  1. Bigger than Zach? Where was he? I saw the whole game, and they had a couple of decent sized guys, but when did you last see Zach? He is as wide as he is tall!
  2. I was at BC vs. PV but kept in touch via cell phone, GC was up 21-0 at the half and apparently was very sloppy in the 2nd half accomplishing very little. Pound scored in the last minute of the game. Lots of miscues and penalties.
  3. I wanted to see a barnburner and i left very disappointed! The Bobcats are a good team, i don't think they are a great team. Coach Robbin's said they were the best team he had seen in his 22 years of coaching?????? He must not get out too much! The Bobcats have speed to burn on the ends , the backs are not huge, but PV looked in slow motion at times. The shock to me was the smallish line, offensive and defensive for BC whipped PV all night long. They didn't tackle well and the b'cat backs kept their legs churning and carried tacklers all night for extra yardage. I heard the QB for BC was injured yet he played all night, some of their fans said he was a lot better runner than he showed tonight. PV couldn't run the ball (except Robbins on the keeper at times) and couldn't make the big play often enough to catch up. #8, #14, and #21 were burners and they burned the vikes all night on sweeps, and #8 ran tough inside. PV really got dominated physically tonight. I left disappointed for the most part, but BC may have held back a little, because i felt they could nearly score at will if they wanted to. They jumped out 7-0 and then seemed to score easily after each of PV's scores.
  4. You are not actually who i posted this to! Still, nobody said either one of GC or RHS was invincible! The one who posted and said that this was the greatest team ever at Grundy, then dogged Richland's schedule and trashed GC got me started. That in it's self is no big deal to me, trash talking is a way of life in sports nowadays. The context that GC was thrown in as a weak link on the schedule of Richlands is what i decided to respond to. I'm not mad! Don't take it too personally, i just decided to respond to some of the things posted. In the long run it doesn't matter who either of you have played come Friday night! It will be 11 on 11, and it sounds like it will be an epic! I hope it lives up to the hype! If Grundy ends up 14-0 and wins the state I will say congrats! I always pull for the local teams! Let's win a few more before we call them the "greatest ever!"
  5. Why is it that some folks want to trash GC? Is it hatred? Is it jealousy? I don't understand why in the world someone would feel the need to trash the Devils in a post about Grundy and Richlands. I just wanted to read some opinions about the game. I was impressed with Richlands, and in all honesty they should've beaten us. They didn't go for the jugular when they had us down, or maybe GC didn't let them. I was as good a game as i have seen in a while. Before today i didn't care who won, but i've become a Blue tornado fan! I obviously don't talk for all the Devil fans, but i am proud of the Big Blue this year, and am glad to be 2-0! We down here at this "little A school" are just so lucky to still be winning since dropping down! Please! I know anyone can throw opinions and venom around just by getting a logon. That is okay also, just wondering where/why all the hatred coming (apparently) from Grundy fans. The post i'm referring to is at least the fifth in the last three weeks from a Wave fan about GC. Maybe they should remember that GC has 4 state championships and three came in AA while Grundy was a part of Region IV. We also had many Region IV champions in that span and Grundy NEVER won one when they had to go through GC! I know they couldn't have beaten GC the last three years either. I guess if you they don't go 14-0 and win the State title it will be a total waste of a season since they have their greatest team ever. I could almost understand a post like that if it came from a G-men fan since they have a great tradition also. They would have something to talk smack about. I find it amusing that in the same post that i am referencing the person said (as a validation) that you had beaten Graham and Richlands had not! I guess that says it all right there! You validate yourselves by your performance against the Graham's and GC's of the region! I do not represent GC in any way shape or form! I am a fan, former player (Not very good at that!), and overall lover of high school sports. This is also why I am going to be in Big Stone Gap on Friday to watch what i hope will be a classic matchup of two very good high school teams. We folks down at this "little A" school like to await the end of the year to see if we had our greatest team ever! We do have, of course, a reference point to compare teams to which can take awhile. We've had so many good ones! HA!
  6. Some of you folks who post on here get me tickled! GC's defense was lucky? Why can't you just call a good game a good game? I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Richlands is going to have a good year as will GC! Will GC win the LPD? I honestly have grave doubts myself, but we will still get a chance to play for it! We also get PV at home which will help. GC has only lost one game there since 98 (Floyd in the A Div.2 Semi's). It takes a "Big Man" to be so critical of High School kids (14-18 yr olds) on an online forum. I do understand the animosity toward GC.(not to the extent some people have) A lot of GC fans "hate" Phil Robbins, which amuses me also. None of them complain about Coeburn or Pound's coaches, I wonder why? I don't hear/read, anyone from GC saying we were going to run roughshod over anyone this year, just don't confuse that with us not being any good. I predict between 8-2 and 10-0, with 9-1 likely. Will they beat many people 73-0? I doubt it, but this year has very little to do with the last several. A great team in High School doesn't come along every year GC has been very good since the mid 90's (at least)! Grundy has had the opportunity to witness that first hand several times themselves. When GC won big then lost to Rustburg 7-0, I guarantee Grundy with a huge line would've give the Red Devils fits on a cold rainy day. The problem for Wave fans was they couldn't keep GC from scoring 42 the week before. Grundy was good! GC was quite a bit better! Will PV be better than GC? We'll just have to wait and see, I for one will be there with bells on. I look for an exciting season again down here at Legion Field. Good luck to Richlands the rest of the way, i see them between 7-3 and 9-1 now that they are 0-1.
