Since we're early into the season, but there's been enough football played to have a good idea of the top 1A teams this year. What do most people on this website think will be the likely finalists for 1A Region C and D?

    I'm going to guess:

    Region C-Galax versus Parry McCluer

    Region D-Chilhowie versus Grundy

Man you like a little girl.  Commenting a little heart emoji because Hurley lost. No matter where you take your kid he can’t play. Grow the hell up. Grundy can’t beat  JI burton , eastside or chilhowie or galax.

  2. Good scheduling job by Richlands, you gain nothing by playing down in competition. The folks at Hurley will figure that out one day. Glad to see GC's schedule I think it is right for the talent they have to work with I just hope there is some breaks between the murder's row that used to start the season. South will be way down but Boone will be tough. Abingdon, Union and Richlands will be there usual tough games.

I lIke how everyone likes to pick on Hurley's scheduling. Pick one team on Hurley's schedule that has a smaller enrollment than Hurley . Its not easy to get teams to come to Hurley. Nobody said anything when these  teams were beating us . We go 10-0 and here comes the talk.  Actually I would say the schedule did hurt Hurley in the playoffs because Hurley's players never played past the 2nd quarter. Hurley is the second smallest school in the state. They are actually playing up with anybody they play.  Castlewood, Eastside, twin Springs, Holston, Shelby Valley all dropped Hurley for the upcoming cycle.  All of these teams Hurley has beat easily the last few years with the exception of 2A Shelby Valley.  I dont think you can pick on a teams schedule when every team they played was a larger school.  I actually think last years Hurley team was better than this years team and they finished 9-3 and lost to Galax  28-14 in a tight ballgame. Galax went on to win the state.  Hurley is playing the teams they suppose to. Did there schedule hurt them this year? Probably. No one metioned there schedule last year when they gave Galax all they could handle. The kids in Hurleys program went 10-0 because they put in the work . Not because of scheduling. Every team on the 2016 schedule was a larger school if you want to check the enrollment numbers.

  3. I agree that Hurley doesn't have the toughest schedule.  I'm being real and Hurley is not on the same level ad GW and Galax right now but I think them and Patrick henry would be a game. Shelby Valley KY which is 2A I think is a better team than most of Hurley's schedule.  Hurley is second smallest school in the state with a football team.  I don't think we can play, Richlands, Abindon, Gate City, Union and those teams. Nobody is proclaiming we have tough schedule but everybody we play is bigger than us. Don't get offensive when we have fans that get on here and "talk" a lot. Its just excitement. Don't blame "Hurley" for scheduling teams they are suppose to play. Once again everbody on their schedule has a bigger enrollment than they do. Hurley has 185 kids 9-12. Hurley still has a long way to go. If they play Galax, GW, or Parry McClure right now I don't think they win. I think Grundy and Honaker will be a dog fight for them. I wish the rebels good luck the rest of the way.

  4. Hurley still needs two games for the next cycle. Eastside, Holston, Castlewood, and Shelby valley all dropped Hurley.  They also had to pick up Eastern Montgomery for the next cycle.  That is a 3 hour trip at least.  I know all these schools do not  want to come to Hurley but it makes it hard for a school the size of Hurley with 185 kids 9-12 to play anybody close by with all these schools dropping them.

  5. Honaker had a very good game plan and came out on top and that's all that matters.  Thad back up QB looked better than the starting QB. People don't get it twisted a lot of Hurley people were there puling for the tigers. I don't know what "Rebel Pride" is smoking but don't get him tangled up with all Hurley people. I think people assume that Radford would beat Honaker because they did not struggle with Hurley and Honaker did for the first half. Its all about match-ups. Honaker showed a lot of character at the end of the game and also showed why they are one of the top teams around. Again, don't get it twisted Hurley is pulling for ya.  Good luck next week and keep representing the BDD!!

