Update. Stay tuned. Evidently this one fan wasn't the only one upset at the horn during the cadence. Monday, Graham will file an official complaint with the VHSL not on the horn, but on the horns use during the cadence and snap.

Stay tuned.....we can revisit this thread Monday afternoon after the official complaint is sent, then we can talk about "who cares" about the use of the horn. Blow the horn and have fun. Blow it repeatedly during the cadence, and you will get dealt with. Union crossed the line. They also got shi* kicked 48-7

Class act statement. Well done sir, well done

I must have hit pretty close to the mark. Then look at you, trying to once again be a keyboard gangster, after everyone from Union on her congratulated your team and wished them well. Then you do that. Heck, I even spoke to Lester after the game and told him how much fun he was to watch and wished him luck down the road and at the next level. I’ll PayPal you some lunch money young man. Sounds like yours was taken again.

You know, this morning after talking to some parents of the Graham players, they were happy as heck with the win, but very upset with the train horn with Graham standing at the line of scrimmage and well past being out of the huddle. That's about as low class as you can get.

Whoever the two or three FOOLS running the train horn were, I hope the decent people in Big Stone and Appy discipline or fire that guy. I have no problem with train horns. They are awesome. But sounding them when the opponent is at the line of scrimmage in the middle of the cadence? That's pathetic and even though it's the actions of a few, it reflects piss poorly on Union.

Incredible class by Tony who called the Dogs off in the late second after the acts of classlessness against his team and his kids. I would have put up 80. That type of beating would have forced the VHSL to take a look at the train horn DURING the CADENCE due to the amount of attention it would have recieved.

The Union AD and Coach Turner should issue an apology to Graham High School players, coaches, and fans. Will this happen? I doubt it, but it might. If it doesn't, Union will have dropped a notch in my book.

Horns are all good and blowing them tons of times is great. I wish Graham had one. But........blowing them during the cadence is absolutely sad, pathetic, and low class. This is why I titled Tony in the post. This dude is a damn class act! To show that kind of restraint speaks at his character and maturity level.

My COY for 2019. Tony "Bone" Palmer. A true class-act.

Graham came ready. Have heard nothing but good things about coach Palmer. Wish him luck down the road. The boys came ready.  Obviously the horn didn’t bother them. Your false starts we’re by the player farthest from it. But I could see you being that kind of coach. Then get run out of town when your star qb or other player get injured and out (God forbid that happen). You need to quit being a b!tch and change your tampon. Your team was clearly the better team. If anything, it’s made those boys better playing in a loud environment. You are just a pathetic person. Jeez. We congratulate you guys and wish you well down the road. Your just a punk that prolly got his lunch money taken as a kid and now have the bravery of the internet to be a big man.

Once again, congrats graham and Palmer.

You can just crawl back home and look in the mirror and tell yourself “I told those Union people!”

Next time have some testicular fortitude and come say something yourself.

i watched appy beat burton 3 0 in 1990b region title game. if you know the history of appys kicking game then you know that was a very rare occurence

That was 89. Appy beat TS on a kick the week prior. Billy Owens was the best kicker Appy ever had it could be argued. The Appy/burton game in 1990 was the brawl in the qtr. button lost state title game to king and Queen 21-20 on a missed two point conversion attempt.

You’re correct about our kicking game haha.

Man that global warming is making the ocean rise faster than expected.  Mitchell Stadium is in Bluefield, WV.  The Bluefield, WV police are at Grahams home games.  Bluefield, WV also has a noise ordinance.  I wouldnt be surprised if it was our infamous city manager who silenced that horn.  He was the first one that popped in my head.  I wouldnt blame school officials so quickly.  The stadium is owned by Bluefield, WV and the city manager is something else.  Surprised he didnt allow it and then fine somebody for violating the ordinance.  Any way he can leach a dollar from you, he will do it

It’s the timing of it that runs most of us raw. Nothing was said when we were down 10-0. Once we went up 13-10 here comes the police on the ADs command. That was told to me by the officers themselves. I talked with them at halftime about it. They chose not to remove the fan, just have the air horn removed. It was a chump move.

If some how Holston pulls a upset and Burton slides past Cheathowie.. It would be Holstons chance to avenge the 2-0 loss to Burton in 2009...Stranger things have happened!!

2-0?  I'd like to hear the story of that game.  Defensive battle.

Anyone have stats on Calhoun(?) from GC ?

Not sure of the season for Calhoun, but he had 14 yards on six carries Friday night.

Doesn't own anything. The old SWD teams played at a higher classification and the competition much tougher. Sometimes you had 4A schools in the old SWD compared to many 1A schools in the old Lonesome Pine.  The LPD schools were playing at their size/enrollments. The old SWD was playing AA ball in the 70s through the mid 80s when there was 3 classifications and these teams should have been Single A, and when we went to six classifications in 86, the same was happening as many played 3A and 4A and the schools were traditionally, at the lowest end of enrollment statewide for their classification.

