I think theres a couple of schools who will present Tazewell a lot of challenge. Central and GC are very deep at the plate. I think GCs pitching is a little better but not always consistent.
Central and Gate City are good teams, but they're not on Tazewell's level.
Compton struck out 19 (by my count) and had an inside the park home run to help the lady Dawgs beat the G-Girls. I do believe that Compton also set the school record for strikeouts in a season today, which was around 154 (not positive about that). I think she has over 160 now.
The Bulldogs went 2-2 this past weekend in a tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee against some stellar competition, which included a 5-1 win over highly touted Union County.
I doubt there's anyone in Region D that's going to present a challenge, though crazier things have happened. As in many things, Appomattox appears to present their stiffest test.
To be the man, you’ve gotta beat the man. Graham is the man on the block until someone knocks the G-Men off. They return a healthy compliment of players, both in terms of size and speed, from last year’s team. The questions there: (1) Can Meadows the Younger succeed at the QB position and (2) Can Graham find someone to compliment Clements in the backfield? Graham improves throughout the season like few others. However, Graham does tend to play a little haggard early on. Beware Week 2.
The 2nd/3rd spots may well be decided in Week 1 when Virginia High visits Tazewell. There’s tons of speed all over the field. Poku and Thomas the Younger. Harris and McDonald. Line play will be the question.
I’ve got Richlands slotted 4th. However, Richlands does have the best kicker in the SWD by far in Isaiah Bandy. That’ll keep them in games and make them a viable threat as they seek to replace some key pieces at QB and along the lines.
Marion looks like 5th for now. There is some talent coming up, and a new coaching staff should change the culture there. I think the dividends are a couple years off, though.
A couple Tazewell players to watch:
(1) Cassius Harris. He’s well within striking distance of the all-time VHSL reception record (84 away). Given that he set the all-time single season record last year, presuming he stays healthy, expect that to fall.
(2) Carter Creasy. In my mind, the best QB in Region 2D right now. He was 13 yards shy of 3000 in his freshman season, and that’s also a pace that would obliterate the VHSL all-time passing record. With the talent he has returning, he may make an assault on the single season record also, presuming he stays healthy.
The quality of pitching in SWVa is pretty impressive.
The quality of softball period in SWVA is impressive. If someone could block off Radford westward, you could field a highly competitive D1 team from this area alone.
Unfortunately Bourbon County and Keyser have much better facilities than Colonial Heights. But it is what it is. Is there a reason why Tazewell did not try to enforce the contract? I think I know the answer but I could be wrong.
I’m in the dark as to why Tazewell didn’t push that harder. I do know that last year’s game produced some bad blood on both sides, and that may have had something to do with it.
I give the dogs the edge against Marion, John Battle, Grundy, Richlands, Fort Chiswell
Toss up with Colonial Heights and Virginia High
I give the edge to Graham. Riverheads and Bluefield.
5-5 at worst.
My way too early prediction is a very solid 7-3 with a couple of quality wins.
That’s a perfectly fair estimation. I’m much more bullish on Tazewell’s chances with Colonial Heights. That team lost a bunch of talent from a squad that went just 4-6 last season. And that’s a banner year for them historically. Despite being open since 1958, they have only made the playoffs 5 times (including the modern area where it’s pretty difficult to miss it), and are 0-5 once they get there.
I would think it would be nearly impossible to find a one year deal. I blame Mt. View.
Precisely. It’s a one-off, nothing more. The only 3 teams within 6 hours that had any opening AND were willing to play Tazewell were Keyser, WV; Colonial Heights, VA; and Bourbon County, KY.
Do you all predict Tazewell to go 5-5 or less next season?
Anything worse than 5-5 would be incredibly disappointing. That should be the floor. Of course, with the teams Tazewell plays, the team could be markedly, substantially improved and go just 7-3.
When is Tazewell going to get a synth turf field? They have always played second fiddle to Graham and Richlands.
There’s no rush in that department. There are several pluses to natural turf, especially in terms of joint injuries. But I anticipate it will happen sooner rather than later.
Sports Complex coming to Tazewell.
