I was there last year at the Gate City/ Richlands playoff game. I remember Richlands fans shaking plastic Coke bottles with beans or nuts in them.

One time back in the 90's Grundy played Salem at Tazewell's stadium in the playoffs and some fans from Grundy brought this huge horn mechanism that was powered by a battery. The guy who was sitting in front of the horn got up sometime during the 3rd quarter and told them to stop blowing that thing! The people who brought the device all stood there and looked at each other not knowing what to say! lol

The SWD had been pretty much a cake walk for Richlands for years until Abingdon started turning things around. Of course last week was a different story.

The thing that got me is WVVA and Time Warner blamed each other for the loss of WCYB in the Tazewell Co. area. WCYB did have a rally in Richlands right after being removed from the local airwaves but then no further support was shown for the area by the station.

I have some contacts in the broadcast industry and they told me a local affiliate can exercise their right to be the sole NBC, CBS, or ABC network in the area. Im guessing stations didn't mind other affiliates in the area until things got so competitive. It's sad really because WCYB has long been the channel we watched for high school sports back in the day. I think WJHL (Johnson City) and WDBJ (Roanoke) have been taken off the air in SWVA as well, haven't they?

Respect for all three teams left. I hope we have all three advancing to state next week. Good luck boys!

I'm pretty sure the train whistle used at the Gate City home games comes from the "Big Blue Cannonball" moniker. I know they used to have an old steam whistle they would take to games and blow it. My college roommate who played for GC told me (I think) that they put the old steam whistle in a park somewhere in town. Can any of the Gate City faithful on here confirm this?

I went to the Richlands vs. Gate City game today and I just want to say GC has some of the classiest fans around. Immediately after the game they were congratulating the Richlands fans and telling them "Good Luck next week" and patting them on the back. I even got well wishes for next week and I was just an interested fan for today's game. I have never seen such a classy display after a loss.

Best of luck to Giles. Y'all need to win so I can come watch you in Salem next weekend!