If I'm not mistaken GC was in the SWD in 1974 when they won their second title and maybe in the old Highlands District in 97. These SWD teams were battling historical powerhouses in the playoffs teams like Blacksburg, Salem, Martinsville in the 70-80s, Jefferson Forest, Rustburg and oh yeah...Giles. meanwhile, the LPD was battling it out with Parry McCluer, Madison County, and Bath Co.

PV had some battles over a solid team and I will give them that in Central of Lunenberg. That program was legit, but PV had three losing seasons in a row the year before consolidation and it's last title in 98ish, and Appy didn't have a winning season in it's final 3 yrs before consolidation and it's last title in 1997. That's been over 20 years. There's no question in my mind that Richland's, GC, Graham, and even Giles (dropped years before) has put a dent in those historical titles for the old LPD programs of which are nearly all consolidated.. All of a sudden, as Union has surely felt, the road to getting to the title game is incredibly more difficult. Union may have had the best team in 2017, but that's what makes it tough with the restructuring in classifications. Graham I can assure was the best team in 3A on 2 occasions it didn't win it, buy at that level of competition, you can easily lose. Same for Richland's in 93 and 2010 in my opinion, but was banned from the 4A playoffs in 93. What Union has experienced is much like what Graham and Richland's have experienced for years minus Graham's 10 year abscence from football for the latter 2000s through the mid 2010-20 decade.

I won’t disagree with most of this. Well layed out info here.

I was just adding to the “my daddy can beat up your daddy” discussion lol.

Buddy this is a football thread. Nice try.

Correct. It’s a football thread. This whole argument is kinda moot. But going back to 1970 and looking at Richlands, Marion, graham, Tazwell, lebanon and Haysi (couldn’t remember if they were in the SWD). The SWD has 6 state titles. The M7 is a renamed LPD. Appalachia high school has 6 titles alone. Throw in PV’s 8, clintwood’s 4 and JJ Kelly and norton each with 1, that brings it to 20.

These are rough state I quickly got from the four seasons page.

Yes norton is the only one open still. But the history of the M7/LPD owns this little argument. It’s all for kicks and giggles.

Safe travels graham. We will see y’all Friday night.

Mitchell Stadium has made it to the finals for the best high school stadium in America.  We've won over some big names, and big city's.  How cool would it be to be able to attach that title to our hometown.
Would probably help bring the State Championship game to Mitchell.

Please go vote...  early and often...  as many times as your fingers can click

So how is it fair that a college stadium is in the mix for best high school stadium. Were there others like that. Hardly seems fair to public school owned complexes to go against a college one.

    Good evening UNION FANS...

I know few questions & answers has already went around on different topics...But since we played Abingdon tonight what are some things UNION done Good, Bad and Ugly??

And things we could improve going forward?

Not having key injuries would be a start. Lol. CJ played a tough gritty game last night!

  12. 6 hours ago, BigWinners said:

Peaking early is never a good thing. It hurt Ridgeview big last year and looks like Union this year.

I wouldn’t say we peaked early. We played lights out early. Then a couple players (both RBs/LBs) were dinged up.  Then their injuries got worse to the point that some is out for the season and the other is there physically but not able to be himself. Now teams can focus on Polier. He’s still pounding the rock. But we went from a triple threat to a bull in a china shop.

We are singing the same song graham had to sing early in the season. Our just happened at the wrong time. Injuries suck. But it’s part of the game.

On that note, what happens to Ridgeview qb Phillips?  Heard the hill kid playing qb last night. He hurt too. Hope not.

  13. Regardless of what town/school you support, wins puts butts in the seats.  A team gets hot, and people come out of the woodworks.  Alumni show up and so do people from towns whos team is down/not very good.  Union is not exempt from this.  Appy experienced this as well, as I'm sure all of our teams has.

But you've got to admit, when The Park is packed, its a fun and rowdy atmosphere!

*Disclaimer -  not predicting these finishes, just showing scenarios based on likely outcomes of remaining games.

This is shaping up to be an unusual finish to 2D. Not so much for the "anything can happen" finishes, but more so for the "anything has ALREADY happened." Most teams are already set in a very narrow area of seeding.

