  1. I can kinda' see why you apologized.  The kid did not seek or ask for a critique.  Like you said, this isn't college or the NFL.

BUT, do his parents also get upset and call the principal when his English teacher critics his research paper and makes suggestions on how to improve it?  My advice, grow thicker skin and ignore message boards if they are upset by comments posted on them.

  2. Way back in my day the VHS/THS (commonly called "V-T") game always drew a huge crowd.  It was the last game of the season for both teams with a full week of activities leading up to the actual game.  The "snake dance" down State Street was something to see.  Not sure of the attendance numbers but Milton Franklin's senior year was one of the biggest crowds I ever saw, but it was hard to tell how many were there from the field.

Doesn't seem to have the same luster and appeal anymore.

  3. Our looney tune leaders keep stirring the pot for political sake, looking to gain a vote somewhere without ever considering the will of the people.  I am not an isolationist but I believe this...all these countries have a right to choose their own style of government and way of life.  It is not our role to dictate what those choices may be.  When did the U.S. become the world's nanny?

No wonder those countries hate us.  How would we feel if other countries openly and aggressively tried to shape our politics?

I can see a scenario in which history looks back at this Syria situation and points to it as the beginning of a great war.  And btw...all you bone heads who voted for our current leadership, hope you are happy with putting a jayvee player at the head of our country.

  4. The UN has shown its contempt for the US many times recently.  They want us to do all the dirty work while they sit on the sidelines complaining about our way of life!  The US does not have to be the world's police...and should not be.  Time for other countries to man up and take care of their own.  Syria is not a threat to us militarily, but if we get involved in yet another Middle Eastern country it just opens the door for militant groups to jump onto the bandwagon of anti-Americanism.

If we get involved (and I hope we do not), forget this "limited stuff" and hammer the crap out of them!  Leave no doubt about consequences of certain actions and there will be less despots around the world willing to go there...

Speak softly but carry a BIG stick.

  5. I do not think Gate City is as fundamentally sound now as they have historically been.  Their fans are constantly hammering the coach and his staff about it.  They have a great football tradition but I believe they are kind of living off that reputation, not building on it.  Not saying they are bad, just that the last few years the decline is obvious.  Maybe just a down cycle, maybe not.

  6. There we have it!  Exactly what I was looking for.  I could say the same thing about us against Va High.  We were keeping everything in check on defense and then the offense would cough up the ball and hand them a present.  I won't take anything away from them though.  From what I saw they are a good team not a great one but still good.Maybe Abingdon will win, hard to tell.  One thing I did hear while I was down at Va High is that the running back at Abingdon has some real speed and was breaking some things open there.

Also on a side note I have to give a former Abingdon player a nod, Ludwig did a pretty good job on the kickoffs for VT...Just a shame that he (or anyone else) couldn't tackle the return man on that one kickoff!

I don't suppose that the VHS defense had anything to do with the spanking delivered last Friday.  Oh well, better to be lucky than good, as they day.

  7. I forgot about the playoff game last year.  I am sure somebody knows the exact number but I'd bet it is less than 5 (including the playoffs).

I looked up the VHS-JSB matchups on the VHSL Reference site.  Since 1999 (that is as far back as that site seems to keep records, VHS leads 12-3 (twice last year).

But as pointed out, the only one that matters is the next one...

  8. We might be disagreeing elsewhere, Bob, but you're right on with that statement. I think my guys get throttled badly, in the 59-7 range.

I am a UVA man myself...UVA-Wise that is...but it was called Clinch Valley College during my time.  I hope the 'Hoos can keep it respectable but I have my doubts.

  9. My tongue was firmly in my cheek with the NCAA investigating serious matters comment...

There are few things in life you truly own;  your name is one of those.  I would argue that it is inappropriate for an institution or business to profit from using a players/employees name.  The LOI signed does not authorize the use of the players name/likeness by the institution.

I work for a large company.  I have designed several items that have been patented.  The company owns those patents.  They profit from those patents.  I am compensated to create items of value.  If I do not, my position can be terminated.  However, I have not authorized my likeness and name to be used to further promote the patented items for the company.

A college football player "works" for an institution of higher learning.  He is "compensated" with an education to produce a viable work product on the field.  If he does not, his compensation (scholarship) can be withdrawn.  He is not compensated to be a pitch man for the college of which he attends.

So to me it is fairly simple;  if you use a players name or likeness, pay them for it.  They are currently only "paying for the work product".

  10. Thanks for the perspective.  I definitely see where you're coming from now because '80 and '81 were absolutely wretched.  My recollection of 1981 is that you guys were up 42-0 at halftime and probably could've posted any final score you wanted.  My perspective is that Richlands was essentially mediocre over the course of the '70s and '80s with flashes of both competitiveness and absolute misery peppered within.  The weird dynamic that I observed in the '90s (when the program started to win with some level of consistency) was the fact that most long-time Richlands supporters weren't as excited about the experience of success as much as they'd expected that kind of performance all along.

And although the win-loss ledger has certainly been more pleasant to reflect upon in the last 20 years, I will confess that I am nostalgic for the days of the old 10-team SWD.  With rare exceptions, a win in that league against ANY team was worth savoring.

I absolutely loved the old SWD.  Our only non district game back then was against Tenn. High.  Every game meant so much.  I remember going 8-2 and not making the playoffs.  Things certainly have changed.

  11. Then maybe the NCAA should do what the mainstream media won't in important things...

Anyway, the kid is a college player under a serious microscope...I say, if he can make a little money by using his own name, go for it.  The NCAA and Texas A&M sure make a lot of money from his name.  I know he gets an education out of the deal but I would wager the school/NCAA are more than making up for that.

  12. I'm sick of being the police force of the world...bring everyone we have spread all over the globe home, let these idiots fight it out amongst themselves and bring down holy hell on anyone who messes with our homeland.

This country has gone straight to hell over the past 20 years...they need to fix the mess we have at home, stop letting china and everyone else do business here for free, stop wasting OUR money, and stop trying to run the entire world.

The USA needs to get back to the  "carrying a big stick" policy and not be afraid to use it...that does NOT mean going to the middle east to try to run the show...let them do whatever they want with each other and stay out of it until it directly effects us here at home...might be some tough times to get there, but in the end things would be much better I think...and we have no business occupying any other nation for any reason unless they have given us a legit reason to do so...such as an attack on our homeland.

I'm just sick of it all...we have no business in Syria...period....that is just another money pit.

    Amen!

  13. In the 70's and 80's, Richlands was scheduled as the homecoming opponent for most SWD teams.  Their success has been fairly recent. I am glad they have been strong of late though;  it will make the rest of the district better by playing them.

It is pretty cool to read that VHS baseball coach Daniels encouraged his baseball players to play FB.  Maybe VHS can give Richlands a game this year.
