(AP)  Matewan's Paul McCoy rushed for a state-record 658 yards and scored 10 touchdowns in a 64-0 win over rival Burch. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior's performance Friday came one day after the Secondary School Activities Commission ordered Matewan to forfeit its first two wins of the season on an eligibility issue. The National Federation of State High School Associations lists the national record of 619 yards held by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, Calif., in 1995. However, Doug Huff of Wheeling, a national high school records historian and secretary-treasurer of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association, said John Giannantonio of Netcong, N.J., rushed for 739 yards in a game against Mountain Lakes, N.J., in 1950. "The National Federation book for some reason does not include that, and I think the reason is there's a formal process for submitting those things. This school doesn't exist anymore," Huff said Saturday. "The papers recognized it. The school had a special ceremony. It's been in my records for years." In August, it was reported that McCoy rushed for 537 yards against Shelby Valley, Ky. But Huff reviewed media accounts and a videotape of the game and determined that McCoy actually had 440 yards. Until Friday night, that temporarily left intact the state record of 460 yards set by Gilmer County's Jacob Lilly against Tygarts Valley in 2002. Matewan coach Yogi Kinder defended his decision to keep McCoy in Friday's game. "Why should there be any guilty feelings?" Kinder said. "Our school's smaller than they are. Why should I punish my kids for having a pretty good team? We were going to score 60 points if Paul doesn't even get on the bus." McCoy's effort came one day after Matewan appealed an SSAC ruling that had taken away three of the team's four previous wins. On Thursday, the SSAC reduced the number of forfeited games to two and restored linebacker Garrett Epling's eligibility. Matewan (3-2) plans to further appeal because the forfeits could jeopardize its playoff chances. McCoy made his own statement about the controversy. McCoy, who had 29 carries, ran for 477 yards alone on his touchdown runs, which covered 69, 1, 53, 56, 52, 20, 31, 84, 87 and 25 yards. He had a 77-yard TD run called back by penalty. His 10 touchdowns would tie him with two others for the second-most ever nationally. The record is 12 set by Ken Pearson of Hugo, Colo., in 1930. McCoy has 1,723 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns this season. He's averaging 345 yards per game, which is on pace to break the state 10-game record of 2,744 yards set last year by Nitro's Josh Culbertson. Kinder, who also teaches driver's education at Burch, said he'll have no problem going back to work. "I show up every Monday after we beat them," he said.
  5. Here's an online petition concerning the issue... Petition to remove Gregory There were some posts on Va preps early about it, but seem to have since dissapeared. One of them said some things had happened off the field too I believe. Who knows? lol.
  6. http://www.tricities.com/tristate/tri/news.apx.-content-articles-TRI-2006-09-19-0011.html The head football coach at Abingdon High School was suspended Monday following incidents at Friday night’s game against Richlands. The Washington County School Board met Monday night, but did not discuss the suspension of Coach Ray Gregory in open session. But according to several people who spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, Gregory yelled at members of the team. Half a dozen spoke in support of Gregory. Two spoke against the coach and assured the board that more would have been present to oppose him if they’d known so many would support him. Gregory’s wife, Christine, said her husband is “intense, but he wants to see those kids succeed. He yells at them because he cares. Football is a contact sport. You’ve got to be intense if you’re going to step on the field.†Andrea Armstead, whose brother plays on the team, felt differently. “It was not just cussing and swearing at the football team,†she said. “It was Coach Gregory’s actions on and off the field that we felt were unacceptable.†The School Board met in closed session, but took no action regarding Gregory. When asked how long the suspension would last, Superintendent Alan Lee declined comment. In other news, the board voted – again – to delay taking a stance on a beer application by Super-Size-Sports, which plans to serve beer at the Abingdon Cinemall. The movie complex is near Abingdon High. Board members again asked Superintendent Alan Lee to gather more information. dmccown@bristolnews.com | (276) 791-0701

Games start at 4 p.m. in Bristol with the Lee/Abingdon game first. [/ QUOTE ] I've heard Dan River is pretty good, will either Abingdon or Lee have much of a chance againist them? [/ QUOTE ] Well, I hope so..lol. Is Casey Pyron their pitcher again this year? I was thinking she's really good. If Lee plays really well and the way they are capable of, then I think they do. Lee's faced them before recently. Back in '03 and '04, played them to extra innings and lost the first one, then got beat pretty bad the second time. I don't know anything about Dan River though this season other than that they are supposed to be pretty good too like you said. Think they've only lost 2 games this season. By the way, Lee beat Abingdon today 4-1. Don't know anything about the other game. I heard it on the news and they said the other game was just getting underway, at that time(which was about 6:30). The finals were to be played after it was over.

