I agree on Marcell.  He's got to keep quiet and play ball.  To much extracurricular stuff after the play.  No question though, he isn't playing QB at the college level.  He has defensive back written all over him.  He's actually 6"2, 6"3 and runs a 4.5.  He's thin now, but when he grows into that frame with a touch more weight, he's going to be special in my opinion at the next level.  You might be right about George Wythe and maybe I'm wrong.  Maybe I have been watching to much football.  I have no idea.  I thought we looked pretty good, but I'm a homer so who knows.  Gate City will tell us more.  It's hard for me to gauge who is good anymore.  For example, I think Richlands looks fantastic from what I've seen so far, as in....their best team since they lost to Appomattox in a game they should have won many years ago.  I take it many Richlands or SWVA fans probably don't see it, so this causes me not to trust myself anymore.  Now...if Richlands beats Union or plays Union in a nailbiter, I will be on to something.

I am sure Marcell is very fast. But, very, very few High School players run a TRUE 4.5. Numbers like 4.3, 4.4, 4.5 are thrown around all the time, it's just not the case! Track and field organizations generally use a +.15 correction factor, when comparing old hand timed races to electronically times modern races. Plus, they where hand timed with multiple watches with very experienced timers. Lows and highs thrown out, the rest must generally agree Not a single High School coach saying....... GO. Hand times can easily be .2 to .3 off. The shorter the race the more pronounce this is. Only times that are electronically timed are accurate. If someone wants to time their own team, using the same timer, under the same conditions... then he could get a really good idea of how fast his team is relative to each other. But, the time itself is absolutely meaningless for comparison purposes. Even when comparing to another team that is also hand timing. A guy that runs a TRUE 4.6 is very, very fast and is the fastest guy; by far, in 95% plus of high school games.  A true 4.5 would be about 6th on the following list........

Last NFL combine RB top 40 times. (Fastest college running backs in Draft class)
    1. Justice Hill, @CowboyFB, 4.40 2. Ryquell Armstead, @Temple_FB, 4.45 t3. Jordan Scarlett, @GatorsFB, 4.47 t3. Mike Weber, @OhioStateFB, 4.47 5. Travis Homer, @CanesFootball, 4.48
  2.  Quinton Morton-Robertson was 1a player of the year his sophomore year. Moved to 2a for junior year, Mac Mcclung got the honor, but was still Roanoke Times player of the year (approx. 70 teams including 3a, 4a, 5a and 6a), He is now a senior and cant make the top 20 of some of the replies to this topic. I could have sworn the board host has said in the past that Radford is included in this forum. Although not on the logo graphics. If this is the case, then the only question is who is 1 and who is 1A between QMR and Ervin.

Why would I compare WV teams to 5A or 6A VA schools when WV only has 3 classes?

Also, I never said they would beat VA schools, I said the final 4 in WV could play with the final 4 in VA. A, AA, & AAA.

Virginia used to only have three classes A , AA , AAA. Now that they have six classes, doesn't mean that 5a and 6a are now bigger; the "pie" is just broken up into 6 pieces not three. So, basically 1A, 2A ( old A), 3A, 4A (old AA), 5A, 6A (old AAA). The sizes of the schools are the same. I don't know where the enrollment breakoff for AAA is in West Virginia ( less urban areas),but AAA in West Virginia is more than likely closer in size to a 5A 6A in Virginia, not a 3A.

Gate City has failed to score 70 only 3 times in 29 games and you're suggesting "high 50's".  Wow!  Lofty goals, I like that!

I know I will be here even if Radford wins.  Will you have to onions to come back if they don't?

Radford has only given up 60  three times. They will slow the tempo down, GC will have fewer possesions. Gate City is very good and will still score alone more than the 43 points a game that radford gives up. I would put the over under around 58, 59. like I said a very good close game.

Oh, yeah I will be here. You will have some explaining to do. Can't wait.

You don't know what you don't know!  You're still stuck on size.  A 6'-0" guard with a 6'-0" wingspan trying to defend a 6'-3" guard with a 6'-7" wingspan is a mismatch.  Radford struggled the three times I saw them attempt to match up to that very scenario.

Gate City has three of those players!

I will take Radford defence "guards included" against any other team region 2D or 2C. Except, Graham , they are better than all others on D Gate City will be doing good to score  in the high 50's.

Carroll was a 3 win team in a relatively weak district that played a ridiculously weak schedule.  They lead Radford twice for 3 quarters.  I get the whole "woulda, coulda, shoulda" argument but the point remains (and seemingly skipped right over your head) Radford struggled mightily, twice, against a 3 win team because they couldn't control the length of Adam Horton.

Length and size are two distinctly different things on a basketball court!

Yes, the contention that 6' 6" is not as long as 6'3" does go over my head. Radford struggled without their center ( against a bad team) they were flat, and won by 9 anyway. the second game they won by 17 ( in your world "struggled mightily") with limited center play. I guess they do struggle with length ( without their starting center).A lot of teams would like to call a 17 point win, a "struggle". But he's 95 percent healthy now. Your struggle with length argument is horse****.

Correction : Horton is listed from 6'3" to 6'6", Jones 6'6" to 6'7".Point is: he makes a big difference against size or "length".

