  1. [ QUOTE ] Virginia Tech Sept. 8- lost to No. 2, LSU October 25- lost to No. 2, BC LSU October 13- lost to No. 17 Kentucky November 23- lost to UNRANKED Arkansas Check-mate. LSU was upset twice. Tech lost to two teams ranked higher than them. LSU has had two chances to hold their spot as a championship contender and didn't do it. You can't just discredit two upset losses because they seem like they are a pretty good team. It is completely subjective that they are even thought about as a national contender right now. End of story. It's funny that we are now combining a subjective aspect to picking who is going to be in the national championship. I agree. LSU has looked pretty good at times this year. But to put them in the nc just because they have looked pretty good and not take into account who they lost to? Simply wrong. So how about we just go with a completely subjective pick. There are no better teams than USC and LSU, right? So then why doesn't USC get a shot at the national title? They lost to Stanford. That's it. So while I sit here and think about this more, I can only wonder why objectivity doesn't apply to LSU. That's just me though. Obviously. [/ QUOTE ] No, far from check-mate. Your argument for Virginia Tech being placed ahead of LSU, although technically valid, is incredibly weak, given the great disparity in the head-to-head matchup (which, by the way, would be a tiebreaker for a playoff spot in the NFL...hmmm). Other similar and equally weak arguments could be made for LSU, too: the Tigers didn't lose in regulation, both losses came in triple-overtime, the SEC is the toughest conference in college football, etc. In short, the teams have similar resumes. Again, LSU won a HEAD-TO-HEAD battle against Virginia Tech. If Ohio State deserves one of the top two spots, and Virginia Tech is not as deserving than LSU (as I've shown in laborious detail), then Virginia Tech doesn't deserve the other of the top two spots. However, that's not to say LSU deserves one of the top two spots. It just shows that LSU is more deserving than Virginia Tech, and therefore there is another team more deserving than the Hokies. These debates are just reason #157087230 that college football desperately needs a playoff system.
  2. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Kansas fans must travel better then Mizzou fans. [/ QUOTE ] How do they know that? Kansas has never been anywhere that they've had to travel... [/ QUOTE ] I have no idea how they determined that Kansas is a better draw then Mizzou. The fan base that follows the basketball team must be good and they made the pick thinking the fan base would travel for the football team. Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk makes no sense to me for the Orange Bowl. Better get the buffets ready for Mangino!! "I've ate a baby!" [/ QUOTE ] Mangino vs. the Buffet Buddies (Roth & Burnop)...better than the "Thilla in Manilla"... [/ QUOTE ] Imagine a scenario in which Maryland played Kansas in a bowl game. That would be the most heft in two opponents since Tugboat and Earthquake brawled in the WWF in the early 90s.
  3. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] how can you refuse to watch it if lsu is in it... they won the sec why shouldn't they be in it? [/ QUOTE ] because if Missouri doesnt deserve a BCS bowl game because they lost ONE game at the number one spot to a VERY good Oklahoma team then LSU DEFINITELY DOES NOT DESERVE IT WITH TWO LOSSES AT NUMBER ONE!!! its as simple as that...they lost to Kentucky who came on strong at first and then died down and then they lost to an Arkansas team whos only big time threat is McFadden...i dont see how they are in over Oklahoma and a very good Tech team..yes they beat VT blah blah blah...but after that loss...VT NEVER gave up 21 points...so after that loss VT pulled it together...but LSU lost in 3 OT's of both games...that doesnt matter...an L is an L...and an L at the number one spot is huge...so they should have NO shot at the NC in my opinion... [/ QUOTE ] Thanks Beano. Finally, someone seconding the points that I've been trying to make. As I've said before, Arkansas was UNRANKED when LSU lost to them. [/ QUOTE ] Let's see here. The only other teams in this great nation outside Ohio State that have one loss are Kansas and Hawaii. That's it. Does anyone here think one of those two teams deserves a national title shot under the current system? I don't. The discussion then has to flow to two-loss teams, for which I have a neat analysis below describing a recent debate. Virginia Tech: 2007 ACC Champions LSU: 2007 SEC Champions Virginia Tech: 10-2 LSU: 10-2 September 8th, 2007 LSU: 48 Virginia Tech: 7 Check-mate.
