  1. I knew they made the playoffs a several years back and have really fallen off since then. Didnt know it was that bad. Youre right tho, once the parents are influencing the HC then the program is in trouble. Is Wyatt still at NW?
  2. Im a litte out of the loop on football up that way but I thought Billy Wyatt did alright at Northwood? Like I said I have no idea
  3. I assumed there had to be some kind of logical reason. The heart isint in it thing happens sometimes, as does getting beat out by a better player
  4. I have never posted over here and dont really know enough about wrestling to keep up with the sport but this kind of story is one of those that appeals to all sports fans. Calep Bartee took a second to celebrate with a familiar teammate. Himself. As his opponent, Parry McCluer’s Nathan Tomlin, stepped away, the Rye Cove senior pumped his arms in front of his chest and let out a bellowing yell toward a small, but loud, contingent of Rye Cove fans after his pin with 56 seconds left in the match. Then all of Southwest Virginia’s wrestlers and wrestling fans poured out of the Salem Civic Center stands toward the mat as Bartee, the only wrestler to walk the hallways of Rye Cove High School, collapsed into his father’s arms. That’s when Bartee buried his face into his father’s shoulder, broke down and cried. “This,†Bartee said after winning his Group A 140-pound title match, “is the best thing to ever happen to me. It makes everything worth it. I finally won.†Bartee’s coach, his father, Chris, got permission from the Virginia High School League to coach Calep as the lone representative from Rye Cove. His one-man team became a traveling road show with a 30-minute, one-way drive to practice with the Powell Valley team. The work slowly began to pay off when he finished fourth in Group A in 2009, third in 2010 and worked his way back to the tournament this season. Members of the Viking squad, along with J.I. Burton and other Southwest Virginia schools, were the first ones waiting for Calep as he walked off the mat after his win. As Calep cried, he stopped to hug everyone and his plain white singlet with “The Cove†ironed on the back became the landing spot for a flurry of pats as he slowly made his way through the crowd. Chris Bartee, in a shirt and tie, began to cry as his son worked his way through the fanfare. “My baby, my state champ, I love you so,†yelled Teresa Williams, Calep’s “Mawmaw,†as she pushed her way through the human wall and wrapped him in her arms. Calep’s friend, Ryan Petelle, lifted him off the ground with a bear hug. Chris could only wipe quickly at his eyes. Still watching. “He wanted it so bad,†Chris said. “He wasn’t going to let anybody stop him. I wore out three vehicles driving him [to practice in Big Stone Gap]. This answered it all. This answered all our prayers.†As Calep Bartee stood on the podium to receive his medal and the framed 140-pound tourney bracket, members of the Powell Valley team he practiced with, his mother, father and several other fans wearing Rye Cove shirts took photos. As word spread of Bartee’s four-year struggle, the Civic Center crowd cheered when his name was announced. With a face still red from tears, he turned toward a large Strasburg and Stonewall Jackson fan section behind him and thrust his index finger into the air. Slowly, he turned toward the Rye Cove and coalfield contingent that stood in front of him, cameras ready. “It’s the best feeling you can imagine,†he said. Then he held the framed bracket over his head. Again, Southwest Virginia erupted and Bartee, with his finger now in the air, smiled back.
  5. Thats my concern now and espicially w/ the earlier thread that was closed. Im not saying "yeah everyone drives drunk its ok lets all do it". Im saying I have before, I have been DRUNK drunk and drove(not at all proud of it but I did it), I think there are very few of us who have never had A drink and then drove home. Hypothetical situation, my fiance and I go to Olive Garden in Johnson City, I have the spaghetti and meatballs, a glass of water and a glass of white wine, as does she. Neither of us is drunk(not by a long shot), we leave the restaurant and go to the mall for around an hour, it is late and she is tired so I drive home. As we are passing through Hansonville we are pulled over by an Officer just because he feels like it, it just a stop. He smells alcohol on my breath, he asks how many ive had, I say 1, he gives me a breathalizer and it says im drunk. I go to jail and im screwed! Maybe something similar to this story is what happened? We dont know and really shouldnt speculate until the facts are out. Now a true story; Last year at Christmas we had an expensive fruit cake at work(best dang thing ever), it contains cherries, pineapples and of course alcohol(Brandy). We get out the breathalizer and low and behold after 1 piece each we are all legally drunk and to no ones suprise an hour later we are all still legally drunk. Breathalizer = unreliable, now blood alcohol content is a dead ringer. Lets see how the DUI plays out before making assumptions All of that being said he is a teacher and should be held to a higher standard because he has a great influence on the young adults around him, but lets not condem him just yet
  6. The DUI is a definate bone head move (and a dangerous one at that) but I think alot of us have done it and just didnt get caught.
