  1. just a few miles from each other. Norton will be the wildcard in this deal. If they join, they would most likely go to Eastside
  2. J.J.Kelly/Pound = Central Powell Valley/Appalachia=Union Coeburn/St. Paul= Eastside
  3. Jason Mullins at Central
  4. Enrollment dropped but you would have figured that combining the communities would have offset/leveled that out though right? To have 25 out at a school consisting of more than one community is absurd
  5. What has been the issue with Twin Valley? They have not been competitive at all on the gridiron since they formed. Back in the day the Garden Green Dragons were a tough date
  6. Not to mention the tons of times he used his personal ride to help out the school and never asked for a dime. Guess that went unoticed.
  7. LOVE Salem Stadium. By far the nicest around (that I have visited-haven't visited Mitchell to compare). As for field conditions,I forgot to mention the now defunct Riggs Stadium at Appy. Much history and tradition, but the field was horrendous
  8. Really? My mom has lived in Hillsville for 10 years and I love the place. Some of the nicest folk I have ever met. You know what they say though about bad apples in every barrell
  9. I always enjoyed traveling to Coeburn and Carl McConnell Stadium. Good seating, good view, good food. Betsy Layne KY the worst that I have ever been to (seating atrocious). Best food-Rye Cove and that delicious Eagle's nest. Worst food-GC and that black beauty hot dog chili :)
  10. I'm not one of those parents who pushes my kids, wanting them to be superstars. I saw so much of that while coaching Little League I grew to despise it They do what they are wanting to do,but I sure am glad that the eldest is self-motivated enough to know that playing multiple sports will keep him in shape (and even better for me keep him busy. Bored kids tend to get into bad situations). My kids are aware though if they make a commitment to do so and I invest time and money into it to assist them meet their goals, then I expect them to put in the work required to succeed
  11. agreed and on a similar note my eldest is playing summer baseball with the football coaches blessing toward that end (as well as lifting). I see so many youth growing up nowadays with a feeling of entitlement. I have taught my 2 that if you want it you have to bust your chops to get it
  12. Excellent post. In the adult world you have to work hard and do a bit more than required to reap reward. Let this be an early lesson for these kids. If you are going to skip summer work, don't be crying from the pine in the fall. Coaches want to see what their kids are made of,test their mettle to see what character they bring to the gridiron on Friday nights
  13. Lord Botetourt, William Fleming,William Byrd,Cave Spring,Northside,Hidden Valley
  14. color was a bit more orange and a shade less brown-looking.
  15. https://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/groups/peacewc?ap=1 good look at Union's
  16. His description is right. I can recall seeing them many years ago. The orange was the color of Bowling Green's helmets. Just a shade lighter than UTEP/Clemson's
  17. Can't speak for Eastside and Union, but Central's finished helmet is the same as my avatar
  18. Let's save this thread and revisit it in a few years and see which one is right about Burton being fine or not :) Too many folks are betting on kids going to Norton because they are "pissed off". Not going to happen IMO,and according to what the gent told me at the game, the folks in AC/Cov are past the point of just talking about it and have scheduled meetings with officials. At any rate, with more schools consolidating,I would figure that athletic scheduling will become an issue for schools like Burton at some point.
  19. Spoke to a fellow from Alleghany County at the JJK-Honaker game today and he said a consolidation with Covington is in the works. The day of the small school is coming quickly to an end. Schools like J.I.Burton have some hard thinking to do.
  20. Pretty special to have a baseball bunch going for state title #10 and the gals going for #9 (girls tennis) at the same time. Pretty special school there on Birchfield, and while I know progress is inevitable as is change in life, still sad to see it go (so many memories). This is really a fine group of young ladies who have made us proud (as well as a tough, gritty baseball squad that doesn't know what quit means). GO GET 'EM GALS and guys J.J.Kelly will be chasing VSHL GROUP A TEAM TITLES #25 and 26. We have had lots of reasons over the years to be proud on The Reservation. Guess we'll have to show our new mates from Pound how it's done :)
  21. Going to be interesting to see how quickly the kids at the 3 new Wise Co schools gel. I think if we can get it together quickly,we'll be very competitive
  22. So many great memories and so many champions at Shupe Field (get very emotional thinking about tonight being the last time). So very glad our final game there was a classic and we went out with a bang.
  23. More late-inning heroics as the Indians upend Grayson County 11-10 in 10 innings after being down 5-2,and down 2 more times in the contest. Fitting that in our last year of existence the school that wrote the book on VA baseball is heading back to Radford. This bunch is not the most talented that we have had,but they are perhaps the grittiest and most resilient. We've been behind every game since the Regions began, but this bunch refuses to lose.