  4. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] OU in a blowout...they have a great defense and a very good rushing and passing attack...their defense will slow down Slaton and White and completely dominate the game...im saying OU 45-13 [/ QUOTE ] No way. WVU will be able to find their rhythm early and put it to OU like they did Georgia a couple years ago. I'd look for WVU taking this one with a score of about 34-28. [/ QUOTE ] I frankly don't know whether West Virginia can recover from the aftershock of the Pittsburgh game. Oklahoma is playing as well as anyone in college football. Case and point is Sunday night: they beat a one-loss (at the time) Missouri team by 21 points after pulling away in the second half. Likewise, West Virginia has been quite unpredictable this season: score 66 against Connecticut, lose 13-9 against Pittsburgh. It all depends on which West Virginia team shows up. I don't think the Mountaineers have enough. Oklahoma-33 West Virginia-19
  5. Likely very little, if any. Brandon Jacobs will be back from his hamstring injury, and he'll probably get 20-25 touches. Likewise, E. Manning will probably throw 35-40 times in the game to compensate for Jacobs' return.
  6. Could definitely see that. I'm going to go a little lower with mine. Tech seems to pull away from teams in the 4th quarter, and thus, I have them winning by two scores. Virginia Tech-34 Kansas-21
  7. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] It'll be EXTREMELY close. I think LSU will edge out Tech my only the slimmest margin. Virginia Tech will be #1 in the computers but the voters will keep them out of the national championship. [/ QUOTE ] That would be the right thing to do...LSU beat Va. Tech by 40. LSU played one of the toughest schedules in the nation. LSU lost 2 games, both in triple overtime. LSU deserves to be in the BCS Championship game. [/ QUOTE ] LSU lost to two teams that were ranked lower than them, one of which being an unranked team. VT deserves a shot at the national title. [/ QUOTE ] Very weak argument, my friend. Here's a few reasons why: 1. LSU pounded Virginia Tech by 41 points. 2. LSU is the SEC champion, which we have freely admitted is the toughest conference in the nation. Virginia Tech is the winner of the ACC, which we all can agree is the 5th-best of the BCS conferences at the moment. 3. LSU pounded Virginia Tech by 41 points. 4. LSU has not lost a game in regulation this year. In fact, both losses were in triple overtime. Virginia Tech has lost in regulation twice. 5. LSU pounded Virginia Tech by 41 points. [/ QUOTE ] While I agree that V.Tech should not be in the NC game, and that LSU should. I do not agree with a couple of your points (#2 and #4.) 2. LSU is the SEC champion, which we have freely admitted is the toughest conference in the nation. Virginia Tech is the winner of the ACC, which we all can agree is the 5th-best of the BCS conferences at the moment. I think VT is in a close group with the Big 12 and the Big 10. Niether of those conferences are really that strong, and I tihnk they both compare well with the ACC. But I do agree that the SEC os the best conference. So that point is still valid. 4. LSU has not lost a game in regulation this year. In fact, both losses were in triple overtime. Virginia Tech has lost in regulation twice. This point is weak. Who cares how they lost? They lost in overtime to an unranked team and a 17th ranked team...they should have never been in overtime with Arkansas to begin with. The reason they play overtime is to determine a winner, you get the same L for a lose in OT as you do for lose in regulation. If the fashion of a lose count...well tech dominated the game with BC for 58 minutes, so shouldnt they get some bonus points for that? Again, I am happy with the bowl selections. I do think that LSU should be in the NC game, and Tech shold be in the Orange Bowl... Im not sold on OSU though. [/ QUOTE ] I know arguments #2 and #4 are fairly weak, but it makes more sense as the justification for other teams that aren't in the BCS title game.
  8. Because the human voters knew that if Virginia Tech was placed third (where they probably should have been), the computer rankings would have knocked LSU out, since Virginia Tech was ahead by the computers. If Virginia Tech was third in the human polls, they would have been second in the final BCS ranking; the nation would have been up-in-arms, given how badly LSU destroyed the Hokies. In the end, it's the "right" result, even if the method was extremely questionable. That's why a playoff is needed.
