  1. With the way Hurley has played since mid January when they were upset by Honaker by 4 the Rebels have been on a roll. Running through everyone that gets in there way. Some teams have made big runs at Hurley in games and like Honaker did the other night some have even played with a lead on Hurley. The only thing is Hurley refuses to lose and can turn a 12 point deficit into a 16 point win. This team just has a killer instinct that they are just not gonna be beat. Also you never know how they are gonna beat you as we seen against Honaker with Peck and Allen having big games. They play great as a team and I seriously believe they are gonna make it to the state tournament and from there... How knows what could happen!!!

  3. Hurley had 4 players in double digits, plus Waynick had 8. Then look at the stats from the line the Rebels went 19-20!!!! That is fundamentals right there and thats what championship teams do. Most teams would had hung their heads and gave up in that first half but not this group. Once they got the lead at the end of the half I told my wife, Honaker is beat, I said Hurley is on a run and plus they play their best ball in the 2nd half. They tend to just finish you off in the 2nd half. Thats the type of killer instinct that it takes to be a champion. You have to be able to only play with the great teams you have to be able to put them away when the game is on the line. Again great job Rebels!!! 21 wins and still counting!!!
  4. Here is the article that appears in the Bluefield paper today!!! PILGRIM'S KNOB, Va. — Although there were some different stars, the success continued for the Hurley Rebels in the Black Diamond District. The Rebels added the tournament trophy to their regular season title with a 79-60 win over Honaker in the title tilt. It wasn’t easy. Honaker came out of the gate quickly and led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter. Using three consecutive baskets by Cory Brown, including a couple of 3’s the Tigers built their largest lead 34-33 with 4:20 to play in the first half. “We knew Honaker has a good team,†Hurley coach Mark Cooper said. “We knew they would come after us from the start. I kept telling my guys, if we can withstand their initial run and have a lead at halftime we would have a good chance to win the game.†Hurley came back with a 30-point second quarter. The Rebels were able to keep it close by having a huge night at the foul line. Hurley was 19-of-20 from the charity stripe in the first half. Wesley Peck and Thomas Allen each made a 3-pointer just before the half to give the Rebels a 43-42 advantage. “I can’t say enough about how Thomas Allen played,†commented Cooper. “Todd Hurley and Carey Brown came off the bench and played great. This was just a great team win. “I’ve told them all year long to keep digging, keep playing hard. If you keep working, you will get a chance and tonight they came through.†Anytime Honaker (11-9) tried to mount a challenge in the second half, Peck or Allen would drop in a 3 to take the wind out of their sails. The Rebels began to methodically pull away. Peck (21 points), Tyler Cooper (18), Austin Cooper (17), and Allen (12) were all in double figures for Hurley. The inside duo of Jeremiah Dye (15 points) and Payton Ball (12) led the Tigers. Both teams will advance to the Region D playoffs next week. Hurley (21-3) will be one of the top seeds in Division 1 and will host a yet to be determined opponent on Wednesday. “We’re peaking at the right time,†stated Cooper. “But it only gets tougher. There won’t be an easy one’s from here on out. Hopefully we can make a run for it.†At Twin Valley High School HONAKER (60) Davis 1 0-0 3, Ball 5 2-5 12, Hall 3 0-0 6, Brown 4 0-0 11, Dye 6 3-4 15, B. 5. I believe he did get the game ball after the game everyone was at Pizza Hut and he had it and didnt look like he was gonna be letting go of it anytime soon. lol Peck and Allen saved their best game for one of the biggest of the year. Peck was so thrilled with the win he held the trophies in the air and even when they came in Pizza Hut after the game he still had the trophies in his hand. So happy for these boys, I cheered til I believe I about lost my voice tonight. Great job Hurley now its off to the region d tournament next week.
  6. I was basically just trying to make a point that for several weeks now Tyler had the stats that was worthy of being player of the week. But for some reason the Bluefield paper it seems have been against anyone this side of Richlands. Look at the list of everyone who has won if you don't believe me. They have been several players worthy of the award from around here but they have never got it.
  7. Much deserved!!! It's about time that the Bluefield Daily Telegraph finally gave Tyler some respect!!! Any doubt that this kid should had been the player of the week the last 3 or 4 weeks!!! Check this out!!! 01/27 W 59-48 Grundy (VA) 16 01/28 L 64-68 Honaker (VA) 25 02/01 W 71-49 Phelps (KY) 34 02/04 W 67-39 Twin Valley (VA) 20 02/05 W 50-40 Appalachia (VA) 18 02/08 W 62-51 Council (VA) 20 02/09 W 77-57 Honaker (VA) 28 02/11 W 65-49 Haysi (VA) 22 Thats a average of 22.8 points a game and a 7-1 record during that stretch. Also include in that he scored his 1000th point during this stretch and helped Hurley win their 2nd straight BDD regular season title. Oh also before the brawl at Twin Valley on Jan, 18, Tyler had 26 against Appalachia on Jan, 4 and 28 against Grundy on Jan 14, both of which were wins also. So heres a message for the Bluefield Daily Telegraph maybe you should just give Tyler a Player of the Month award for January and February. Anyway just want to end by saying congrats to Tyler and also congrats to Hurley on a 19-3 regular season and the BDD regular season championship. Oh and a early congrats on whats yet to come!!! GO REBELS!!!
