Gate City has went to more 7 on 7's in the last year than the previous staff ever went too which would be zero. I know of some kids that went to camps this summer. When Akers got to GC he had two kids that could bench 225 so I would say the weight program has been a joke for a while. Just telling facts.

Foolishness. You think GC never went to 7on 7s before Akers? That's just comically inaccurate. As far as 2  players benching 225... 68, 45, 61, 54, 55, 40, 71, and 50 were all over 225 in prior to Akers getting hired. Probably more that I'm not aware of.

There is literally nothing you can do in a T that can't also be done in the wishbone.  As Barry Switzer once said, the only reason you run the wishbone is to get a slow FB into the play more quickly.  That's the reason for the modification from the T to the wishbone in the late 1960s in Texas HS football...you end up with busted plays if your FB is slow running from the T as opposed to the wishbone.

Parroting patently incorrect statements doesn't make it "well said".  It just makes him doubly wrong, and you wrong for being his personal echo chamber.

G.O.O. - the base blocking rule - is not being used out of the Bum Bone offense. I could enumerate the similarities and differences between the wishbone and T all day, but the point is the blocking scheme doesn't match the offense in its present incarnation. But, by all means, continue to spew your foolishness. It's a free country.

Extremely different formations. Akers bone vs GC classic T. We are "trying" zone reading out of the bone. We leave a defensive tackle unblocked almost every play. In our classic T, we would rip or liz (motion) a back to the playside and literally outnumber the defense. We wouldn't run a lot of misdirection (Akers bone does).  Akers bone involves the QB to spin 180 degrees to hand off to the opposite side, then even fake it with a misdirection to the other side. GC's T would be down hill, come at you with power. Akers bone is run lateral, find the crease and hit it. (ZONE). There are many variations of the T and Bone, making you the idiot if believe there is only 1 T and 1 wishbone. Just like mulitple I-formations and shotgun formations. The PV/Appy T formation was even set up a bit differently than GC's. But decently similar. And those are the variations we have at GC. I played with the T from 9 years old to 18 years old. I know how GC ran it, I still know how it works. I've watched Akers run the bone for 2 years and I've picked up on how it works. So don't tell me I don't have a clue what I'm talking about when I know exactly what's going on. But like I said in the post that you ignored, I'm a firm believer in that you adapt your offense to you offensive skill set. We don't have the speed for misdirection. But we would be better loading up and going downhill in the T, instead of trying to get a back to make a read off of an uncovered defenders to cut up or bounce out. Hat on hat and outnumber them and hope everyone gets a piece on their block then you gain 3-4 yards a pop. It takes all 11 guys to do it, but it works if ran correctly. And the blocking scheme out of GC's T? "GOO" we used to GOO method for years. Football is a simple game of matchups and outnumbered matchups. If you can put 6 on 5 every play you're chances are great. But to leave a down lineman unblocked in a tight formation is just stupid.

    Next!!! Anybody else?

GAP, ON, OVER!!! Yes, Sir!! Simple to read and it works against everything. This would take advantage of GC's big and talented backs / linemen. Scheme for your personnel!! Well said, LHL!!!

  4. Dude had all winter, spring, and summer to develop a QB / offense. When 7 on 7 drills exposed our weakness in that area he quit going to them and decreased his player's opportunities for development as opposed to increasing exposure and improving. I guess he just said 'Screw it, we'll run the ball every down'. You see how that has worked. He didn't send any kids to camps to supplement his coaching deficits. The weight program is a joke. He personally attacks players to the point where he is near universally detested on the team. He has failed to recruit from the hallways because word is out as to how he treats his kids. The fundamentals (avoiding FUMBLES) are severely lacking. There is zero discipline, as one can see by many behaviors LHL outlined. He is driving players away, not bringing players in.

I can't think of one positive thing to say about the guy. Giving him another year will set the program back five and totally waste a talented group of upper classmen in 18.

I have a question for the GC folks on here...and it comes from the impression that I get that tou guys don't like the AD or, in general, the administration. Let's say Akers were gone...what vetting would you guys suggest be done any differently than it was when Akers was hired...and who exactly should do the vetting and hiring?

A lot of guys won't agree with this and that's fine, but my answer is:

No vetting necessary. Hire Jeremy Houseright as HC and let him run the D. Gary Collier and Chad Gose would come back to run the O. Warner could come back and help with D; hire 2 more guys to help clean, paint, and do laundry.

