  1. Saw in the Charleston paper today while at the barber shop that Bluefield and Nitro aren't scrimmaging. Who are the Beavers scrimmaging and what are some of the other ones in the area?
  2. Looking at the NC opponent, I don't have any doubts that Charlotte Country Day isn't going to be tough, but their high school enrollment is around 400. The 1600 student number is K-12. Also, their 3-A class is in the private school division. Most of those schools are pretty school. A good comparison for CCD is probably Wheeling Central which is no slouch.
  3. Pikeville is not a private school. They compete in Class A, District 7. The program was loaded in the late 80's with a tremendous run of talent. Belfry is now the power in Pike County, but P-ville is still a contender in Class A. As for private schools in Eastern Kentucky, there aren't any that play football. The eastern-most private schools in the KHSAA that play football are Lexington Catholic and Lexington Christian.
  4. It would be impossible to get PHS and JMHS together now with Princeton's committment to the MSAC. They have nine required games in the conference. Bluefield will fill the other spot which leaves Princeton with a full schedule. I wish Princeton didn't join the MSAC. The Kanawha Valley schools just don't bring anyone. I wish Princeton's schedule looked like this: Bluefield Woodrow Wilson Nicholas County G-brier East Richlands James Monroe Blacksburg Carroll County Mount View Parkersburg South (independent that needs games) Nine of the ten games would be within 90 minutes and seven would count as AAA. I know most Princeton fans would rather see them playing JM and other SWVA schools than South Charleston, St. Albans, Capital, Spring Valley, etc.
  5. Late hits don't bring auto first downs. The only fouls in hs football that bring automatic first downs are defensive pass interference, roughing the kicker, and roughing the passer.
  6. Westside at Shady on Saturday 8/12.
  7. What about the touchdown catch in the corner just before the half of the Bluefield-JM regular season game at Mitchell. That was a great grab, but was he inbounds???
  8. This year's schedule is a great example why Princeton screwed up in joining the MSAC. PRINCETON 08/25/06 - OPEN 09/01/06 A BLUEFIELD 09/08/06 A HUNTINGTON 09/15/06 A SOUTH CHARLESTON 09/22/06 H GEORGE WASHINGTON 09/29/06 A NITRO 10/06/06 H LINCOLN COUNTY 10/13/06 H GREENBRIER EAST 10/20/06 A CAPITAL 10/27/06 H SPRING VALLEY 11/03/06 H RIVERSIDE That's not a real attractive schedule from a fan's perspective. I would much rather see some local schools on their schedule. The James Monroe and Mount View series had to put more fans in the bleachers than any of these with the possible exception of G-East or Riverside. Know they needed AAA games, but why not schedule some VA schools that would count as AAA like Richlands, Blacksburg, or Christiansburg? Not to mention that you wouldn't have to pay the round trip $42 tolls on the turnpike per bus!
  9. The officiating was a problem when it was George Simons and that bunch that worked all of the Beaver games. I've been to a couple of big games at Bluefield that past couple years (Martinsburg, James Monroe, Mount View) and the officiating wasn't slanted one way or the other.
  10. Just something for the off-season arguments. Based on tradition, coaching, facilities, talent pool, etc. AAA 1. Morgantown (two straight titles and five title games since '98) 2. Parkersburg (maybe the best AAA tradition and most rabid fan support in the state) 3. Martinsburg (great recent track record, but the 'Dogs may get passed by Jefferson for Eastern Panhandle supremecy) 4. Nitro (Tinsley always produces a great offense at small AAA school) 5. Parkersburg South (Program has shown signs of decline since '03 title) Others considered: University, Bridgeport, Woodrow Wilson, Riverside, Jefferson. AA 1. Bluefield (8 state championships, great stadium, four straight title games) 2. Weir (another great tradition-rich program) 3. Wayne (always a threat, by far the best program in southwestern part of the state) 4. James Monroe (tougher schedule might help achieve more success in the playoffs) 5. Poca (2001-03 titles give the Dots a spot, but they need to make the playoffs next year to keep the position). Others considered: Herbert Hoover, Scott, Magnolia, Tolsia, Mount View. A 1. Wheeling Central (love 'em or hate 'em, there's no argument at this point) 2. Williamstown (Jackets will get their state title someday soon) 3. Parkersburg Catholic (Crusaders are always a contender) 4. South Harrison (another good, solid program) 5. Moorefield (hate to put an 0-10 team on the list, but they did appear in every championship game from '96 to '03. Others considered: Gilbert, Buffalo, Greenbrier West, Matewan, Fayetteville, Tucker County.
  11. WV spots at the 20. Everything else is the same except for the three-OT limit.
  12. Here's the real shocker: Oak Hill 21, Mount View 14.
  13. A lady told me in the Bluewell Kroger that it was 29-7 Montcalm in the third quarter when she left, but haven't heard a final.
  14. It's not a real strong schedule by any means, but I can't imagine an 8-2 team not making the Class A playoffs. Should have just enough points to squeak in. If Montcalm beats Twin Valley and Greater Beckley, I'd figure them for somewhere around a 14 or 15 seed. Could be an ugly playoff game if they draw a Williamstown or Wheeling Central. Still would be an incredible accomplishment for such a small school with little to no tradition in football.
  15. Montcalm 24-20. I'm pretty sure the score is correct, but Montcalm did win.