  8. The BDD boys tournament looks like this. Tuesday Feb, 15 Council vs Twin Valley Friday Feb, 18 Council/Twin Valley winner vs. Hurley Honaker vs. Haysi The entire rundown of all the district tournaments can be found at http://www.bdtonline.com
  9. I thought the dunk he had at home against Council was the best one I had seen from him. That is until I seen this thunderous 2 hand slam over top two Haysi players. He is a very gifted player who has some serious skills. The thing everyone around here needs to think about before his senior year next year. This kid is still learning every game and we have not seen just what he is capable of doing just yet. This entire starting 5 returns next year with the big man Waynick in the middle and Austin Cooper, Tyler Cooper, Thomas Allen who are all gonna be seniors next season and also Wesley Peck who will be a Sophomore next season. So note to all teams if you can't handle the Rebels this season, you will be in trouble come next season as they will be a year older and even more talented and also even more hungry.
  10. No unfortunately I did not get any of the dunk. I got a whole bunch of him dunking during warm ups. Would love to had got that but I didn't. I did get some good ones though. Got a lot of good ones of the post game stuff as well.
  11. Awesome game last night that place was loud!!! The refs did make a lot of bad calls in my opinion, which cause Austin to get into foul trouble very early but the rest of the team picked up the slack. The Rebels were not gonna be denied last night. Congrats on the win and the regular season title, but no it does not end here!! Best of luck the rest of the way Rebels!!! 19 wins and still counting!!!
  12. Great performance by the Rebels in this one!! Never trailed, Honaker pulled it close. It was down to a 10 point game at the half 40-30. Honaker would even cut it down to a 5 point game at 44-39 with about 3 minutes to go in the 3rd. Then Tyler Cooper lead the Rebels on a 18-3 run that would put the Rebels up by 25 points at one time. Tyler Cooper at one point scored 7 straight Hurley points. I thought I remember them saying on the radio that he scored 18 points in just the 2nd half. Tyler Cooper has been hot in the last few games. He was even named the new peoples bank player of the week from what ive heard. The Rebels are playing great right now!!! Go Rebels 18-3
  13. The Hurley Rebels won again tonight as they defeated the Council Cobras tonight 62-51. The Rebels lost the lead early but then was able to jump out to a 15 point lead at one point. The Cobras would close it to about 8, but never really challenged after that. The Rebel had some of the best passes I've seen in a long time. Beautiful execution on offense by the Rebels. Dustin Waynick put the exclamation point on this one in the 4th with a thunderous 2 hand slam that brought the Rebel fans to their feet. The Rebels are now 17-3 overall and now have a record of 5-1 in the BDD. The Rebels host BDD rivals the Honaker Tigers tomorrow night in a game that could possibly decide the BDD regular season champions. Go Rebels!!!
  14. Looks like after last night everyone could say Hurley. They put a near 30 pt beat down on Twin Valley last night. The Rebels have not lost a game at home since Feb. 2009. They are tough at home and the crowd really gets behind them and they feed off the Hurley crowd well and always seems to play better at home because of the fans!!
  15. Hurley's Tyler Cooper scored his 1,000 point tonight for the Rebels after a 35 point performance against Phelps. Also the Rebels won tonight not sure the score but it was around a 20 point win. The Rebels are now 14-3!!!
  16. I don't know who you are or how you know my name, but apparently you don't know me to well. If you did you would know that I have actually attended one game this season. The reason that I have not attended more game this season is due to that fact that my wife has been really sick. My wife has a blood clot in her heart. Which has caused us to spend 16 days this year in 3 different hospitals, 3 in Richlands 10 in Bristol and this past weekend 3 in Grundy. So before you open your mouth and talk about something you know nothing about you should stop and think first. I am a really big fan, and no I do not get to go to all the games, but I keep up with my school and can always tell you how they are doing, whats their record, what the score was to last nights game. I think this was very disrespectful for someone to open their mouth before thinking. Also thanks goes out to Lance for speaking up for me, I appreciate that man!
