1. Honestly, as much as I'd prefer to think otherwise, of course they do, oak hill was a much less physically talented team than bluefield in my opinion, but bluefield had some mistakes and oak hill didn't, and they had a passing game going that bluefield wasn't able to adjust to in time. Poca has what I consider to be "their" biggest advantage in this game, "belief", a powerful thing in competition. They have confidence and experience in big games.
2. It's around 100 miles to charleston, around or almost 90 miles from charleston to the ohio state line, 40 to 50 miles north into ohio to cambridge?, where you turn east towards wheeling and at least 60 to wheeling from there.
3. You have to be gettin it to make that time though to be honest, my guess is to plan on 5 hours driving reasonably safe.
4. Every trip I've made to wheeling, all 4 of them. were up and back on friday friday night. In '99 I was by myself, in '01 Thor was with me but obviously each time I drove the entire way. Unfortunately the last 2 games I knew the outcome in the 3rd quarter and got a jump on the travel back quickly, and was well into ohio towards 77 with the game still going on on the radio, and back in bluefield reading the message boards by 2:30 a.m., if you watche the enitre game you can still easilybe back by 4 or 5 a.m. at the latest.
5. There isn't better parking at any high school stadium that I know of in either wv or va. The city park parking lot used to be the airport runway long ago, it easily holds traffic for 10,000 people.
6. Yeah curtis would talk about him, and his others. I also know jackie. Although it's hard to single anyone on bluefield's team out, morris is an exceptional player. Have you watched bluefield this season?
7. That's a wise coaching move. It inspires the players, it makes it more fun rather than business like, which is an advantage, and more than anything, after practicing at wv's stadium, they are much less likely to be intimidated at mitchell stadium.
8. "WEIR FACES THE long road to Bluefield this weekend for its Class AA quarterfinal game with the Beavers. But the Red Riders will get a boost from one of their most-famous alumni and the hottest football player in the state. As part of the seven-hour planned trip to its hotel in Princeton, Weir plans to practice Friday morning at Mountaineer Field under the watch of WVU tailback Quincy Wilson. Wilson led the Red Riders to the 1998 AA state championship over DuPont. This is Weir's first playoff appearance since that season. "This can't be about the trip, and I keep telling the kids that," said Coach Tony Filberto, who was an assistant in 1997 when Weir traveled to Bluefield for an AA semifinal. "We're going to enjoy the journey, stop and visit with Quincy, and get ready to go play a very good football team. "It doesn't matter if the trip is three hours or six hours." Kickoff between Weir (9-2) and Bluefield (10-1) is set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Stadium"
9. I honestly can't see westside defeating wayne, although that's the reason they have the games. Likewise though I agree with what bluefield rules is suggesting, I'm more concerned about bluefield playing their best and advancing to the 3rd round themselves, which if they do play their best in my opinion they will. Likewise I'll be at graham's game friday evening as well outside the gate.
10. Congrats to the mavs on an exceptional season. As mentioned, not much was expected with the youth of the team and yet they did earn and enjoy a playoff game. And as always, theyplayed hard and represented monroe county well. Congrats and good fortune to them. Go mavs!
11. In my opinion weir could potentially be a hard game for bluefield. They have some athletes and a passing game that has to be respected, as well as quickness on d. Everyone from around here has been classy overall, but hopefully, there's still more focus on the 2nd round from the team and students. They "must" continue to play with the enthusiasm and as good as a team as they have been. Upsets happen, even a week after a team seems as strong as bluefield did against oak hill. They have to go out and continue to earn it and perform even harder each week. Now is the time for them to step it up another notch..
12. I consider Curtis a good friend also. And have thought about how much he would enjoy this season often also. We went to the bluefield pulaski county game and to capitol for the playoff game in '92, those games stand out, and then we talked or stood around in the bleachers at most away games also as well. We had gone to school, he was a year ahead, and then we worked with each other for the city for some months, often getting in to something back then, we have quite the stories and yarns. Cutris was/is such an affable guy. Always good to read from another bluefield beaver fan.
