  1. Im not really framiliar w/ the roads of Scott Co(I know 72 and 23) but why not build a school in Fort Blackmore for TS/RC and just leave GC alone? Would that not work? I know its not balanced and equal county wide but that seems like an obvious solution If Dickenson Co can consolidate into 1 school I know rural(?) Scott Co can
  2. Never thought I would see that, Scott Co close GC. Wouldnt 2 schools make more sense though? A school system that size could easily support 2 schools. Not to mention the whole athletics issue, SCHS would be AA and most of the AA schools will be droping to A in the next 2-4 years. That would leave SCHS and Abingdon as the only 2 AA schools in far SWVA, thats a problem. But like you said thats not even on the table as of right now and alot is probably gonna change before that time comes. As far as the article on WC school mascots, other than comming off like a JERK, the guy is right.
  3. Im assuming TS and RC will be consolidating and GC will be left alone?
  4. Also agree 100%, how the mascot is presented is very important. Clevelands mascot is offensive as is the name "redskins". Although Washingtons logo is what a mascot should be. There is a very fine line
  5. I agree 100% Mascots are chosen to represent pride, strength, etc; a group should be proud that their ancestors were chosen to represent a group today. If someone, for instance chose the Fighting Irish as a mascot I wouldnt be offended(my ancestory is scots-irish), I actually dont understand why local schools dont choose Highlanders as a mascot considering much of SWVA was settled by Scottish immigrants
  6. There are two problems that caused the relatively poor name choices for the WC schools, 1) The SB wouldnt allow peoples names as school names. The fear was that selecting a person from 1 community wouldnt represent the other and cause tension. ex Francis G. Powers HS, Powers is from Pound and that wouldnt represent Wise. 2) They let the kids select the name. I understand the reason for this as they are the ones who will be attending the schools but most HS aged kids dont have a understanding of local history. JMO
  7. The problem is they picked mascot/color scheme at the same time. I think Red/Black/Gold or Burgandy/Black/Grey would have been much better oh well
  8. I actually found that pic a few weeks ago while looking up wolfpack stuff, awesome logo. I just really dont think Black and Turquoise(my understanding is the color scheme is actually going to be what the Carolina Panthers use) goes w/ Wolfpack. DC should have chosen a mascot then chosen a color scheme to match. But at least we are going to be original
  9. Have they officially went w/ the bears and Navy, Orange? No I havent heard anything specific for sure. Although im sure Eastside will go w/ something like Michigan State And Dickenson County hasnt decided on a school name yet, apparently Ridgeview is just one possibility
  10. Im not big on Union but atleast its original, I do like storm. Orange and Navy bears is overused. As far as Warriors, they are going in a completly different direction than Indians
  11. Someone over on the Cumberland forum said the same thing. I like Bears but there are alot of things that could be done w/ the Storm as a mascot, to me it would be easier for the kids to get behind. But I do like the Bears. I also heard the color scheme might be Navy, Orange. I like that scheme but not w/ the mascot, is it really necessary to copy Chicago? If thats the mascot just go w/ Royal Blue and Powder Blue
  12. If it wasnt for Honaker, Castlewood wouldnt move. The travel time to Hurley isint much worse than to Thomas Walker. Castlewood to Ewing(TW) 1hr 48 min Castlewood to Hurley 2hrs 20 min a 30 minute swing(not terrible) And other than Slate Creek and the trip over the mountain to Hurley the roads are about the same (assuming they would travel through Richlands). But I think Honaker is the kicker. If Castlewood wont move Hurley and TV are screwed and Honaker will just join another district
  13. I know CFX wont be near Council but I assume better roads will be build to access it and thus better roads to access the school. I may be wrong but from TV to Grundy isint bad and eventually their will be a better road up to Poplar Gap(the road up Sunset isint bad now). Council may just be left out of any consolidation because now that I think of it I cant imagine why an access road would be built from Council to 460, theres not one now and probably wont be one in the future. I guess it really depends on where the school is built, if its Poplar Gap thats a long way from Council, if its more centrally located then maybe
  14. Move Castlewood over to the BDD. That would give the BDD 4 football teams(5 overall) and leave the Cumberland w/ 4 teams, assuming JI Burton moves to the CD and they have shown no interest in staying in a "big" LPD I can understand why they wouldnt want to remain in the BDD but could Honaker compete on a regular basis in a "big" district with schools much larger than they are? For years Honaker has wanted to move to Region C so that they would be a D1 school and wouldnt have to compete against larger competion(and I dont blame them for it). I know Honaker has never had a problem playing hard competition in the regular season(in terms of football) but would they really want to be in a new SWD where they would be the smallest school by a couple hundred students? They already dont want to play Richlands in football.