  17. Anyone know who is competing in the 3-point shootout at 6pm
  18. COACH OF THE YEAR: Hurley's Tester homegrown By Tim Hayes Published: January 21, 2011 » 0 Comments | Post a Comment vote nowBuzz up! HURLEY, Va. -- A couple of inches of snow covered the football field at Hurley High School earlier this week. Icicles hung from the protruding large slab of rock that neighbors the field and has given the unique stadium the moniker of “The Cliff.†But the remnants of a memorable season that concluded two months earlier still lingered. Signs urging on the Rebels were still on the fences surrounding the end zone and the positive vibe Hurley produced this past fall was easy to detect. Greg Tester, the Hurley boss and the Bristol Herald Courier’s 2010 prep football coach of the year, took a few moments to reflect. “We had a great season,†Tester said. “I was fortunate to have the group of ballplayers that I had. We had 11 in this senior class and they were all leaders. Most of them were four-year starters for me leading up to this point. … It was a pretty special group of players and to get this honor, you’ve got to have some good players. Another thing, I had a great coaching staff. Those guys don’t get a lot of credit, but we really worked well together and I had some good guys.†For Tester it was the culmination of an impressive turnaround. The team went 0-10 in his first season as head coach back in 2006 but steadily improved. The 2010 season featured seven wins, a berth in the Region D, Division 1 playoffs for the first time in five years and after a hard-fought playoff loss to J.I. Burton, some new respect for the program. Tester couldn’t be more proud of how things have transpired at his alma mater. “It’s got a special place in your heart, where you played ball at and where you went to school at,†Tester said. “Your hometown is always in your heart and that’s where you want to be at most of the time.†For the 32-year-old Tester, the road leading back home featured plenty of stops along the way. Tester’s travels Miami, Florida. Blacksburg, Virginia. Wise, Virginia. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Those are just some of the blips on Tester’s football roadmap. The starting point was Hurley, where he was a star for the Rebels and finished with 4,225 career rushing yards. Short and stocky, his speed was deceptive but he also showcased toughness. Just ask any linebacker that met him in the hole. His senior year in 1996, Hurley reached the regional finals with the hard-charging Tester leading the way. He had wanted to attend Virginia Tech, but ended up away from home. A long way from home. Tester ventured to Coral Gables, Fla., and made the team at the University of Miami – which featured future NFL stars Santana Moss and Edgerrin James – as a freshman walk-on. “I went down there for about a month and went through camp,†Tester said. “I was homesick, 17 hours away from home, I was a little culture shocked. But it was a good experience. … I journeyed back the next semester to Virginia Tech.†He took a redshirt year for the Hokies and then made another choice, a decision that would turn out to be rather wise. He transferred to the University of Virginia’s College at Wise and quickly became the workhorse in the backfield for the Highland Cavaliers. His return to Southwest Virginia was a triumphant one. “I don’t regret nothing that I did,†Tester said. “UVa.-Wise was a smaller school and it was a perfect fit for me.†After completing his career at UVa.-Wise, he played two seasons for the Myrtle Beach Stingrays of the National Indoor Football League. “After those two years, I knew I was done and I was going to have to do something to fill that void, because football’s a big part of my life,†Tester said. “I decided to give my old head coach, Wayne Hall, a call and he said he’d like for me to come and help out. I came back and after getting a teaching job and helping him out two or three years before he resigned and then I took over.†Winless to winners Things weren’t easy the first year Tester was in charge. That fall saw his overmatched team get handed losses by scores of 56-0, 50-0 and 58-6. The Rebels scored just 44 points all season. “I was kind of like, ‘what’d I get myself into here?’ †Tester said. “But I was an assistant two or three years before that and had lost a good group of seniors [from the 2005 team]. I knew what I was facing. I looked at some of these guys that were on the JV team and it was the seniors that I had this group. I knew they were going to be something special and they turned out to be.†The struggles were hard to take, but Tester accepted the challenge. It made him work that much harder. Tester became a sponge for information and sought out veteran coaches like Grundy’s Greg Rowe and Greg Mance of Richlands for advice. Plus his former coaches at UVa.-Wise – Bill Ramseyer and Bruce Wasem – were there for support. “I just try to take a little from everywhere and everybody that I have been around,†Tester said. “The sky is the limit for knowledge and you can never know too much and you have to learn to take advice and criticism to become a better coach.