Ridgeview is finishing #1 as long as they beat either Pikeville or Abingdon. If they lose to both then only an 8-2 Union can overtake them. Ridgeview is guaranteed at least the #2 spot.
Union is guaranteed at least #2 unless Richlands beats Graham and all the rider points fall Richlands way.
Gate City is trapped at #7 unless Tazewell really flubs up and loses one of their remaining 3 games. Even if they defeat Central, they will still be #7 without a Tazewell loss.
#8 seed will be a battle between Marion and Va High. Winner of that game gets in, loser stays home. There is a narrow window for Marion to get in with a loss, but it would take some upsets for certain.
#3 seed goes to the winner of Graham/Richlands. Graham cannot overtake a 7-3 Union. Richlands can, but will need help with riders.
Central can go as high as #4 with a win over GC AND a Richlands win over Graham or #5 with a Graham win over Richlands. Could get #4 with the Graham win with rider point help. They are a lock for #6 if they lose to GC.
Tazewell's fate rests with Central. #6 with a Central win, #5 with a GC win. Can't really go anywhere else.

Lee and Lebanon are out. John Battle could only get in with a Lee win and an upset over GC or Union.

In each of these, I'm giving Letcher Co 1 more win, Paintsville 2 more, Radford 3 more wins, Pikeville at least 1 more win depending on Ridgeview game and Bluefield 3 more wins. Paintsville's remaining 2 games are 50/50 shot.

I did give Pikeville the win over Ridgeview in each scenario just to show how cemented Ridgview is in at least the #2 spot with an 8-2 record. It will be a difficult game though. Union would win the head to head tie breaker if they and Richlands finish tied, but Richlands' rider points will be easier to come by than Union, so there may not be a tie.

Also, keeping track of the top few teams from C for semi-final purposes. As it stands now, only Ridgeview has a chance of outpointing a 9-1 Radford team, and it will be close. If Radford loses to Glenvar Friday, and realistically this is the only shot of them not being 9-1, then they will fall to 2nd or 3rd with Appomattox taking the #1 spot at approximately 247-249 points. If that happens only an 8-2 or better Union or Ridgeview team will be able to outpoint them. So, if a team other than Ridgeview or Union represents D they will be traveling for the semis unless the 3rd seed or lower wins Region C.

What would it look like if RV lost to Pikeville and Abingdon?

Dude, since you are an Appy guy, a true story for you that makes this a small world.  I would stay with a local guy and his wife when I would go down that way for derailments which was about 5 times. He was older than me, but was kind of the local railroad host, him and his wife when I would go to Andover and that area in the early 90s for derailments. His son played on two Appy state title teams I think in 91 and 93 or 92 and 94ish, and he started on the line for three seasons. I lost contact with this local dude by 1995. We just fell out of touch as I left the railroad.

Fast forward to 2018 and I get a condo at the beach. I'm moving my stuff in and the wife and I are getting it ready for renting and a guy offers us help moving some stuff in and boom, it's him. He lives next door.  He and his wife had lived at the beach for 19 years. I hadn't seen him in nearly 25 years and out of the blue, there he is.

My wife and I just went to the beach this past Saturday and returned yesterday. The first thing he asked me this time was, "what happened to them G-Men." I knew he would go there, but oh well, a good dude. He's a lot older now, and a die-hard Union guy that follows them closely.

That’s crazy haha. Small world indeed. I would have played with his son in 92. But the odds of running into him at the beach like that is insane!

Thanks for sharing. I’m a nerd when it comes to these small towns. Love hearing stories like this.

Not much difference at all than Radford. I read BSG listed as 5600 on wiki and Appy with 1700. I assume there are still areas in the county, although not big, but places like Andover, East Stone, Exeter that go to Union. If you figure this population in the county around BSG and Appy, say it's 400 total. That's roughly 7300.

Radford is an Independent City. With a population of 17 K and Radford U being 9.2 K, that leaves 7800-8000ish.  Not a huge difference than Union. That 700 or so population difference turns out probably to be about 80-100 or so more kids at Radford than Union. Si there is a difference, but not huge.

As for VA High, I can't figure out how that one works. With a city population of 17K, a bunch of them split and go to the county, John Battle?  Does Washing to County have many people outside of Abingdon and Bristol, or is JSB getting most of it's students from Bristol City? It seems like VH should be able to field 3A or 4A student numbers with the Bristol population. I've never understood that one. But....Radford, like Blacksburg, easy to explain as their are Huge Universities there, so their listed populations aren't really the Populations related to High School. And yes, Blacksburg and Radford VA do count the University populations in their town/city population numbers.

Gotta give you credit pal. You know your Appy and surrounding coal camp geography. Impressive. Mentioned Andover and Exeter. Wow.

Honaker is currently 10th in Region 1D points.  After this week, they still have two for sure losses to go in their remaining three games (PH and Ridgeview)... and Northwood won't bring any rider points.  If Honaker DOES win, will they be the first team ever to win a district and NOT make the playoffs?

I want to think the 1989 Hopewell Blue Devils were the Central district co-champs and didn't make the playoffs.  I went back to the four seasons website and they only played 10 games that year.  They upset Thomas Dale in Hopewell that year to give them a share of the title.  I'll try and find more info to verify this, but I'm about 90% certain that how it happened.

    What a scenario!
