  1. Yep. My cousin threw winning TD pass. My other cousin caught the TD pass
  2. Got best and Worst Best 2013 Union vs. Richlands-Union was down 14-0 at halftime. Fast forward and it’s 21-14 Richlands. I think Union turned it over on downs with about 3 minutes left. I got up to make my way to my truck. I didn’t think Union could stop Richlands and was gassed. Well I got to the East end zone and Union had stopped them. So I hung out at the end zone. Then they tied the game up 21 with about 15 seconds left. Richlands calls what’s presumably the last play in regulation and they’re ready for overtime. Pass. Union defender intercepts it and runs it in untouched. Union wins 27-21. I called my parents and said “What did you think about that?” They were listening on WAXM. They said the commentators were yelling so loudly that they couldn’t make out what happened. Told them what happened and they were stunned. 2001 PV vs Gate City. Regular season. I was in 8th grade. Powell Valley had lost 2 consecutive to GC in Gate City’s last 2 years as a D3 team. GC’s first year back in the LPD. PV led for the majority of the game. Going up 2 touchdowns a couple of times. A very young but still very good Gate City team just wouldn’t go away. Gate City scores a TD in the last few seconds to make the score 35 all and go to OT. Gate City gets ball first. 4th down. Kick no good. PV gets the ball, first play touchdown Sheldon Adams. PV wins 41-35. Worst 1999 PV vs JJ Kelly. PV had lost a lot of players like Julius Jones from the great 98 team. Looked poised for another 10-0 season. JJ Kelly had been awful for years. Seemed to be improved. PV was obviously a heavy favorite. PV went in. Halftime they were down 13-0. Thought “Maybe they’ll come back.” Lost 19-14. Was worst from PV perspective. 2002 PV at GC. A very young and down PV team that had improved as the season went along. Vs a juggernaut GC team that looked poised to go undefeated and win state. PV couldn’t get a single thing going and lost 49-0. 2003 PV at GC for the first round of the playoffs. A PV team hungry to avenge 3 straight losses to Gate City. Gate City had torn through the season in 02 only to be upset by George Wythe. First half was tight. 14-13 at the half in favor of Gate City. Second half happened and it appeared to be anybody’s game. Well. PV couldn’t get a thing going. The result became clear when Gate City got a scoop and score to go up 35-13. Gate City won 49-13.
  3. I need to drive there and do some fishing at fall break. Or take my rods and tackle box with me to work and after school lets out go fish the Nolichucky in Erwin.
  4. With it being a rivalry and Lee being improved, the game started out with Lee standing toe to toe with Union in the first quarter. Union wore them down and Lee ran out of gas in the 2nd quarter.
  5. Neither team looked impressive last night. Both have some things to clean up and I am sure the coaches will be working on some things. Namely senseless penalties. Both. Let it be a learning experience for both. If we’re assuming there will be a rematch in November then I look for that game to be one for the ages.
  6. Fair enough then. High emotion games are definitely what makes it fun. But you can’t let it get out of hand. If your team is getting a lot of penalties then you as the coach need to step in. They’re kids but kids playing football need their coach to be the coach and step in. My point is that it can cost the kids and their teammates. A program I have much respect for is Appomattox and their coach Doug Smith. I just hate them kicking our butts lol. But I have respect for how they conduct themselves and how Doug Smith works with them. Blanket statement: No team is going to have picture perfect behavior. But personal fouls need to be addressed by the coach. Any coach.
  7. And that is on both Turner and Palmer. Well said.
  8. Yes. Union needs to address the inability to win a big game. Absolutely. They have been on WCYB Friday nights and are 1 for 4 in those games. Sounds like Palmer is the one who needs to man up and fix the penalties. Just a thought.
  9. Oh Union had a lack of discipline last night for sure. But Turner’s not the one complaining about one sided flags. I saw some moments when Graham should have been flagged for taunting, but weren’t. To be fair, Union should have had a few more flags. Lack of discipline on both teams. That’s on both coaches. Union’s lack of discipline does not negate Graham’s lack of discipline. But the lack of discipline seems to be a real problem for Graham. Kids are learning. But if as a coach you are whining in the paper about penalties against your team instead of saying “We need to fix that” then you are just making excuses and telling the community that you won’t address the lack of discipline.
  10. My take: Graham was the better team. I made the comment that Graham’s penalties would do them in. Union stalling out deep in Graham territory hurt. But Palmer’s comments about the flags? Congratulations on giving Union some bulletin board material. Palmer has had how much time to address the lack of discipline? Control your players.
  11. In Peanut Football in Big Stone my coach would make us do what he called grass drills when we did screwed up stuff. If we loafed around, grass drills. Senseless penalties at the games, grass drills at practice the next day.
  12. Both need to address the lack of discipline tonight.
  13. If Union wins it will be from Graham penalties.
  14. I would have said something. Be direct. Tell them their actions are not ok. And after that make your point. I have jumped onto other fanbases for making fun of a certain Union fan who tends to be very vocal, but he’s also got an Intellectual Disability. It was during the PV days. He was doing the John Cena “You can’t see me!” and people were egging him on. I made my point and that was that.
  15. Yeah I am not sure of them donating anything. They might have.
  16. 2015 Union didn’t have any train horn.
  17. Most definitely. The bad fans ruin it for the good fans. There have been times when football players have behaved badly. -According to some Gate City fans, in 2001 some Powell Valley players were flipping them off. I don’t remember. It wouldn’t surprise me if some Gate City fans were provoking them. But as a player you have to learn how to tune out hecklers. -In 2015 Union hosted Graham second round of the playoffs. There were Graham players acting like jerks, making rude gestures toward the Union fanbase. Some of the Union fans could have been instigating it. I didn’t see anything. But as I have previously stated, you have to learn to tune out hecklers. Athletes need to avoid getting into power struggles with opposing fanbases. Fans need to learn to keep their mouths shut.
  18. Wise is a small town wanting to be a big city. UVA Wise is a small college wanting to be a big college. The arrogance is overwhelming.
  19. Parking at Walmart High School is ridiculous.
  20. Gate City’s fans made a lot of people pull against them. Any fanbase in the town of Wise is difficult to like.