  7. But they didn't loose to a 24-4, Grayson county... They won by 9. The games last 4 quarters. Yes they could have lost (not should've), but the didn't. You can find games like that on any schedule. Good teams find a way to win.

Thea were without Milas Jones (6'6"center), the first game against Carroll County. Won by 9. Could've not should've.

The second game against Carroll County won by 17,Jones in a heavy knee brace, limping.

Gate City-Radford in a place that Gate City has not played particularly well this season.  I think Gate City still wins, but you’d have to give Radford a puncher’s chance, especially how they defend.

Radford has a " punchers chance" . Wow. I think this will be a good game, 2 very good teams. Radford does play good defense,,they go 10 deep and keep rotating players. But, they are very athletic, they can run with anybody. That's just not Cormanys thing. He emphasizes defense, no defense - you sit. Radford doesnt score as many points as Gate City, but they could. Radford chooses to have efficient possessions  and control tempo. With the point gaurd,(Morton-Robertson) they can play as slow or fast as they like. You won't get the ball.

Radford will shows  how athletic they are, when there is a scramble for a loose ball ( Radford generates a lot of loose balls). They win most of those battles score on a fast break, then slow it back down and run a very dicliplined offense.

  9. Looking forward to the Radford Galax game Friday. Radford has a very, very impressive offense, they can score in a variety of ways and score quick. First team vs. First team at George Wythe, was 48 to 7 at halftime. pulled the starters out after one series in the second half. Trying to prevent injuries, because there is a Huge drop-off to the second team. Ended up having to put the starters back in to eat clock, because the backups couldn't even slow the Maroons down. Injuries will be a key for Radford this year. Don't know how good the defense is. Fridays game against Galax will tell the tale. Right now I think the defense is solid, but not great. If all goes well for Radford in the injury department, It will take a lot of points to beat the Bobcats this year. Like 40 plus.

  10. I think Radford would beat GW, they are a better team than people thought they were based on record alone.

I think Honaker is clear all the way to State..I was worried about Radford pulling the upset, past them now and I don't see them losing anytime soon.

Radford did beat GW. Third game of the season 35-14.

  11. I agree, comparisons of a single common opponent, that two teams played, once removed. Is not very substantial. But in this case, what else do you have to go on. I haven't seen Lee play, so I really don't know how good they are. But Giles is the real deal. If Lee wins,(or even keeps it close) they will have made a massive statement. I may be wrong but.......I think Giles wins fairly big.

  12. I think Lee has a great chance at winning this one if they play like they did today! After Glenvar struggled to put away wise central. ...that Giles win over Glenvar no longer looks quite as impressive as i once thought it did. Still from what I've seen and heard Giles is a great team. But.....I'm gonna go for the upset pick:

    Lee - 27

    Giles - 21

But you also have to consider, that Glenvar beat Grayson County 51-0, and Giles smoked Glenvar 33-0,(Frankly, the score was closer than I expected). After watching Radford play both teams, Glenvar is not even close to Giles, in my opinion if they played ten times, this would be one of the best results they could hope for.

I think this team is better than last years State Championship team. They are good on defense, but the offense is off the charts. Juggernaut. The only thing I cant get my head around is the Galax score. I saw Radford play Giles and get steamrolled and Radford did very well against Galax in a scrimmage.

  13. Radford does have good speed. Heath Grant #5, has got better and better as the season has went on. He's about 5'9" 170 but is very, very fast. He is a north - south runner, but he is also shifty. But what is most impressive is how physical a runner he is for his size, he looks to run over people (benches 300 lbs). Marcus Finley(QB) is extremely quick, he is very dangerous if he gets outside the pocket,(knee buckling moves). All the other skill positions are athletic, but are not very big.

Radford was 5-5 during the regular season, but could have been 8 and 2. Was at the Blacksburg (AAA) 10 yard line with a chance to tie, with 10 seconds left and threw a pick six.(Back-up QB, Finley played wide receiver in this game, hurt shoulder). Lost to Ft. Chiswell in Double O.T. (Without Finley), Had an extra point length FG to win the game in regulation against Glenvar and got it blocked, stopped Glenvar in the first OT and missed another extra point length (walk-off) FG to win the game. Lost in the second O.T. Lost to Giles ( dominating team) and played AAAA Pulaski County close for a half before fading in the second half. Radford is alot better than their record

My question is this for the people who know Honaker. Radfords' weakness to me is defending a good, big power running team. Does Honaker have the ability to take over a game between the tackles (I.E. Giles), because if they can, they will keep the Bobcats offense of the field.

One interesting side note to this game is that I heard Honaker has a turf field, if this is true, this is intriguing. I am interesting to see what Radfords' speed/quickness will do on artificial turf.

I am looking forward to seeing this game I think it will be the best second round match up of the 1A west playoffs.

  14. Floyd played Carroll County twice this year. They won 62 - 57 the first time (away) and they thrashed Carroll County at home 58-32. Carroll County won the SWD tournament and if I'm not mistaken they were at least tied for first in the SWD during the regular season. So, i am not following your logic that every SWD team could beat them ? They beat your champion TWICE, by an average margin of 16 points!

I think its more than likely they would have went undefeated, if they were in the SWD. It would have been more difficult than doing it in the Three Rivers, but very possible, if not probable.