  17. The victims names were released. Blast Kills 5 in Kentucky
  18. May 20, 2006 11:54 AM EDT HOLMES MILL, Ky. - An explosion in an eastern Kentucky coal mine killed five miners while one other miner was able to get out alive, Gov. Ernie Fletcher said Saturday. The blast at the Darby Mine No. 1 in Harlan County occurred between midnight and 1 a.m. EDT while a maintenance shift was on duty, said Amy Louviere, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. "We don't know the details of the cause," Fletcher told The Associated Press. The five dead miners were found by rescue workers, the governor said. The rescue teams initially found three dead workers and later found two more, he said. Names of the victims were not immediately released. The survivor, who was not identified, was taken to Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va., where he was treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Amy Stevens said. It was not clear how many workers were on duty when the blast occurred, but Louviere said no production was going on at the time. Harlan County Judge-Executive Joe Grieshop said the accident "shakes up our county because coal mining is a way of life for our people." The underground mine, operated by Kentucky Darby LLC, is located about 250 miles southeast of Louisville in a mountainous area near the Virginia border. A man who answered the phone at a Kentucky Darby office declined to comment Saturday, saying the company was too busy. "We can't release any information right now," he said before hanging up. Relatives of the miners gathered before dawn at the Cloverfork Missionary Baptist Church near the mine to await word about their loved ones. State and federal mine officials informed the family members of the deaths, said Mike Blair, the church's pastor. "There's just a lot of heartbroken people," he said. Local magistrate Chad Brock said the deaths would touch many lives. "There's not going to be a family that's not affected in some way," he said. "You either know them or you're kin to them."

  20. http://www.timesnews.net/sportsArticle.dna?_StoryID=3627494 Thursday, April 27, 2006 By GEORGE THWAITES Times-News APPALACHIA - During his storied career as football coach at Appalachia High School, Tom Turner always liked to have the element of surprise on his side. That was an advantage he maintained to the very end. The 54-year-old Turner, who retired this past March due to a combination of health issues, died in his sleep early Wednesday morning of undetermined causes. He was discovered by family members about 6 a.m. "He was pretty sick. He liked to hide injuries and pain so nobody would feel sorry for him," said son Travis Turner. "He wouldn't really tell me how badly he was feeling. Everybody in this community thought he was invincible, like he was Superman." The news of Turner's death stunned his longtime coaching colleagues in Southwest Virginia. They didn't see it coming. "Everybody's just heartbroken about this," Powell Valley coach Phil Robbins said. "I think Tom's toughness had hidden from all of us who knew him exactly how bad he was hurting and how sick he really was." Turner coached in multiple Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Games after winning his first state title in 1989. He was known and liked by coaches in all classifications from all corners of the state. "This is a great loss for all of us," said Mike Smith, executive director of the VHSCA. "This is going to have impact all around the state. All the football coaches know Tom and have a lot of respect for him." The epicenter of grief was Appalachia High School, where Turner coached the Bulldogs to five Group A state football championships. Appalachia Principal George Barton met with the faculty at 7:30 a.m. and put the school's crisis plan into effect. The student body was informed of Turner's death at 8:30 a.m. "Central office personnel sent grief counselors down here ... pastors from the community," Barton said. "It's a big loss for us over here. We're all hurting. The community is in shock." Barton and assistant coaches Roger Austin and Bobby Sanders assembled the Appalachia football players at 9:45 a.m. "I felt like they needed some time together to reflect and release some of their emotions," Barton said. "That was a good time for them. Plus, it was a good time for me. Tom was more than a co-worker. He was my buddy." Turner was inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame this past October alongside Gate City coach Nick Colobro. Over 26 years at Appalachia, Turner compiled a 205-107-1 record running one of Virginia's smallest Group A programs. He led the Bulldogs to Group A, Division 1 state titles in 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1997. Under his tutelage, Appalachia garnered 11 Region D championships and three state runner-up finishes. This past fall, Turner led the Bulldogs to an 8-4 finish that ended with a Region D title game loss to eventual state runner-up J.I. Burton. In addition to being Appalachia's winningest coach, Turner was also one of the school's all-time best athletes. He played on Appalachia's 1971 Group A state championship football team under Jim Riggs and on the Bulldogs' 1972 Group A state championship basketball team under Gary Holloman. Turner went on to play at Virginia Tech as a linebacker and defensive lineman. Some of the cumulative health problems that led to his early retirement originated as injuries he received during his career as an athlete. "He had back and neck pains and knee pains, arthritis and other problems with his joints and ligaments," the younger Turner said. "I guess it all just finally caught up." To accommodate the large turnout expected for Turner's funeral, services will be held Saturday at the Appalachia High School gymnasium. The viewing will be held from 4 until 7 p.m., with the memorial service beginning at 7 p.m. The burial will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap.