  7. Was it a case where he did noncontact drills/practice but wasnt allowed to play?
  8. Very true,my fiance works as a sexual assault advocate and it is unbelieveable what some people get away with. My issue is not with those that discussed the situation(hell I did) but with those who assumed he was guilty from the begining.
  9. Alot of people shot off at the mouth when they didnt know anything about what was going on. From now on when we hear his name it isint "oh he coaches at Battle" its gonna be "he was accused of doing something with minors" and wrongfully so. Thats why I posted and thats the issue not where I got my information or who I speak w/. It is appauling that some on here branded him as a bad person(to put it lightly) w/o any reason or proof!
  10. From what I hear(I have a good source) Ryan Whitten, the Head Football Coach at John Battle High School has been cleared of all charges by the Washington County DA and the Washington County sheriffs dept considers the case closed. The department of Social Services is still involved but they are expected to close the case within the next 30 days. Alot of rumors were spread regarding Mr. Whitten and his reputation has been drug through the mud by several of the posters on this site, he was judged and sentenced by some w/o them knowing any facts of the situation. To those of you who ran your mouths before knowing any facts, you should be ashamed and maybe you will learn to keep your mouths shut and let the law handle such matters.
  11. Respect
  12. I was thinking the same thing on page 10! As far as Crigger is concerned, he didnt have much to work w/ at TV but I guess the program is a little better now than before, I wouldnt put much stock in his record at TV For my part I wasnt saying PH should have lined up in the Power T and tried to run FB belly 30 times a game. I think throwing the ball is an equalizer as where a spread offense is a way to get more talent/speed on the field, if you dont have alot of talent/speed you shouldnt be running a spread offense. I do think PH would have been better suited running an offense w/ a TE which would have allowed the linemen to take advantage of angles. A scheme like the Wing-t would have allowed for angles, traps and double team blocks. I think a couple of us are just saying that would have been more effective. Earlier in this thread there were some videos of PH playing Abingdon and look at the offensive scheme and its easy to see why they struggled. B.I. was at Castlewood and now he is at J.J.Kelly, he has been there for 5-6 years now. On a related note JJK was in bad shape when he got there, his 1st season I believe they tried some spread and other things, since then they have been a wing-t team and have alot of success w/ undersized linemen and average QBs, just saying
  13. all of that is very true. With more work from the players no doubt PH would have been more successful, when Richlands players step on the field you can tell they have put alot of work in, it can be seen not just in their size but how hard they fight, the old saying "the harder a man works, the harder it is for him to lose" comes to mind. But I really think the discussion has moved more to PHs scheme and not on the program itself, im sure Compton worked hard to develop the program and he was fighting an uphill battle
  14. i think it depends on how a coach runs "the" spread; if were talking about lining up in 2x2 all the time and either throwing deep or running HB dive(powell valley did this alot while they were running the spread) then i dont think it will work, now if were talking about mixing it up w/ various sets, personnel combinations and motion(Richlands does this) then yes I believe youre right it can be successful at this level. We have to remember that this is low level high school football, I think that gets forgotten alot. JMO
  15. Richlands, Virginia High and Patrick Henry do not run the same basic scheme, VA High and Richlands dont even run the same scheme and if you really think they do you really dont know anythig about Xs and Os. Just because 2 teams are both running spread sets doesent mean they are running a similar scheme. But you are right VA High and Richlands do have better athletes than PH. The schemes they run fit their personnel, PHs scheme did not fit its personnel
  16. Dickenson County is tentatively scheduled to have the high schools consolidated in 3 years. Sadly Haysi may not have made it back by the time consolidation occurs.
  17. I dont think Richlands would go away from the spread but w/ Johnson at RB and the turnover/inexperience at WR would Mance maybe go to more I formation? Its hard to have a D1 RB on your team and not put a FB in front of him.
