Ritchie Thomas had success playing Marion, VA High, Abingdon, Haysi, Coeburn, George WYthe, et........I would love to see what he would do with the schedule Ph plays now.

Yeah PH had a good schedule back in those days. They even took down Julius Jones and the PV Vikings in a pre-season scrimmage back in 1997. Too bad they had so many injuries for the Region C championship against Radford that year. If they had remained fully healthy, defeated Radford, and met the Vikings in the semis, I think it would have been an epic game.

  2. They should try to get Richie Thomas back. Not sure if he would be interested, but he retired from Wythe County last year. He had some success there in the 90s, and it's his alma mater. Worth a shot.

I doubt I will ever attend another game that ends 2-0.

A very rare occurrence, indeed. I remember a game, I think it was  between John Battle and Holston, sometime back in the mid to late 90's, that the final score was 3-2.

  4. Yes. I was at that game, along with my wife who was 7 months pregnant at the time. Very cold, windy, with occasional snow showers. Holston tried to kick what would have been a very long field goal on the last possession. From what I heard other people in the stands saying, he had made kicks from that distance in practice. The kick never went up, it just bounced on the ground.

Abingdon  went very vanilla against Patrick Henry. Basically only playing the first string the first quarter, and then began subbing, and still put up 53.  I'm sorry but Martin Lucus is going to run all over Battle.  Abingdon by at least 3 TDs.

I think teams are going to find Abingdon a lot more physical than normal  this season.

I was not at the game, but from what I was told, PH was also subbing at the same time. Starters played the first half for both teams for the most part. Abingdon was only leading at the half 7-0. I was told that PH got close to scoring but threw a pick. 2nd half was mostly all subs except for a few exceptions.

  6. I was going to fire back with a sharp little quip but I have thought better and realize I should adhere to the old saying "If you can't say anything nice, dont say anything at all"

But, I will ask this. NAME 'EM, Thats right Name 'EM, Name the players AHS POACHED from PH.

Yeah I would like to know too....

  7. This Rebel team is the best team since 91. They have it all, solid line, solid skill players and solid coaching. Everyone is counting the rebels out but this isn't the George Wythe that won state. This is a weak George Wythe. I have seen them play and it's very one dimensional. They have a hard time throwing the ball. This Rebel team will surprise the masses tomorrow night. They will hit anyone that is in their way. You could put Gate City or Richlands across them and it's going to a physical match up.

You must also be forgetting the PH team of 1997. Went 10-0 in the regular season, and had a real shot at bringing home a title until injuries took their toll. They took down a great Rural Retreat team TWICE, the regular season game was a dogfight until PH pulled away late in the 4th. The Rebels suffered several key injuries in the final game of the regular season at Coeburn. In round 1 of the playoffs, The Rebels met the Indians again, This time the Rebels dominated even with the injuries and came out with a 17-0 win. However, the next week in the Region C championship against Radford, those injuries, along with a few more that occurred during the game, had the Rebels trying to fill positions with whoever they could. I know for a fact that they were playing a 4th string punter at the end of the game. Nonetheless, they held their own with the Bobcats, coming out with a 20-7 loss.

The Rebs, at the beginning of that year, had went over to Powell Valley for a preseason scrimmage. The Rebs DOMINATED the Vikings that day. Yes, The same Vikings that had running back Julius Jones and won state that year. PV coach Phil Robbins has even admitted to this loss in the BHC a few years ago when he was retiring. The playoff matchup, had it have happened, would have been very interesting if the Rebels were fully healthy.

Anyway, I can't speak for this year's team. I have not seen them play, because I have moved out of the area. I did see them last year, and the Humphreys kid does have some potential, but I don't know about D1. He still has the rest of this season and 1 more left, so time will tell.

  8. Just learned yesterday that, for the first time in the history of the two schools, (For Abingdon this includes the PH predecessor schools Glade Spring and Meadowview) PH and Abingdon will not be playing each other in football. The two never really had many close games but the end of a tradition nonetheless. Abingdon dominated this series in recent years while PH dominated back in the 90's. Abingdon is a much bigger school than PH and the Rebels have struggled in recent years but it's only fitting that the two play each other. The two schools only being separated by 8 miles would always draw a huge turnout by both sides to this game.

I learned this from a PH football player, they already have shirts with the coming years schedule on it. Hopefully the two can at least play a pre-season benefit game.

For the next two years, the Rebels have picked up Thomas Walker and Rye Cove. I'm guessing that it was mostly Abingdon wanting out of this game. It doesn't make sense for PH to replace Abingdon with a team from over 100 miles away from an economic standpoint.

  9. They maybe are . . . but I don't think they've ever beat my Falcons or if they have it was before I was born. I've never seen it.

The last time that PH beat you guys was in 2004. PH dominated Abingdon in the 90's, taking every game except for '91 and '95, and PH also won the 2000 game.

So let's see here, if 2004 was before you were born, that would make you 7 years old.

That explains a lot. Doesn't it everyone?!

  10. Ph could have won both of their games last night, but made a few mistakes. Overall they looked much improved over last year, but they still have a few things to work on. They can move the ball and get it inside the 10 but are having trouble finishing the job. Their QB who is only a sophomore looked good as did receiver #4 (Can't remember their names)

  11. holston beats ph one every 20 but done it last year and will do it again this year

I dont think it will happen again this year, and also, better enjoy this season, because it will be the last thing Holston fans will have to cheer about for a long, long time
