The results of regular season games mean nothing once the playoffs begin. My personal belief is that Richlands would have defeated Graham in the regional final had Graham made it that far. Richlands made a lot of positional changes following the loss to Graham.

Preps omitted the names of D.J. Simmons from Richlands, DeShawn Strickland of Magna Vista, and Allen Eccleston of Virginia High. They all made 1st team all-region. You can see the complete all-region team (including both division 3 and division 4 players) in the Dec 19th editions of both the Bluefield and Bristol papers. I am sure all other papers across the state had the complete listings also.

the caliber of competition really wasn't any different from that at the UVA camp. Richlands took a short team (only 11 players) and was missing three starters but still only lost one game and in that game they were on the opposing team's one yard line (down by three) when time ran out. If Richlands had won that game they would have advanced on to the semi-finals.

Richlands defeated Hermitage (AAA) in the semi-finals and Paint Branch High School (AAA in Maryland) in the final to become this year's Al Groh 7 0n 7 shootout champion. There were 35 teams participating in the tournament. Considering the caliber of competition it was an amazing accomplishment. Last year's champion, Friendly High School (from Fort Washington, Maryland) was eliminated by Hermitage in their bracket final. I mention this because one of the teams that Friendly defeated last year was Landstown with Percy Harvin.

Null was the winning pitcher with 14 K's. Wills Murray was the losing pitcher for Graham.