  7. It's definately postponed (GC/Radford) until Sunday at 1:30
  8. "Lord I apologize...and be with the starvin' pygmies in New Guinia" I knew it about ten seconds after I posted, I just didn't get a chance to get online 'till now. I was talking about Jefferson Forest with the loaded team full of future college talent. Prettiest knuckleball FG I ever saw.
  9. The best my old GC math can add up are two decent streaks. 1969-1971 27 game streak and from 73-75 a 30 game streak. The record from 69-75 was 73-5. GC is also 81-16 (3-7 in '98) since the end of '95, with 58-6 since 1999 (4 losses in the state semi-finals since '99)
  10. If Bath Co. is not fast they will be in for a shock! I was when GC played against J.I. Burton. They jumped on us quick it was 21-18 with 5:00 to go in the half. They run a lot of sweeps and quick hitters. They can throw also. The defense is small, but they can close the hole quick. The backs (O and D) are very quick. GC had way too much size, and are not too slow either, and scored 35 in the third quarter. i would like to see that game too. I wish the VH$L would hold all the Finals(A and AA)at the same venue.
  11. That's a pretty harsh word you're throwing around there, CHOKE! I don't think you could call 21-20 in Overtime loss in the snow on their home field a choke. GW was a lot better team than we had played all year. GC starting slow in playoff games has been their "achilles heel" for the last 15 years. By the time you get to this point (semi-finals) you can't spot teams 14 points and expect to win. You would expect the teams to be better. I as a GC fan I feel like we would beaten GW 8 out of 10 times(that's not a knock on GW), but it doesn't matter they only had to win one. Excellence is something that is hard to achieve, so is sustained excellence. I think the record over the last 10, 20, 30 or so years speak for itself. This year GC was so much better (so far) talent-wise and execution-wise than anyone we've played. Does that mean they can drill a good Radford team? I doubt it. I do like our chances, and I hope the weather is great. Remember the "best" or most talented team does not always win. I still don't know how we beat Magna Vista in 1997. They were so much more "talented" than GC, but the devils had heart (and Jake) and a little luck. Just be a little easy, or don't be so happy to use the "C" word. I think the kids deserve better. The effort was there in each game 13 over the last 7 out of 8 years.
  12. These are the kind of topics I love to see. I would love for GC to play Bluefield and Graham. When the schedules were being put together for this year, all the talk was about nobody playing down. (like Graham's policy of not playing any A teams) That would have killed GC's non-LPD schedule. I heard that we were looking at playing Austin-East in Knoxville (perinial AA Tennessee power), Cloudland, and Breathitt Co. among others. I would rather get beat in a close game with an Austin East or Bluefield than beat Lee 61-0. That does nothing for your team. I miss the old GC vs. Graham rivalry so bad. I may not get the chance to see Bradshaw play (with the exception of the videos) and it is absolutely killing me. I had a chance to see Graham and Greenville last year and did not go. I regret that decision, as it sounded like a great game. A lot of these posts are speculation and opinion, which makes it so great. Last year I would have loved to play William Campbell. Everyone raved about how bad they beat Appy. Peerman was scoring TD's in the final minute. Coach Colobro WILL NOT run the score up on anyone. I approached him once 15 years ago and asked him why not (pay attention to this answer) he said "I may hate that coach, or coordinator across the field, but you embarrass the kids and their families. And those kids gave everything out there tonight and I wouldn't hurt them for anything, they are just kids playing football." That's good enough for me.
  13. I guess what i'm trying to figure out is, do you really believe that the enrollment at Appalachia and all of the other schools you've mentioned has not dropped significantly over the last twenty years? I have a nephew that is a senior at GC and I looked at the annual from last year, and unless we are hiding them somewhere, or they are all picture shy, my count comes pretty close to the count on the vhsl website. I am not the worlds greatest at math, but I counted twice. I believe that the state government will cut wherever they can, but there is not a big conspiracy going on. "never argue with an idiot. He will lower you to his level, and then beat you with his experience!"
  14. Please folks! It is no use! PVhas8 is right. There's no need to deny it anymore. It is a conspiracy. When they got that 8th title we had a meeting over in the Highlands district and decided that someone had to move down to A. The most logical choice was Virginia High, because they had the closest numbers enrollment wise. They could also funnel several thousand of their enrollment to Tennessee High and nobody would ever guess since THS already had 22,000 enrolled there. The problem was they hadn't had a lot of success lately in AA football. GC then was the next best choice geographically and the fact that we had struggled so much in AA, the last state title was way back in 1997. Good lord there's hardly anyone left alive from those "glory days". What would we do with the 2500 or so excess students so we could meet A enrollment? We decided to holdback about 1,000 in 7th and 8th grade. That's where the nucleus of the 2002-03 teams came from. We then built an underground 6-lane hwy from GC to Kingsport. Johnson City and Bristol. Clever wasn't it. So with all those excess GC atheletes DB is 11-1, Science Hill made the playoffs as did Tennessee High. Virginia High will get a better "shipment" if you will, next year and hopefully we can get them into the playoffs. All of this so we could keep Powell Valley out of the Championship hunt. We did siphon several good players out of Appalachia which is why their numbers are so low now, but that's a story best left for another day.
