Abingdon-Looked like about 50+ but someone said a bunch were in the weight room

Here's the thing. Yes it will be an adjustment for the freshman and some sophomores. But the Juniors and Seniors were all part of Coach Amburgey's scheme previously. So they will pick back up with it pretty quick. Heck my own son still recalls plays and scheme from when he was at Abingdon before. Now will there be a slight learning curve, Yes, but the foundation is still there. So, technically its not apples to oranges. Its more oranges to grapefruit. This is true. I can't fault Amburgey or Colobro for the playoff losses. Reed went into full control freak mode and the rest was history. Reed definitely struggles with game management and offensive play calling. People can say what they want but until you sat through 40+ games and analyzed some of the calls, you tend to just scratch your head. Amburgey on the other hand was always an excellent game manager and play caller for Abingdon. He also has a niche for putting players in a situation to succeed. If he can continue that the Falcons will be fine.

Make no mistake about it. Coach Amburgey is and was the mastermind behind Abingdon's high powered offense that averaged 40+ points a game a couple of years ago. With the returning athletes we have and some coming back out, I'm interested to see what the Falcons can do now without 3 yards and a cloud of dust. There certainly is a buzz of positivity around AHS Football. Coach Amburgey will have em ready to roll come opening night.

Welcome home to the nest Garrett Amburgy as the Falcons new head football coach. Abingdon just got a lot better. Also added to the staff: Chase Nunley, Rob Ratliff, Rocky Vincent, and Eugene Gobble. Welcome back home men Things certainly looking up.

Yes nothing but the best wishes and prayers for Darren with dealing with his family issues. Like UVA stated, "That being said, you Gate City folks do realize that his coaching career has been exceedingly underwhelming without Colobro shepherding him, don’t you? I can think of no better situation to completely demolish your program than to hand over a cratered program to someone who has needed (1) an unprecedented run of athletes and (2) one of the greatest coaches in VHSL history to obtain something resembling success" He is defensive minded and understands defense. Offense and game management, NOT SO MUCH. Speaking from experience from last year where he was the sole decision maker. It cost Abingdon a few games and potentially a playoff win. The turnover in coaches from year to year speaks for itself. He may succeed at GC. He may bring new life to a floundering program. But theres a part that wonders why he waited this long to make a move. Abingdon will be fine this year if we can get the right guy. I've heard some rumors and speculation but nothing definitive. (So we'll leave it at that until something more concrete transpires). But on the upside AHS will have another large senior class with experience and quality talent. So whoever gets the HC job probably will be able to win. Not sure how many but they will win games. Also I'm hearing that since Reed left others who might not have played this year are going to come out.

Regardless, it is the only example we have of consolidation in SWVA. Wise County and Dickenson County have done it and it appears to be the wave of the future for rural school systems with dwindling numbers throughout the coal fields. I'm not saying it will happen, but it seems like school systems are leaning more and more to the option.

Don't forget, Wise County schools did it. There had to be some sort of loan or grants to fund their project. Ridgeview built one of the nicest high schools in SWVA. If you neve been there, you should see it. It's very nice and they have some of the best facilities around.