  18. I think ANY coach w/ experience and a successful record that applies for the PH job should be given serious consideration by the community, school and players. They should also be grateful that said coach applied given the current state of PH football. Not trying to knock the program but it is a pretty bad situation.
  19. Falconfan1, you should know that names(such as yours) should be capitalized and in your sentence "I don't claim to know everything about football, however; I can spell defense though.", he though really isint necessary. No Haysi doesent have any State crowns, but the program does have 3 Region D titles and many, many district titles. Im not saying Haysi is the cradle of football knowledge, just that alot of the "new" innovations that teams are using nowadays have been done at Haysi by James Colley since the late 80s. As far as what I do or dont know about football, well, I know enough
  20. I always knew Lance was a closet Graham fan! Glad to see you come out Lance, be proud of who you are! Just kidding
  21. Falconfan1, when you know jack about football come back and talk to me Meaty_2, im not a know-it-all, but I do know what im talking about, most teams in this area run an 8 man front, against a 4 wide formation it becomes a 6 man front. Im from Haysi and we have been running spread sets for the past 25 years so I have a pretty good idea about how a defense will line up against a 2x2 or 3x1 set! As far as slide protection that is for passing the ball not running it, I didnt mention PHs pass blocking schemes. Dive wont work consistantly out of a spread set, 5 blockers vs 6 defenders. PH may read the end and trap backside like Abingdon but they dont have the quality of players that Abingdon does(hence their problems and why people have a problem w/ Compton). Most local teams DO NOT run zone blocking schemes. The basic rules of blocking have not changed, not at this level, Gap-On-Backer works Jonah58, sorry for not making myself clear, Haysi runs a FB/QB read on the DE w/ man on man blocking (also ran it some this year from shotgun w/ HB/QB) like the veer w/o the pitch read, just a basic end read, thats more what I was referring to. I still dont agree that zone blocking will work(at least not consistantly) due to a stacked box, those seams that the zone exploits and relies on just arent there due to the extra linebacker. The Hugh Wyatt system is pretty tough to stop, like you said 2 basic plays and a QB keep, trap or pass every now and then to mix things up Hammerhead, Palmer is Mark Palmer the head coach at St Paul, hes a good guy, gets alot out of his kids and knows offense. He doesent have any state or region titles that I know of as a head coach(coaching at St Paul and Ervinton makes it hard, the situations at St paul, Ervinton and Patrick Henry are similar) but he does have some district titles and has been coaching for 15 or so years and has had some success at schools where very few have Im not saying anything against Compton personally, he may be a great, dedicated, hard working guy but his offensive scheme doesent fit his players very well and it shows I think that covers everyone
  22. If you have quick, big linemen and a smart QB that reads the Defence and audibles the offense into good situations then it will work but those are rare situations. It has to be a quick and effective double team because the defender has the angle on the O linemen A lot of little league coaches do that and its terrible for the players, the backs try to out athlete opponents and the linemen dont really learn what blocking is A read option and a zone play are very different
  23. Zone blocking wont work against a regular 8 man front, it just wont. In high school formations and motion open up running lanes not superior blocking. Zone blocking doesent hit a gap it looks for the defense to stretch too far and open up a gap, against an 8 man front there is a linebacker standing in that gap. Either trap, option, double team or have the backs hit the hole fast(dives) thats all that will work (at this level). Im all for innovation but out of the 40 or so local SWVA schools do any of them use zone blocking? I dont think so. They may take zone plays and adapt them to trap schemes i.e. Abingdon runs a Zone Read type play form a 2x2 set but they pull the guard and tackle to the bakside to lead for the HB, if the DE crashes then the QB keeps the ball, its not the ZR but it is ZR inspired. Draw the plays up against a 4-4 or a 3-5 defense and its easy to see it wont work, and most schools run an 8 man front(six man against a 4 wide set) unless the offense throws the ball really, REALLY well and most dont Just because something is simple and easy doesent mean its smart
  24. Forecast for Dallas through thursday is low to mid 20s and windy, not to mention the snow and ice
  25. I know it is probably the premier program in a football obsessed state, but an indoor practice facility is rediculious
