The Beaver has the weight and reach advantage. May not be a fair fight? Why dont schools use mascots like that more often? There not tough but are lots of fun! And you cant beat the Golden Gophers! My vote for best mascot ever
-
Who did they lose from last years team other than Rawlings?
-
I would have to go see the "Battle of the Furry Critters"!!! Bluefield / Graham
-
I would assume Hurley will be competitive w/ them, Hurley had a good team last season and should have a very good team this upcomming season. RC wasnt very good last season, TW on the other hand had some fast players but werent very good, Hurley shouldnt have any problem w/ either team. Who did those 2 replace on Hurleys schedule? How are the Rebels at RB this season?
-
I just thought you used the pic because Groundhogs are cool! Maybe one of the upcomming consolidated schools(one of the 3 Wise Co or Dickenson Co) should use the venerable Woodchuck as a mascot? Unfortunately I doubt it will happen, DC seems to either be going w/ Miners or Wolfpack(please god Wolfpack) and who knows what WC will do?

What out of state teams has Bluefield & Princeton played against
redtiger replied to a topic in SWVA Football
Its a long way from Buefield to Lee High or the Sullivan Co schools -
I feel that the 7on7s actually pushes offenses even more toward a spread style offense. Not just because the QB and Backs get more reps themselves but by the time 2adays start they are way ahead of the linemen

Oak Hill is a pretty good trip but the others are pretty close. William Campbell came to a schrimmage at JI Burton a few years ago. Thats a pretty long trip for a schrimmage
-
I like it. It could also be dont at the end of the school year. But I dont know if there would be much of a Sr turnout. I wouldnt mind seeing a June week long "camp" where at the end a team could be part of a 7on7 tournament
-
But should teams be basically practicing all summer long? But the more I think about it, 7on7s arent interfering w/ an athletes ability to participate in any other sport. So is summer practice really a big deal, I will have to think on this one a little bit Youre right it is fallout from that mess last year

This is a little off topic but, whats the farthest a local(Regions C or D, SWD) team has traveled for a regular season game? Haysi had a hard time filling out their schedule a few years ago and picked up Berea KY. It was about 3 1/2 hours(longer on a bus)
-
Not trying to point a finger at JSB or VAHigh but I personally see a problem with more than 2-3 7on7 matches(?). I mean for a spread team or a team that intends on using the spread alot that is basically a practice and should count as such.

Remember what a big deal just making the playoffs USED to be???

I like the new setup but agree that 16(thats 32 state wide!) is far too many, espicially considering that there are only gonna be roughly 48 schools in Single A Division 1. 16 state wide would have been a good number(the same as before) but w/ the state divided into 2 sections instead of 4 regions good(deserving) teams would have made the playoffs and there would have been no slouches -
Was the kid involved in other athletics before comming out for football this past season? A 400lb power clean is very impressive, he had to of had some weight training along the way somewhere

I think change needs to happen and maybe you guys are right if its just the 3A tradition thats holding things back then split A and AA 4 ways and leave 3A alone -

OK explain the burrough/township concept to me(I have no idea what that refers to). Are we talking about Richlands, Raven, Claypool Hill and Cedar Bluff all having their own school districts? Equal 4ths or 5th is what I was getting at and yes hard lines no playing up or down -

It does cheapen the title to an extent(no arguement there) but things have to be somewhat balanced and equal. I think 6 state titles is too many and 4 wouldnt be enough so 5! Seriously though I feel that if the groups arent somewhat fair(in terms of size) then there should be only 1 champion, lets all paly together regardless of size and pray we dont make the playoffs because the HUGE schools will kill us smaller schools. WV has a nice setup but the big schools in WV are only around 1000 students where VAs big schools are around 3000 students deuceswild - I can support the arguement of if they dont want to be part of the solution then leave them alone" but that sort of undermines the whole concept IMO. What basically needs to be dont is make schools play w/ others of similar enrollment and split it into 4-5 groups -

But then your numbers per each group arent anywhere near equal. To me that seems almost like the division split, just a renovation of a bad system How does PA do school districts? -

Could be but AAA is a mess, some of those schools(Central Region) have enrrollments close to D3 schools but for tradition and travel reasons they stay in AAA D5 Thomas Jefferson 735 John Marshall 850 Colonial heights 896 George Wythe 920 Those are D3 schools playing up 2 divisions, seems stupid to me -
Im going to assume the phantoms would mop the floor w/ any team WV can produce, but Phoebus is probably bigger than those schools. I do believe the quality of teams goes deeper in VA Maybe I saw Richlands vs those other BDD teams and time has played a trick on my mind?

I like the new group A setup but I agree 8 would have been better than the proposed 16. Its neat to play different teams in the playoffs, rather than playing only local teams for the first 2 rounds. Although I will miss rooting for whoever makes out of region, thats the region rep and they carry w/ them the pride of the region I dont think a 4A setup would divide the schoolls up evenly enough(in terms of enrollment), I really think a 5A setup is whats needed. With a 4A setup that divids the schools up into 4 even groups would leave the single A group containing enrollments from the smallest school - 600, I just dont feel that thats fair. Even the AA would be something like 601 - 1300. These numbers are of course just a guess on my part -
I may be wrong on the Richlands/Haysi game, could have sworn I saw them on an old schedule flyer. It was around the same time Haysi and Grundy were playing. I could be wrong tho. Like I said before I like OOS games but only if they are close i.e. Richlands/ Bluefield or Grundy/Pikeville
-
Who did they play out of Indiana? and why? I know in the mid 90s Haysi played Richlands, w/ disastarous results for Haysi There is really no "need" for them to play WV teams other than to toughen up the schedule. Although I personally like out of state matchups

I was talking more about Wyatt while he was at Pocy, but youre right Graham will do very well in the MED for several reasons(being in the group they are supposed to be in, weaker overall competition in the MED) but I seriously doubt they will be winning any State Championships anytime soon. I may be wrong but D2 isint that much weaker than D3 and Graham was no where near competitive there, but w/ the right coachwho knows. I do think things will be better for Graham in the years to come.
-
Thats the same thing ive been saying about Mark Palmer, to even make a school that small competitive is quite an accompolishment and hints to a good coach. I would think winning in the MED would be harder than winning in the Cumberland, just due to the fact that the MED has some bigger schools