"gotta have the players is what it's all about".

    LMAO

A freakin little league coach can get more out of these players than Akers/staff is right now.  Maybe because you practice in full pads on Thursday or you let a starter miss two practices each week and he still starts.  Cuss your players and allow kids to cuss you back until you get your feelings hurt so you kick one off.  This season is over for these poor kids who have busted their butts.  Sad situation. Thank you Roberts school board and "committee".   What a joke

This is a FACT. I'm all about building mental toughness through conditioning, but there is a right and wrong way to do it. The health of your players has to be a consideration. It currently isn't, and that's why GC's injured list is so long. It's not like the bum was a former college player, ex military, or some other hard boiled background. Dude was a kicker in high school, period. Never caught a pass, never threw a block, never made a tackle IN HIS LIFE. This bum had never once himself attempted what he asks his players to do. Dude thinks he's Glenn Carlock when the toughest work he's ever put in was on some country club tennis court.

To compete offensively, teams must have a spread component. Turner will throw it all over the field and then jump in the T to bleed the clock. Collier and Gose at GC were racking up yards by alternating between  spread and power formations. Apparently, in 1A, D lines just blow up the field without reading the blocks because the bum is teaching his lineman - who have plenty of talent - to not block the down lineman. No respectable coach is going to let the o line have a free shot at their backers; D lineman are taught to squeeze and read from the time they're babies. When the o line try to release to backer they get jammed, LBs go unblocked, and the play is DOA. It would take about one Monday practice to switch to a base blocking scheme and correct the problem.

It's true that the W/L record since 2010 isn't great, but the offense was lit with 2 all state QBs vs the most brutal schedule in the state.

  7. Reed was contacted to gauge interest in the job after Houseright retired. He gave a firm no. The only way he would consider it is if Roberts was gone, and then it would still be a long shot. It's pathetic that he (Roberts) has a job in a school. Totally incompetent teacher and fired by both head coaches that he worked for as a coach. He has open contempt for students at his school. The fact that such an imbecile has a say so in any type of administration or decision making would be comical were it not so detrimental to the students.

James Mitchell scores more points than GC accumulates in total yards. Gonna take years for someone to rebuild this program after we are done letting Akers ruin it.

    Bears 49-0

    It sucks...

This bum's ONLY qualification was that his last name wasn't Houseright. Pitiful.

  9. My prediction: Guys like #54 & #40 call a team meeting. Toys are left at home. Anyone not in the game stands at attention cheering for their teammates. The game is reduced to one on one match ups. Blocking becomes violent. Tackling becomes predatory. The young men of 2017 grow up, remember who they are, and what they stand for.

    And where they come from.

    36 yards of offense.

    2 first downs.

Calling a timeout on 4th and 8 deep in your own territory, then fake it. (Genius!!! They'll never see that coming!!!)

Injured players playing on phones during game.

Injured players and reserves laughing and cutting up during butt stomping.

Whispers about the coaching from players after the game.

I believe we have officially drove the last nail in the coffin tonight.

You know it's bad when fans start leaving before the 4th qtr even starts.

Welcome to the new norm of Gate City football!

This is, for me,  the most upsetting aspect: the acceptance by players of losing. When I look at my Facebook feed after a 35-0 drubbing and see players posing for pictures with big grins on their faces it makes me sick. No idea how to fix it; ya'll tell me. Maybe Jarhead was right.

    On to Union, I guess...

I got to see the weight room this year for the first time since the mid 90s. Definitely a shame where it is now.

No facilities upgrades of any kind for GC sports since 1997. Not trying to highjack the thread, but GC has the worst overall (basketball, volleyball, baseball, track, softball) facilities around. The visitor's side of Legion was condemned in 2015. The SB's sports complex decision might have something to with that. I know for a fact that when South's current HC interviewed, he recommended to the AD that he stop showing candidates the facilities.

  12. Can't speak on the kid's reaction, but blaming it on a former coach is just dumb. GC's coach is a bum, and the mess is all his. Attitude reflects leadership. The problem starts with the SB and the AD - also bums. Acres was the only man that would take the job; no one else wanted it after 1. Meeting GC's esteemed AD & 2. seeing GC's crumbling facilities. GC finishes 2017 either 1-9 or 0-10, depending on how they play against Lee.