  9. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] It'll be EXTREMELY close. I think LSU will edge out Tech my only the slimmest margin. Virginia Tech will be #1 in the computers but the voters will keep them out of the national championship. [/ QUOTE ] That would be the right thing to do...LSU beat Va. Tech by 40. 10. I think Virginia Tech will win, yes, but it won't be "BIG". Frankly, I think the score will closely mirror the Virginia Tech-Virginia game, something in the neighborhood of 34-21. I'd give more analysis now, but I'm swamped.
  11. The human voters knew what they were doing by jacking LSU up to #2 in the polls, while Virginia Tech's conference title win was more impressive that LSU's was over Tennessee. If Virginia Tech was placed third in both human polls, the result would have been an Ohio State-Virginia Tech championship game, and the nation would have crapped a collective brick that LSU wasn't in it despite beating Virginia Tech by 41. It wasn't a coincidence that the voters put LSU second and Virginia Tech fifth. They knew...
  12. You also could have won if the referrees had called a couple more phantom penalties in addition to the half-dozen they called against Pittsburgh/did not call against West Virginia all night long.
  13. It's almost a given now that Virginia Tech is three spots behind Louisiana State in the human polls. Frankly, that's just too much ground to give up when the BCS computer polls are so close. Louisiana State, barring a massive upset, is second.
  14. It likely will. Louisiana State is first or second in most of the major BCS computers, and the Tigers are ranked second in both human polls. I think it's almost a given at this point: Ohio State-Louisiana State for the national title.
  15. And, barring an incredible suprise, this is exactly what will happen. West Virginia-Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Book it!
  16. A West Virginia fan talking about how Virginia Tech chokes in bowl games? That has to be ridiculously high on the list of the pot calling the kettle black! Lest West Virginia fans forget, the Mountaineers are still 3-8 in their last 11 bowl games, even with winning the last two. Virginia Tech's performance in bowls has been less than stellar, yes, but don't criticize when your team is equally as guilty of the same fault.
  17. There you go. People seem to neglect the fact that computers play a decent part in the rankings. With the Colley Matrix, Virginia Tech is ranked second, and that poll has been traditionally unkind to the Hokies this year. Again, I personally believe the Hokies should not go to the national title game over a one-loss Ohio State team and a two-loss Louisiana State team that thrashed the Hokies in September. However, as good as Virginia Tech is in the computers, anything's possible.
  18. Bingo. The original post is flawed, since Southern California lost to a Stanford team that is as bad as Pittsburgh. No one's clamoring to strip their BCS game. All the commotion here is because West Virginia blew their national title contention in the final weekend of the regular season, instead of mid-season like Stanford.
  19. Great Jefferson quote, by the way. It would be foolish to say that the Hoos didn't have luck. Swank missing the field goal, the referrees reviewing the field goal that technically wasn't reviewable in Chapel Hill, etc. This is the first year Virginia's really had some luck come their way. Let's put Virginia aside. Tonight's a night of celebration!
  20. [ QUOTE ] if tennessee wasnt the luckiest team in the country along with UVA, UGA would have been in a showdown with LSU, and they would have won. heck Tennessee should have won today. LSU is overhyped. they have struggles the whole second half of the season. Ole miss was hanging with them for a long time. [/ QUOTE ] Now, no need for the Virginia bashing. A team gives itself the opportunity for good fortune to follow it, and for once in Virginia's 118-year history, Virginia got some breaks. Enough of that. It would be a pity if Erik Ainge, of all people, killed Virginia Tech's national title prayers. Put in the second-string quarterback halfway through the 4th quarter, and the Volunteers win today. It was that bad.
  21. Speaking of pitiful, 4-8 Washington... The Huskies are rolling Hawaii right now, 21-0!!! Still in the FIRST, though.
  22. But you can be a computer nerd yourself! http://www.colleyrankings.com/playgod.html Put in the results from the top games today. What you see may surprise you...
