Lee High wins 61-50

GROUP A DIVISION 2 GIRLS

 

Chelsea Cluesman scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Lee thwarted a second-half rally by Radford to defeat the Bobcats 61-50 in a quarterfinal game Friday night at Salem Civic Center.

Jalan McPherson had 16 points and freshman Makenzie Cluesman added 12 for Lee (21-6). The Generals play either Honaker or Floyd County in a semifinal at 12:15 p.m. Friday in Richmond at VCU's Siegel Center.

Radford, which had its trip to Salem delayed when the team bus got stuck behind an accident on Interstate 81, was led by sophomore Maryah Sydnor with 13 points and nine rebounds. The Bobcats (23-5) trailed 32-22 at halftime and tied the game at 40 in the fourth quarter but could not take the lead in the second half.

James River (boys) beat Va High, 57-21.

GROUP A DIVISION 2 BOYS

 

Patrick Bennett scored 12 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and James River held Virginia High to 12.7 percent shooting for the game en route to a 57-21 quarterfinal victory at Salem Civic Center.

Sophomore Chris Ware added 10 points for James River (24-4), which qualified for the semifinals for the second time in three years. The Knights will play either Radford or Castlewood at VCU's Siegel Center at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Josh Tignor led Virginia High (19-9) in scoring with eight points. The Bearcats mad just 7 of 55 shots from the field and were 1 of 21 from 3-point range.

Group AA Division 3 boys: Cave Spring advances

Josh Henderson had 16 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocked shots and Mark Overstreet scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half as well as helping defend Brookville standout Logan Thomas as Cave Spring beat Brookville 55-41 in the VHSL Group AA Division 3 quarterfinals Friday at Salem Civic Center.

 

The Knights (24-6)advance to their first state semifinal since the 2002-03 season and will face the winner of today's Liberty-Marion game, at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Siegel Center.

 

Thomas, the Virginia Tech football signee, was limited to six second half points and finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He made three of 17 shots and the Bees were limited to 30.4 percent shooting for the game.

 

Henderson and Overstreet, both juniors, were a combined 13-for-18. Overstreet missed one of seven shots and was the one player for either team who never left the floor.
