Team 0 Report Share Posted October 1, 2019 Three questions 1.) How will the NCAA look at this? 2.) Will it disqualify teams from playing in the NCAA if they take advantage of this bill? 3.) Will other states follow suit and turn the NCAA upside down?
sixcat 2,919 Report Share Posted October 1, 2019 North Carolina, South Carolina and New York all have similar bills before state legislature right now. In my opinion, the NCAA will cease to exist in a few years. At least in the way we have come to know the NCAA. The athletic departments of each university (and as a collective group) hold all the power. The NCAA doesn't have any discernible talent or skill. Without an agreement with the power athletic schools, the NCAA doesn't have anything to sell to the general public. The athletic departments of Alabama, Clemson, Texas, USC, etc. have tons of power with the product they can sell. The NCAA will consist of the "Group of 5" before long. The "Power 5" conferences will operate as a sort of "minor leagues" of professional sports. Team
Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted October 1, 2019 The compromise here is to allow players to benefit off their likenesses for purposes of endorsements, video games, etc. but for the schools to be forbidden from subsidizing that. It’s the only rational way to get around Title IX. It might also eliminate the “bag men”. What’s $100K from a booster when Nike’s paying you $1M? GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted October 1, 2019 NCAA should just ban every player who receives money so they can go start their professional career. Team
sixcat 2,919 Report Share Posted October 1, 2019 The California law doesn't take effect until 2023. A bill introduced in Florida today will take effect in 2020 if passed. Similar bills have been introduced in New York, Illinois and South Carolina. Indiana (Notre Dame) and North Carolina are expected to have similar bills introduced this week. The dominoes have started to fall! Team
