PREP BASKETBALL: Falcons cruise past Blue Tornado

ABINGDON, Va. – With Monday night’s game between Abingdon and Richlands all but over by halftime, fans were at least able to become energized by the second-half fireworks.

Only these weren’t the fireworks that resulted in cascading sparks across the sky. These were the fireworks that resulted in technical fouls.

Behind a tough-man defense and 21 points from forward Colby Hunt, the Falcons cruised to a 58-36 win over the Southwest District rival at home. Abingdon leaped to an early 16-5 lead after the first quarter, while the defense forced Richlands into 11 first-half turnovers.

“I thought we came out and played well,†Abingdon coach B.J. Lasley said. “We jumped out to a 10-point lead there early in the first quarter and were able to get a cushion and able to spread things out offensively and do some good stuff.â€

Crisp passes around the Blue Tornado’s zone helped free up Hunt on the wing, where he was able to pick apart the Richlands’ defense with 15-foot jump shots accentuated by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer as the first-half clock expired. Hunt finished with 14 points in the first half.

“We did a good job tonight of making that extra pass,†Lasley said. “Not just taking a good shot, but making that extra pass and making it a great shot.â€

By halftime the Falcons were almost ensured of staying perfect in the Southwest District (5-6, 3-0), taking a commanding 21-point lead into the locker room.

The Blue Tornado had a difficult time throughout the game running its offense. Lasley dispatched guard Nathaniel Funk to intercept the ball handler each and every time up the court, putting gum in Richlands’ offensive works.

And while Blue Tornado (3-7, 2-4) coach Jim McGee has seen his team sputter early this season, Monday night served as the low-point for Richlands’ offensive woes.

“We’re struggling right now,†McGee said. “We’re struggling to score, obviously. We’re having more problems with ourselves [than the Abingdon man-to-man defense]. We lost one of our players a couple weeks ago, and we’ve struggled since then. But not like tonight.â€

Hunter McGee led the Blue Tornado with 20 points, but was one of only five Richlands’ players to enter the scorer’s book.

With Richlands trailing by as many as 30 points early in the fourth quarter, play began to become chippy near the end of the game.

The Blue Tornado sent the Falcons to the free throw line 15 times in the final quarter and Abingdon attempted only two shots from the field in the fourth period. Richlands was charged with two technical fouls in the last quarter, running their game total to three.

But physical play was apparent from both teams, something Lasley chalked up to fevered emotions.

“Two teams out there playing hard, every now and then kids get tangled up trying to make a rebound,†Lasley said. “Teams play hard and kids are passionate about the game, they’re going to play with a little emotion, and in my opinion, emotion’s not all bad as long as you keep your head and do it the right way.â€