13. "I would rather get beat in a close game with an Austin East or Bluefield than beat Lee 61-0." Which I agree with about gate city, salem ect., and likely others here at bluefield to as well. The big thing is you all schedule Lee and feel this way, and bluefield schedules Lee and overall likely feels that way, so with all due respect to lee high and their program and fans, bluefield and gate city should do away with lee high and schedule each other. I doubt lee high would care much and might prefer some different opponents. Bluefield has their 1 or 2 lower caliber programs on the scehdule in most seasons whether it's lee or not, they should contact the gate city caliber teams and suggest a series. I'd be surprised if lee still cares to schedule bluefield in '04 anyhow, but maybe they do who knows. Anyhow gate city's coach colobro is exactly correct about that attitude of big margin's of victories, it's the players that matter. It's good to read that. Coach Simon has done very well about that this season also. against Lee bluefield scored on the 1st or 2nd play of the 2nd quarter to go up by 33, and bluefield started substituting. Lee's coach actually had a very complimentary quote about bluefield for that after the game which I thought was 1 of the best compliments bluefield could have and has had in a few seasons. And the starters were out of the game against liberty raleigh with around 8 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter up by 30 some. Anyhow, maybe the only things between some better games is the phone and some advance notice.
14. Yeah the graham powell valley posts were the idea for this, although we'd written about bluefield gate city or salem on the other message board before. Bluefield has played 1 1a team in modern football history that I know of, Pikeville Ky, in '95, but they likely counted as aa for bluefield. But that's the thing about those gate city powell valley games for bluefield, they would count as aa teams in wv, so they aren't unreasonable. Unlikely to ever be scheduled, but it wouldn't be a matter of concern of classification. That said, appreciate the work on this message board, it really compliments the swva football site, and is 1 of the better sports message boards I've seen.
15. Actually I did consider princeton graham, princeton pulaski county, beckley pulaski county and bluefield powell valley, but I figured that would have been to many games to vote for overall. The bigger emphasis was on games that have never been played, and might not ever be played, such as bluefield gate city or bluefield salem.
16. Only having some fun with these features.
17. If mount view plays well they have the speed to defeat bridgeport. They have the ability to defeat poca also, but they'll really have to play their best as poca is more of a fundamentally sound team that plays well in big games and has a lot of playoff experience. But mount view does have the potential in these games, especially against bridgeport in my opinion. Congrast on their victory against tyler consolidated, I thought they might be the best team on that side of the playoffs from what I'd read. But maybe they were, aside from mount view. We'll see. Good fortune to them!!!!
18. '97 semis, bluefield's undefeated season with the exceptional d. Bluefield was 1 of the few if not the only high school teams to ever "contain" quincy wilson, he did well though, with around 150 some yards. That game is 1 of my best all time bluefield beaver football memories.
19. Bluefield is simply playing very good football presently. There d is what it has been all season, very fast, physical and formidable. Their o is playing better than they have all season and they seemed to have made some adjustments on a few plays that I thought were warranted around mid season. Chris martin started runnning the ball better a few games ago and without a doubt after this game he is 1 of bluefield's biggest threats. For the 1st time in a few seasons bluefield is back to where they can score from anywhere. In particular, they are using a quick pitch to martin after he goes in motion to the right side that makes very good use of his speed and is a hard play to defend. I mentioned they should have such a play mid season, and it does well. Not only that, but martin seems faster than I've ever known him to be. I knew he was quick, but in the last few games he's simply looked fast, 4.5 fast. Along with martin, all their other weapons are playing hard and have big gains on the ground. They are also not turning the ball over. That's my playoff update, not to sing to much about their success to this point as they have 3 potentially hard games to go before they can be satisfied with anything. And 1 game at a time. It does seems as if they have been working hard, continue to do so bluefield and maintain a humble, earn it type of attitude. They should do well if they play their best. This is a season for opportunity. Good fortune to bluefield and congrats to oak hill for not quitting and on being the 1 team to have defeated bluefield this season. Also good fortune to coach martin from oak hill, an exceptional coach, as he moves on to coach elsewhere. beaver GOD bless.
