  1. I was just curious what the football schedule would look like, sounds like they are still lookin for a couple more teams. As for the wrestling, Grundy will be Dictrict champs by default. They will then wrestle in a "sub-regional" with the LPD and CMD. The lonsome pine and Clinch mountain already do this to Seed for the region tournament. Then they wrestle the region and the State. The committment of the Grundy Wrestling Club will not change. The wrestlers will continue to to travel all over the state and country to find the best opportunities we can find. They will be exposed to college coaches, quality wrestling , and life outside of Buchanan County. I did not want this to turn into a wrestling thread, so lets keep with the Football.

  4. How did it go? I didn't get to go I was wonderin what I missed. Who are the starters, who showed promise, who are the top young kids? Just wishin I coulda got my football fix!
  5. I think that Grundy will have a good season this year. They have a very experienced team. They have a big senior class with a lot of holdbacks. I have heard rumor of the single wing idk. However I think they will put together a good showing for the last year in the SWD! The Kelly to Rife/Justus/Rife/Justus is as good as any. Bergelowe has gotten bigger and the run looks stronger than last year. The Defense Compton puts out is always tough. Minus a few big plays last year could have been huge. It was still a really good year though. I look for a better season this season. I can't wait to see what we got!
  6. Thank you to all the participants and workers. We appreciate the travel and inconvienience you guys went through to make our tournament a success. Thanks to everyone who helped !

  14. I want to say good luck to everyone who qualified for state. I also want to say that while Dotson is located in a better position for state, he had a shoulder injury and the trainer recommended he wait and go next week. It was not the coaches call.