  6. Easy for you to say that it's no excuse, but Honaker did have good talent even off the bench. How can a kid who plays non-stop compete with someone who sits out all defense or offense long, unless that kid who plays non-stop is a pure horse? Seems like a valid excuse to me, but hey that is how it always has and will be when we play you guys. Must be awesome having kids who want to play ball and a somewhat bigger crop. If all the guys at Hurley who should play would come out we would probably at least have enough to rest some on special teams. No ideal why a high school kid wouldn't want to be part of the football program at their school.

Because Hurley only has 188 kids in the school is the reason.....28 players for that amount of kids is pretty good!!!!

  7. i know the merger of erivnton, haysi, clintwood, is coming soon, whats everyones thoughts about the wave joining cumberland??? i hoped they would join the bdd.

Too good to join the BDD. They said travel was the reason. All the cumberland teams were on the highway and to travel to all BDD schools would be a rougher drive with the road conditions. All BDD schools are closer!! Still dont make sense to me!! Their consolidating in a couple years with Haysi but yet their too good to play them right now and join the BDD....Plus the competiton level would be a lot tougher than the cumberland.....Honaker, Haysi, Grundy, Hurley year in and year out are most of the time better than all cumbeland teams with the exception of a few years....They would definately get it handed to them in all sports other than football....

  8. I think Haysi will play a contain defense; try to limit JIBs big plays and make them win by execution.

Haysi will be able to pass on JIB, the question on offense will be how much of a running game they can get going.

Hurley shut Haysi's passing game down so JI burton should be able to handle it....
  9. Where can the stats. from TV and Hurley be found.I have looked everywhere I know, and can't find them.
The ADAMs kid had around 200 rushing for TV. Cooper was 17-24 for 230 and 3 TD's. Bergalowe had 108 and 4 TD's. Tanner charles had 6 catches for 95 yards
  10. Fail lol on the part of using two names.

To be on topic though,I hate the way this county is ran, Ward is the head coach therefore let him make decisions a head coach makes, but since that makes too much sense I hope like Lance that they just fit in and things go smooth.

Off topic but who else has xferd this year in Buchanan?

How does he have to let the kids on the team?

  11. If they missed that many practices. How in the world were they starting against Grundy? If you allow them to miss and still play them, and then out of the blue say you miss too much. As them playing at Grundy, if they practice they play. If not, they sit. That is from day one. Not after the third game.

hackney never started agiainst Grundy? he sit the first 2 series......he sat out of practices becasue something was always wrong with him....from my understanding he was there most of time but always found a way out of practice. clabough didnt miss as much as hackney but he was kicked for other reasons.....Hackney will miss a least 1 day a week and the others days somethin will be wrong with him

  12. You know Hurley has played football for 60 years with their first season being in 1951. Unfortunately Hurley has been on the short end of the stick in this rivalry. The Rebels won in 1953, 1986, and in 1992. Besides those three seasons Grundy has won every other matchup between the two schools. However I truly believe this is the year that Hurley defeats the Wave. I believe when you look at the two teams on paper Hurley is just the better team. I however am not saying this to be, as Lance put it early, talking SH!T. I am just stating my opinion on the matchup. So to all you Grundy fans you can take that ever how you want to, but it's just my opinion.
You are wrong....Grundy beat Hurley 32-6 in 1992. that was the year hurley won district. last time hurley won was in 1991.....21-6.....
  13. hurley said theyd win last year too......my prediction is grundy by 14 if they stop bergelowe they stop the whole offence
You must hang around over there in TV country.........I know everyone over there wants to see Hurley lose.....I just glad you guys have a good squad this year......
  14. George wyth, Honaker, and Radford are D-2. Which I still don't think Hurley would have any problem what so ever holding their own with. And I assure you, Honaker and Twin Valley are not the best in the BDD. Hurley "should" be the favorite to win Region D once again. And Gman, the basketball thread is

Open during the off season, so you can lay off with the butt head remarks :)

i thought we were talking about football!!! thats the reason i said that.....GW, radford , and honaker are D1 in football
  15. Anyone in D1, Region D, that could give Hurley a run for their money ?
quit getting on here and posting that dumb sh##........are you kidding? d1 consist of george wythe, radford, honaker,etc...Im sure they could name the score when they play hurley.....twin valley and honaker are the best teams in the BDD right now
  16. Layne decides to play football at Bluefield College

    By JONATHAN GREENE

Bluefield Daily Telegraph The Bluefield Daily Telegraph Thu Jul 21, 2011, 04:57 AM EDT

BLUEFIELD, Va. — There’s a saying “better late than never.â€

Hurley’s John Layne executed that to perfection Wednesday when he signed to continue his football career at Bluefield College.