  15. Thats the main reason I assumed Warriors wouldnt work. It will be interesting w/ Eastside being the Spartans, that takes any Roman/Trojan style mascot out of the equation
  16. I was also thinking Red Hawks, I would have went w/ maybe Wise-Glamorgan because when they eventually build a new school, it will probably be somewhere around Glamorgan, maybe over where the flea market is currently. I would also have went w/ Wise-Bull Run for the St Paul/Coeburn school for the same reason. The PV/Appy school would have been a little tougher because the new school wont be build between the 2 but somewhere in BSG, so maybe Wise-Valley or Wise-Roaring Branch. Of course the schools would go Glamorgan, Bull Run and Valley/Roaring Branch. JMO and those are better than Union, Wise Central(which isint all that bad but Central is a little common) and Eastside. Eastside were? I mean local people know its the eastside of Wise Co but no one else in the state does. I know its early but are they talking Indian Warriors like Chilhowie or a more European(Viking/Knight/etc) warrior as a mascot?
  17. That guy was me, and if things play out the way we think they might those will be the only AA schools they will have to play unless they want to travel to Carroll or Pulaski. If they are AA and dont play AA competition their chances of making the playoff would be even worse than they are now. I didnt say they would like it
  18. I like storm, just look at everything the Richlands fans do, most of thet isint Tornado stuff its Storm stuff. I also like the Maroon and Silver. The U would work, but I would go w/ lightning bolts like Air Force or the Chargers
  19. I dint know if there is a "plan". If CFX is build then TV and Council would be involved in consolidation. If no CFX then probably just Grundy and Hurley
  20. Colley was first then soon after Mullins. Both settled the area WAY before there was a Wise or Buchannon county. If Richlands and Tazewell drop I see Va High, Battle, Lebanon and Grundy joining w/ them to form a new SWD that would leave GC and Lee joining w/ WC 1,2,3 and DC(whenever its finished) to form a new LPD. I think thats everyone. There is no way TV and Hurley should ever be in a district w/ Richlands and Tazewell, ever!
  21. Aint that the truth. If in the future Abingdon was allowed to play in a combined district in say the Cumberland or the BDD then thats a big problem(that wont happen). But in a new SWD or against the current CMD teams, there really isint a problem. In single A there is no longer a Region D and district champs no longer automatically qualify for the playoffs Oh and LOL on Abingdon winning district
  22. They could run a 4 team New River District, but trust me that makes scheduling very hard. Abingdon could play in a A/AA district and I dont think any schools in that district would object to it. I wasnt really thinking that way because the VHSL doesent like to do it but that may be the only logical solution. I agree that I cant see them being granted a hardship as Abingdon is way above the A/AA cutoff. This is highly unlikley but would Washington county redraw the lines to send more students to Battle or Holston? I have no idea as to how the lines are currently drawn but that could be an option. If they moved a couple hundred students then they would possibly be able to get a travel hardship and be allowed to drop. All of that being said playing in a A/AA district would be much easier
  23. Abingdon will pretty much have to play as an independent. Which might not be so bad if AA and AAA go to a playoff format similar to what A will be doing, which makes district play almost pointless(no automatic bid). As an independent Abingdon would be able to schedule the Sullivan Co schools(for big school competition) as well as being able to continue playing smaller local schools. Carroll would be an ok fit in either the Blue Ridge or the Piedmont, where they probably should have been anyway. I would think Marion would join the Hogoheegee where they would be much more competitive, not to mention being closer to district opponents
  24. The 101st Airborn, Shifty Powers unit are nicknamed the Screaming Eagles. I dont like Eagles as a mascot(far too common) but considering the historical signifigance it would have been really nice. The Regiments patch has a lightning bolt on it(similar to what airforce uses) and the colors are Dark Blue and Green. That would have been really nice.
  25. Its definately not any easier but its atleast an even playing field now
