GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted October 19, 2012 Coleman Thomas Has Three Major Offers by Chris Horne, SportsWar Recruiting Analyst on Oct 18, 2012 Offensive line prospect Coleman Thomas was offered a scholarship by West Virginia University one day after attending a Mountaineers camp this past summer. In-state ACC schools Virginia and Virginia Tech offered more recently, and the Fort Chiswell (VA) junior believes two others could be on the verge as well. Coleman Thomas “I think Duke and Cincinnati could be close,†said Thomas. Fort Chiswell head coach Stephen James says the list of schools that have either sent recruiting mail to and/or requested film on the 6'5″, 295-pound Thomas is too long to name. The 16-year-old calls the early recruiting attention and success “surreal.†Thomas has hit the recruiting road this fall, attending two West Virginia games, Virginia Tech for its season opener against Georgia Tech, and last weekend's contest in Charlottesville between Maryland and UVa. WVU is a school he knows very well. “Well, West Virginia, my dad has family up there. We've been getting season tickets for the past eight or nine years,†Thomas said. Despite the obvious positive factors in favor of the Mountaineers, Thomas claims to be open at this stage of his recruitment. “Of course, West Virginia was the first to offer, but as of now UVa, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech are all even for me,†said Thomas, who plans to return to Morgantown for WVU's game against Oklahoma and Virginia Tech for its game against Florida State. “All three play in a big environment with huge crowds. The Georgia Tech game at Virginia Tech was great. West Virginia is sold out pretty much every game. Virginia has some of the nicest facilities I've seen anywhere, and the coaches have always been really nice.†A definite trend in college football recruiting these days is for a prospect to commit before the start of his senior season. Asked if he had a timetable for when he would like to make his college choice, Thomas said: “I'd like to have a situation to where I wouldn't have to worry about it heading into my senior year. We'll see how it goes. If I'm not ready, it'll have to carry over into my senior season.†Thomas has enjoyed success on and off the field in the past few months. His team is 6-1 heading into tomorrow night's match-up against a 6-2 Grayson County squad. In his third year as Fort Chiswell varsity's starting center, Thomas has helped pave the way for standout senior running back Daniel Hamm and the rest of the Pioneers offensive attack. Coach James laughingly recalls Thomas serving as the team's ball-boy for many years before suddenly being the starting center as a freshman. Over the past three years, the standout prospect has gotten bigger and stronger while maintaining his athletic ability. “He has got great feet,†James began. “He is a very good athlete because he starts on the basketball team that made it to the finals last year. He's also the first baseman on our baseball team. He hit well over .300 last year with [43] RBIs. He brings a lot of intangibles.†