“It’s a great feeling to know I get to play football again,†Layne said. “I get four more years of football.â€

While Layne is thrilled to continue playing, Bluefield head coach Mike Gravier is pleased to snag a player of his quality right before camp begins in August.

“It’s obviously a coup for us to get somebody with his ability (and) athleticism to be part of our program this late in the game,†he added. “We’re finding that there are a lot of guys out there that are still looking and deciding. Some guys are deciding right now that maybe I do want to play football.

“They thought maybe they weren’t going to. Some guys get that taste playing in All-Star games and getting into this time of year they feel they should be doing that. We’re very fortunate and happy to get John at this late date.â€

Playing in the Southwest Virginia Touchdown Club’s Blue-Gray All-Star game last month at Mitchell Stadium may have been exactly what it took to get the 5-foot-10, 225 pound Layne to make Bluefield his home.

“It helped a lot,†Layne said. “That was one of the main reasons right there. I came out here and made a lot of friends. Quite a few of them are going to attend this college. I figured I’d want to be a part of it.â€

While at Hurley, Layne lined up on the offensive line and played linebacker. Gravier, though, does not have a position penciled in yet.

“John’s a football player,†Gravier said. “That’s the bottom line. He’s a guy who loves the game, loves to the play game and plays it right.

“You can always find a place for guys like that. Like everybody else we’ve recruited, we’re not sure what side of the ball he’ll be on. When we have football players, you can find a place for them on the football field.â€

In addition to playing on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, Layne was called up by Hurley head coach Greg Tester to play special teams for the small school as well.

“We’re definitely going to miss his presence,†Tester said. “He’s been a leader on our squad. You can’t replace a player like him.

“He was the heart and soul for our defense. He started both ways and played special teams. I think Bluefield is going to be pleased with his signing.â€

Tester says during Layne’s four years he saw a boy become a man right in front of his eyes.

“We had him up when he was in ninth grade,†he added. “We knew what type of player he was going to be. I knew what type of player he was going to be on the JV program.

“When he was in the ninth grade, he was boy. But, now he’s a man. He’s hit the weight room hard. He’s got a great work ethic. I think Bluefield will be very pleased to have him out here.â€

His work ethic and play on the field is exactly what caught Gravier’s eye.

“Obviously, John’s been in the weight room,†he said. “That stands out right away. Seeing his film and seeing the way he stood out as a player on his film. He comes from a great family.

“When he came in on his visit, we had a great time sitting around talking and sharing with each other. You want those kind of people as part of your program.â€

Layne will join a select few of Hurley players to make the jump to collegiate football.

“It’s very rewarding to see a kid that you’ve worked with and has put in this time to sign and continue their education plus have a chance to play football,†Tester said. “I couldn’t be more excited for him. I think he’ll be able to contribute to Bluefield’s program.â€

The All-Group A honoree and two-time All-Region D selection will be within driving distance from home, which is something his family is happy about.

“Not only for my immediate family, but there are also friends and others that are pleased with it,†his mother Jacqueline Layne said. “Whereas it’s close, it’s a plus for us to be able to come see him back on the field again. That’s something he’s always wanted to do.â€

Jacqueline added “I’m very proud of him. He’s on the right path. With all his hard work and determination, I believe he’ll do just fine.â€

John Layne will suit up for the Rams this fall when Bluefield resurrects its football program after more than 60 years of lying dormant.

“It’s going to feel great,†Layne said with a smile. “I get to play football again.â€