  19. Got this from Bristol Herald Courier Grundy Dominates Southwest District Wrestling Tournament BY LLOYD COMBS Sports Correspondent Published: February 5, 2010 » 0 Comments | Post a Comment vote nowBuzz up!GRUNDY, Va. – Grundy wrestling has been rejuvenated with a youth movement the last couple of years. The only two seniors in the lineup, however, were in the spotlight for the Golden Wave Thursday night. Senior Ethan Owens won his fourth Southwest District title in four years, while another Wave senior, Jon Dotson, won his second crown for Grundy. The Golden Wave had 10 individual champs in all in winning its 27th straight SWD tournament Thursday at Riverview Elementary-Middle School. Owens (145 pounds) and Dotson (135) shared co-Outstanding Wrestler honors for the Golden Wave, which nearly doubled up on second-place Richlands, 286-146, in team points. Freshman Austin Compton gave Grundy its first winner, with a pin of Aaron Haywood of Richlands at the 3:11 mark at 103 pounds. Sean Vandyke (112), Jeremy Hurley (119), Dakota Vance (130), Cody Rife (145), Tyler McClanahan (160), Tanner McClanahan (171) and Daniel Lowe (215) added SWD titles for the Wave. Tazewell had two individual champions among its three finalists. Cody Wilson won the 125-pound crown, taking a 7-2 decision from Grundy freshman Justin Street. Aaron McReynolds won by fall, in 1:01, over Carroll County’s Nicholas Tober, at 152 pounds. Richlands heavyweight Zach McClanahan won his first SWD title, with a 6-2 decision over Marion’s Brent Myers. Nick Groseclose of Marion took the 189-pound championship with a 10-0 major decision over Grundy’s Jake McCowan. The most exciting match of the finals may have been Jon Dotson’s dramatic comeback win over a two-time Region IV champ, Luke Allison of Tazewell. Allison held a 4-3 lead entering the final minute of the third period when Dotson threw him to the mat and pinned him at the 5:11 mark. “That was the match of the night,†Grundy coach Travis Fiser said. “Jon-Dot stepped up and wrestled like it was his last year, and he beat a very good wrestler.†Ethan Owens joined an elite list of four-time SWD champs and dominated the 140-pound weight class in doing it. He won a 15-0 tech fall over Abingdon’s Grayson Tobler. Owens said he never looks ahead, even when he’s favored, even on a team that dominates its district, and a program that won 15 state titles from 1978-2001. Grundy appears to have its best shot in years at dethroning eight-time defending Group AA champ Christiansburg, in next weekend’s Region IV meet and at state. “I’m just thrilled to be a part of this program,†said Owens, who reached the state finals as a sophomore, but was injured in the semifinals a year ago. “I just take it one match at a time at this point of the year. You can’t take anyone for granted.†Sean Vandyke and Jeremy Hurley earned their third SWD crowns by fall. Four other Grundy wrestlers won their second Southwest District titles. Dakota Vance and Cody Rife pinned their opponents in the finals. Tyler McClanahan and his brother Tanner both won their second district championships by tech fall. Daniel Lowe pinned Carroll County’s Mike Quesenberry at 215 pounds to win his first district crown. Zach McClanahan followed in his father Mike’s footsteps in winning a Southwest District title. The younger McClanahan is a natural 215-pounder, and was out to outlast his bigger opponent. “I wanted to try and wear him down and get through the third period,†McClanahan said. “I was ready to go to overtime, I just popped him and got a takedown at the end.†Myers had defeated McClanahan twice earlier this season. “Zach is a super kid,†Richlands coach Frank Daugherty said. “He finished third at 215 last year, and he was going to wrestle there again, but we had another 215-pounder, but we didn’t have a heavyweight, so he did it for the team. “Myers beat us by one point two other times. I just told Zach, we lost the battles, now it’s time to win the war, and he did. I’m really happy for him.†The top four place-winners in each weight class move on to the Region IV tournament Feb. 12 and 13 at Christiansburg.
  20. I never said dropping is the only change that can be made. I do think it is the only logical thing to do and to say that a team that is as small as Grundy or Graham needs to compete in a higher division to provide fans "a higher level of play" is rediculous. Nobody said hey, we will go single A and the VHSL will crown us state champs in every sport. They are saying that the years of being the smallest, set up against nearly unstoppable obsticles are coming to an end. Work hard get better and win at the single A level. Do you think that everyone is trying to get beat? As for getting beat by Giles in the region finals 55-0, it would beat the heck out of winning vs single A level and then having to compete against teams twice your size. Do I think that "fans" would fall for it? Sure I do. They fell for it this year. There was so many people at the first SWD game that I didn't get to eat concessions. Americans all love a winner and they do not tolerate a loser. Americans love to win all the time. I think this is a way to give everyone a better chance to succeed in their given sport. And Lance, nobody said they can't work on developing their programs further.
  21. I do not think that a drop alone will make everyone a state powerhouse. I am saying every team will do better than they currently are. Does is make Football a state champ, no, but it does give them a chance to win the district instead of winning a district game. The problem is some lunatics think that to win 1 SWD game is "better" than winning the district in single A. Power points may agree, but I bet the team would rather have some wins. Lets remember what this is. Kids extracurricular activities. Do you want them to have good memories or bad? Being on a winning team with a winning record with some post season aspirations would be a dream for many of the kids. It really set in on me of all places in Iowa. The wrestlers meet other athletes who say, I bet your good at football too. The next thing out is no we have only won 1 district game in 5 years. Much like I said last summer, give them some games to win, schedule a winning record, and give them a chance for some local success. You get fans out. This year looked like old Grundy games till we got to SWD play. Then the bottom dropped out. That is what happens. I am glad that we are supposed to go single A. I think it will only help an area with a dwindling population. I also will invite any of the other SWD teams that would like to drop to follow the same course we did and in another decade or so come on down too! Ha! Ha!
  22. I do not want to turn this into a yes we should, no we shouldn't arguement. However, to thnk that the only problem is " they don't work as hard as we did when Dinosaurs roamed the Earth" is not an accurate discription of the problem. Everybody has heard the "older" generation say "when we was young we walked to school uphill both ways". The reality is you can't walk up hill both ways. However, with your logic you can take any team and win any division, I can tell you you can't. Teams with "programs" will do better than teams without programs. Larger Schools have advantages over smaller schools. As for who this helps, I say everyone. Football- Beat Haysi who was in Region finals, if Grundy equals their performance this years team would of been one of the top 8 best Grundy Football teams ever. Instead they can hang their hat on a SWD win. Basketball- Have already swept Twin Valley. Wrestling- The team we have would set state scoring records for single A this year. Cross Country- One of the top Single A schools in the state. I do not see the "not gonna change anything" defence. This is why I personally have pushed for the Drop since the Principal changed. Math is simple 450< 800-2000.
  23. The Grundy Wrestling club will webcast the event live on their website. Goto http://www.grundygoldenwavewrestling.com and look under the audio/video heading and click play on the screen. We will get the site updated after season. Please pardon our construction! Starts at 5pm Friday.
  24. Grundy is working on a website that will have live video of the matches. This is a site that is under construction. The video is working and the rest of the site will be updated soon.
  25. Here is the deal. 1. No water or power in most of Buchanan County. 2. A lot of Buchanan county residents went to Richlands and stayed in Hotels, booking them full. 3. The club was told they could have the rooms and kick out AEP and stay in the hotel that hadn't had water and was beginning to smell. 4. The decision had to be made by noon tuesday to beat the deadline for the Mountaineer. I love Grundy Wrestling, I would do anything to have the Agie except, put out the Electric company trying to restore power. People are still getting power back. I am not going to be responsible for delaying heat to the elderly.
