  2. I believe it will be Poquoson (A), Strasburg (B), Radford (C) and Graham (D), which means it's guaranteed not to be.

  4. Radford didn't look good tonight, but we might want to pump the brakes on writing them off.
  5. Are there different set-ups for an NFHS broadcast? I'm used to the single camera mounted to the press box or similar set-up. In the Abingdon-Ridgeview game, there appears to be at least three cameras.
  6. Sadly. virtually every American sports league has diluted their post-season field to increase revenue. Here's a sample of leagues with their original number of playoff teams compared to present day: NCAA BBall-8 to 68; NCAA Football Playoffs-2 to 4 with plans in place to move to 8 or even 12 teams; NBA-6 to 16 teams; MLB-2 to 12; NFL-2 to 14. VHSL has followed the same trend since the late 1970s, which is why I'm doubtful we'll ever see contraction of playoff teams or classifications.
  7. I'd pay to see the Houseright's Thanksgiving family football game, particularly if the Beasley cousins stopped over.
  8. Just be glad we don't have Oklahoma's classifications. 1A and 2A, the smallest 11-man divisions, have 62 and 64 teams respectively. 3A,4A and 5A, the mid-size schools, each have 32 teams. The largest divisions, 6A-I and 6A-II, only have 16 teams each.
  9. Yelp. Also, Alabama and Oklahoma both have 7 classifications despite a smaller population than Virginia.
  10. Honest question here. Does anybody really think there's a chance VHSL would reduce the number of classifications? There may be members who support the general concept, but only until it impacts their school directly. I just don't see enough members willing to increase the number of teams they compete against for regional and state titles. I don't support expansion, but I think there's a much better chance we'd see additional classifications in the future. I've noticed this is the trend in some other states.
  11. If you're of fan of earning a playoff berth, 1970 to 1985 was the golden era. VHSL only had three classifications (A,AA, AAA), with very large districts. For example, the SWD generally consisted of 10 AA teams (Marion, PH, Abingdon, JSB, VHS, GC, Graham, Tazewell, Richlands, and Grundy). The only other district in Region IV was the New River Valley, which generally consisted of 8 AA teams (George Wythe, Giles, Narrows, Radford, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Galax, and Carroll County). From 1970 to 77ish, you had to win the district to make the playoffs. Your first playoff game was the regional championship (SWD vs NRV). The second game was the state semis (Region IV vs Region III). The third playoff game was the state title game. From 1978ish to 1985, VHSL expanded by essentially awarding 2 teams each from the SWD and NRV a playoff berth. This, of course, made a team's first game a regional semi-final. So, in 1970, Gate City won the state by going 13-0, whereas Giles won the state in 1980 by going 14-0. Once the VHSL went from crowning 3 champs to 6 champs in 1986, they've struggled to find a satisfactory system.
  12. Marion's only chance is if Tazewell takes a dive to rid their trophy case of this.

  18. I might have some details incorrect. The yellow helmets were loaned by E&H. They sold the red helmets to last years' seniors. The HC usually orders new ones, but Ginn got a late start and didn't realize it.
