I was not happy at all a Union fan yelled back. Very disappointed in both sides of that, it’s a kid on the field hurt. Shut up and understand it’s bigger than Ws and Ls.

By far the worst I’ve ever saw. They didn’t favor RV or anything, just wholly incompetent. Totally lost, making up calls with no flags, absurd management of clock and down and distance, etc.

I have the same exact read. Union thought it would be easy after going up 6-0 so quick but RV came to play and gave them a helluva fight. Clown show officiating aside, RV has to feel good even in a loss if Honaker isn’t badly injured. They ran the ball well on Union, stopped the run and played extremely well until the Union talent kinda took over after the half. Only RV turnover was the INT which in my mind was wholly on the receiver. No chance O’Quinn makes that massive of a misread. Had to be a wrong route.

It’s of course nice to have six years of two NFL RBs, but he won three titles and played for one more without a Jones on the team. Phil had a big part in the BSG youth program as well and that led to a lot of kids being prepared to play. He was a very good offensive coach and wasn’t afraid to have very good, competent coordinators on defense. Phil was also very ballsy, and would take risks and was always playing to win games, never to not lose. You can’t win state without talent but you can’t win on talent alone. You have to execute and be prepared mentally and physically and Phil always had his team ready to do that.

Then tonight you were in for a show lol. That was the single most incompetently officiated game I’ve ever saw. They weren’t favoring any team I don’t believe, they were just flat out overmatched. Let the game get too chippy, mangled the clock on numerous occasions, false starts after the play was over, just a clown show. RV impressed hell out of me. I hope Honaker is okay, that kid is a monster. He was huge all night long on every clutch play. Union survived and won, I think they’re the better team but gave RV life on a couple drives with silly penalties but RV was not overmatched at all.

RV is good. Physical and smart and disciplined so far. the officials haven’t been favoring one side or anything but damn they’re inept. They’ve just called a poor game overall. Not in favor of any team per se just terribly managed.

17, Honaker is a monster. They’re very physical.

And I have no qualms with that, I totally get backing your guy. With as many titles as both have, it’s splitting hairs to be honest. Tom was probably more fun but if you needed to raise money from boosters or something Phil’s your guy lol.

Next time you come down let me know, hot dogs on me. I like to rile up the Appy folk but I wouldn’t care if they played a game there. The field is prob in better condition now than it has been in the last 30 years when Appalachia was open lol.

FTR I love Phil, still, and nothing I say is meant to insult him. I think he’s criminally underrated in these kinds of debates bc people simply didn’t like him. But seven state titles, 300 wins, scores of LPD and Region D titles, Phil has to be included on any SWVA Mt Rushmore, arguably a VA one.

I think some of that is the personality difference. I’m def not comparing Phil to these guys but most people wouldn’t say Belichick or Nick Saban inspire guys to run thru a wall for them but they command respect and the players know the coaches will have them in the best position to win. Barry Jones had that kind of love at PV but he wasn’t nearly as successful as a HC. Phil def isn’t as well liked or as revered as Turner but Phil was a master motivator in his own way and you always knew he would do whatever it took to win, because his ego couldn’t tolerate losing lol.

It’s a small school but let’s not downplay the amount of truly great talent Turner had at his disposal. People seem to ding Phil bc he was blessed with talent but Tom wasn’t exactly playing with a bunch of scrubs either lol. Huff, his son, Travis Clark, etc……he had some serious talent in those coal camps.

I agree with every word of this except a couple. I can’t believe you weren’t aware football was actually invented in BSG and we are kind enough to allow all of you heathens to participate in our sport.

I’m one of the people who isn’t a fan of Riggs but I can promise you I have zero influence and have never complained to anyone in any authority about playing in Appy or the horn FWIW.

You should worry about making it first. CC, CW, KW, Poq, etc…….. then maybe you can talk about seeing us in the West. If you do, you’ll realize that LOS advantage you hold might not be so dominant and the diff is, the 2D teams have athletes everywhere and are gonna spread you out and make you defend the entire field.

Not true on the SH part. They came out of the gate HOT and didn’t consistently move the ball until they had wore down the Bears. Graham might be slightly down but they’re still a top 10 2A team. GC is still a good team. RV has not played one good team and their game v Richlands was way closer than it should have been.

Guys let’s not get too excited. RV is gonna come to play and they can test Union in unique ways. I think it’s a one possession, last team with ball wins game.
