BRISTOL, Va. – The past few seasons, Virginia High basketball has come up short when it faced Sullivan East.

At the beginning of the season Bearcat head coach Doug Mitchell said the Cats had made strides since last year, and that was evident as the Bearcats overcame a 10-point deficit to rally for a fourth quarter win over East 57-55 at Virginia High on Tuesday in non-district play.

"We came in as the underdogs in this game," said Virginia High center Randy White. "We wanted to show everybody we could play this year."

White stayed consistent underneath the basket as he lead all with 20 points.

It was White and C.J. Tillie (17 points) that kept the Bearcats from a near blowout as they just scored nine third quarter points. The Patriots (5-11) found the net often as they outscored VHS (6-2) 22-9 going into the fourth.

Two Cody Shipley buckets to begin the fourth quarter gave the Patriots their biggest lead at 12 points. But White and Tilley took over and took advantage in the fourth quarter, scoring all of the Bearcats’ final baskets.

Six straight points from White in the fourth quarter dwindled the Pats margin to seven. A 3-point field goal from Tillie followed by another White bucket brought the Cats within two, then Tillie tied the game with an offensive rebound at 52.

Down the stretch, East blanked on two one-and-one attempts from the free throw line. In the final 1:06, East blew two chances, with a final botched pass giving the Bearcats the ball with 6.3 seconds left.

"We made a few mistakes down the stretch," said Sullivan East head coach John Dyer. "We got in foul trouble inside. We’re going to have to make our own luck (down the stretch)."

VHS now heads into a week with three games against Highlands District foes and one non-district opponent.

"We saw this as a big game in our schedule," said Virginia High head coach Doug Mitchell. "We hadn’t beaten them the last couple of years. We saw this as a win that could help us get over the hump. Tonight was important in our schedule of games."

Isaac Snapp led East with 16 points and was backed up by Tyler Cross’s 13.

Terrell Vernon added 11 points for Virginia High.

The Bearcats held East to 13 second half points as they blitzed them in non-district action at Virginia High.

Ashley Grimm and Kayla Wells combined for 35 points as the 8-1 Bearcats continued to roll through opponents.

"We had a lot better intensity on defensive in the second half," said Virginia High girls head coach Barry Reed. "It was a good team effort."

In the first half, Reed, one of the most active coaches on the sidelines, sat several starters because of their lack of intensity.

Grimm, one of those forced to sit, came ended up leading the Bearcats with 18 points. Wells was in foul trouble early but brought home 17 points.

I would say the only reason Reed put Hodges in to ref was because maybe he couldn't find anybody else to ref the game. Honaker personel have officiated JV and 8th grade games in both basketball and also in JV and 8th grade volleyball because there was no one else on hand to ref the game. Heck, I remember one time when my sister was playing JV basketball a couple high school kids at Castlewood reffed a JV girls game. If this were a varsity game I don't think Hodges would have been on the officiating crew.
