasty weather isn't coming in until tomorrow and early next week!
  5. Indeed the Final is scheduled for December 11th. The expanded playoff schedule tricked me. BTW, none of the lower seeds survived, but issues surrounding the expansion still need to be evaluated-especially when there really aren't enough quality teams in a region to allow 6 of them in?
  6. Thanks for "salem football" for posting the link on Cole, as I enjoyed reading that article in today's paper. I thought I would share their writer's, Robert Anderson's, predictions and scores: Brookville 21 Liberty 13 (the winner awaits Richlands for the marbles and this one should be a great game). Christiansburg 35 Magna Vista 20 (wow, again I'm glad I don't make a living predicting the outcomes or scores of high school football. I think MV will score more than 20 points and keep it close). Richlands 38 Cave Spring 28 (I don't see this one being that close, but we all know it's that time of year that the margin of victory narrows). Radford 25 Chillhowie 13 (Sounds about right). Eastern Montgomery 33 Galax 14 (Boy, did the Galax coaching staff and their kids have a wonderful year. Congratulations on getting this far, but I just think they're running into a buzz-saw with EM). Here's to wishing all "area" teams good fortune and hoping they're all alive for next week's discussions and picks...
  7. Yes, I wasn't trying to contradict your information, just clarify the recruiting process. I didn't know the difference until I got personally involved with my son! He is "committed verbally" and that's as far as he or the school can go at this point. He can change his mind and commit to another school without any penalty up until the signing period in February, which is the earliest a recruit can "formally commit." A school can also pull their offer, but that seldom happens, especially at a school such as Liberty. Make sense? Just an FYI: His teammate, Mike Cole, as given a verbal to VT.
  8. @thundercloud... Not to be a prick, but signing day isn't until February. He gave a verbal to Liberty over the summer (same time my son was there for a recruiting visit), but that is "non binding," meaning any school is free to contact him during the appropriate contact periods. He had more offers than Liberty, but it's not appropriate for me to discuss his situation any further.
  9. I haven't seen Cave Spring play this year, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express: They have an excellent coach, a very good football program, nice facilities, and very good talent. Sound familiar? It should because I will say the same for Richlands. Richlands prepared for more passing, but got a steady dose of running from the QB in last year's match-up. They are two similar, but different teams and the game is at Richlands? I don't see anybody matching up well with Richlands in all three phases of the game, and it will take a herculean effort (maybe a sprinkle of good fortune) to beat them. None of us to have worthy about any match-ups, as we can all sit back and enjoy the games. Here's to Richlands winning this game and each remaining game...
  10. Christiansburg 56 CCHS Zippo Final...
  11. C'burg 42 CCHS Zippo 8:37 to go in the 3rd. Back to the DVR-great Mentalist episode from this past week...
  12. Christiansburg 21 CCHS 0 11:06 left in the 2nd. This games sounds like the Monday night laugher this past week. I think I shall watch some of the shows I have on DVR and check in with this mess later!
  13. Christiansburg 14 CCHS 0 3:49 left in the 1st. C'burg has run a total of 6 plays to score their 14 points!
  14. Christiansburg 7 CCHS 0 7:00 left in the 1st...
  15. duece: I am certainly pulling for Galax, but history is on the side of Bath County and that is a TOUGH place to play. Dixon has done a GREAT job with the Maroon Tide and deserves coach of the year in the MED (IMHO). Nobody should be surprised if Galax wins that game. Gizmo: I am in TOTAL agreement with you on living in SW Virginia. The Roanoke media seems to neglect its readers/viewer is SW VA, but they always have. I tried to get the BHC years ago, but Wytheville is as far up as they come in our area, so I'm stuck with The Roanoke Times!
  16. Not much love from the Roanoke Times for the SWD and not much different from Lance's post which referenced the BHC predictions. The scores are also within a TD or so of each other, but I think predicting scores is like _____ in the wind! The Bristol paper left out some other "area" games so here's what Robert Anderson's other pics were: Galax 27 Bath Co. 21 (boy, I don't see that happening-especially given that the game is @Bath); Salem 20 Magna Vista 14 (I also don't see that one happening, but then again I don't make a living covering high school football); Eastern Montgomery 45 Covington 25 (finally, I agree); Liberty 34 Alleghany 19 (Liberty or Northside is probably going to play Richlands for the marbles?); Northside 24 Brookville 20 (may be the best match-up around-period?) Good luck to Grundy and Carroll County as both face a very steep slope in keeping alive their successful and rewarding seasons. It's easy to take Richlands and I would guess that Martinsville's only chance is in showing up, but I'm sure they don't view the outcome the same way I do.
  17. Gman: Wow, xy is concurrent to yx, but e) was not a choice! I wasn't suggesting that the travel impacted the outcome and I am happy Grundy won. Again, kudos to their staff for throwing the ball in those situations. Does anybody know how long it took Tunstall to get there? No Mapquest answers please because those of us who have traveled by school bus know those times are not applicable.
  18. Yeah, but you didn't answer the math question?
  19. That is a statistical anomaly for sure, but I am more intrigued by the play calling. Kudos to Grundy for putting the ball in the air in those situations! It would be have easy to take excellent field position like that and run the ball and play conservatively, especially given that the young men involved were not throwing many (if any) balls until the unfortunate injury to the starter, Kelly, several weeks ago. I LOVE the play calls! I am sure that Tunstall may have some other statistical anomaly in the amount of travel time to/from Grundy? Probably would read like those old math questions on standardized test? You know, these: A bus leaves point A and travels 6 hours to point B. Plays a 48 minute game and stops to eat, lick their wounds, and search for cellphone coverage for 1 hour before traveling back from point B to point A. How long did it take them? A) All day, all night, and part of the next day. B) Who knows and who cares? C) Not enough information to know. D) B and C...
  20. Uli is kicking PAT's and also hit a short FG in the Bassett game. The injury is to his "plant leg" and that creates problems trying to drive KO's. I talked to him right before the Graham game and his knee was still bothering him. He's a tough kid who wants to play and we can all understand that feeling. Let's just hope there is no carry over with this injury to his upcoming soccer season.
  21. Not to contradict Wooly's response, but: Carroll County's placekicker damaged his knee in the Grayson game and only returned for the Richland's game (had an open date and three games in-between). He hasn't kicked off since the Grayson game and was putting some of the balls back around the goal line before his injury. His back up missed several games with knee surgery and only returned a couple of games ago. The situation with placekickers has as much to do with the short kicks as any other factor. Special teams has been very good and these kids covered kicks well with their #1 kicker. Since his injury, kickoffs have suffered. I would expect more of the same with Christiansburg, but we only kicked off once in our first meeting, so it may be a moot issue now! As for it being "cheap," I guess hitting a 3-wood or iron off the tee to put the ball in play as opposed to a driver in the weeds is also cheap? Dinks over the net in tennis are also cheap? Sheesh, it's called the best strategy given the situation and typing without knowing the situation is cheap at best!
  22. Here's the link demon '73 http://www.goldenwestmedia.com/
  23. CCHS 22 Bassett 7 5:32 left in the half.
  24. CCHS 15 Bassett 7 7:02 Left in the half... Bassett recovered another on-side kick and scored off a short field.