†A 3-7 season followed that first year debacle, then campaigns that ended with 6-4 and 7-3 records. In 2010, it all came together. The Rebels relied on a balanced attack with quarterback Austin Cooper emerging as a star with wide receiver Dustin Waynick his top target. William Rawlins was a talented running back and led the Rebels in rushing. Defensively, lineman John Layne was among the Black Diamond District’s best. Tester also gives credit to his coaching staff – Brandon Davis, Anthony Church, Travis Quinley, Chad Cooper and his former mentor, Hall – for the success. Plenty of Sundays were spent reviewing film and undergoing endless skull sessions for the upcoming foe. “He was here on Sundays for 10, 12 hours,†Waynick said. “We’d be like ‘come on, you need to take some time off.’ He’s a real good coach.†Added Cooper, the QB: “It’s fun [to play for Tester]. He was a star at Hurley when he was here. It’s good to have him coaching. He knows what he’s doing. It’s a great atmosphere with him and he gets into the game.†Intense, his players said, would be a good way to describe their coach. “He’s a real high-temperature guy,†Waynick said. “He gets us up before games.†Happy at home Tester admits it’s been hard to watch the film of Hurley’s final game – a 24-8 setback to J.I. Burton in the regional semifinals. “I’ve watched it one time and I’ve never stuck it back in the VCR again.†Tester said. “These kids have watched it. I’m just now getting over it.†Few people gave Hurley a chance against Burton, a team that had played in the state title game a year earlier. People cited the Rebels’ weak schedule, saying they only played teams fromKentucky and West Virginia that weren’t heavyweights. That all changed when Hurley raced out to an 8-0 lead and held an 8-6 advantage over the Raiders when they were about to breach the end zone again just before the first half. However, they were snuffed out at the goal line and Burton used a long touchdown pass to take a halftime lead and swing the momentum. “I think we put up a good fight,†Tester said. “I go back and I want to call two or three different plays, but you can’t do it. That’s the hard part about it.†While it was a heartbreaking loss, it couldn’t overshadow the success of Tester’s team. And he’s truly happy at his current job in a familiar place. “It’s just, you know, it’s home,†he said.

  21. Hurley escapes Twin Valley By LLOYD COMBS Bluefield Daily Telegraph The Bluefield Daily Telegraph Wed Jan 19, 2011, 05:00 AM EST PILGRIM’S KNOB, Va. — Twin Valley insists it’s intention was not to make it a physical game, but it turned into one. Hurley got a sheriff deputy’s escort out of the building as a precaution after an emotional — and physical — win over the Panthers. Austin Cooper scored 21 points to lead the Rebels to a 64-50 win in their Black Diamond District opener. The game was marred by 56 fouls, 34 by Twin Valley, 70 free throws, six players disqualified by personal fouls, plus two player ejections, and the removal of two fans from the stands. The Panthers a combined 17 first-half points from Joseph Fletcher and Daniel Hobbs and took a 30-27 halftime lead. Hurley did not respond well to the physical play of Twin Valley in the first half, but settled down in the second half behind Cooper and Dustin Waynick. That duo led two mini-runs early after the break and a 12-3 spurt late that gave the Rebels (10-1, 1-0) a 56-43 advantage after two free throws from Wesley Peck with 1:53 remaining. “â€In the second half we settled down and kept our composure, something we should have done in the first half,†Hurley coach Mark Cooper said. “They took us out of our game. We’ve just got to be more mentally tough when teams play us that way.†Waynick and Peck each finished with 14 points. Cooper contributed eight boards, six assists and four steals. Fletcher finished with 16 points and Hobbs 14 for the Panthers (5-5, 1-2). Twin Valley coach Brian Moore insists his intention was not to get overly physical as a way to get a reaction out of Hurley, or even as a means of disrupting its game. “We were just trying to survive,†Moore said. “We did not discuss being physical. Our only game plan was to control tempo and try and win a basketball game.â€
  22. Hurley road show continues By Tim Hayes Published: January 18, 2011 The wintry weather experienced in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee over the past few weeks has wreaked havoc on the prep basketball schedule. That's stating the obvious. For example, entering Tuesday the J.I. Burton High School girls basketball team has played just two games in the entire month of January. But perhaps nobody has been affected more by the tweaking of schedules, postponements of games and irregular routines than the Black Diamond District boys preseason favorite. Hurley has yet to play a game at home this season. Yep, it’s Jan. 18 and the Rebels have not hosted a foe in the confines of their tiny gym in Buchanan County. Pretty remarkable. Perhaps even more remarkable is that head coach Mark Cooper’s team has posted a 9-1 record away from home. It hasn’t been due to a weak schedule either as the Rebels have played in tournaments at Virginia High and in Pikeville, Ky. It’s not the only tournaments Hurley figures to be contending in this season. With a balanced attack, several top shooters and a dynamic post player in Dustin Waynick, Hurley has to be considered a serious favorite in the VHSL Group A, Division 1 classification. The Rebels could also be the latest successful team to come from Buchanan County, an underrated hoops hotbed. Council won a state title in 2001 and the Cobras were one of the state’s elite programs throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Twin Valley was the powerhouse a few years ago, reaching the state tournament a couple of times and finishing as state runner-up in 2006. Hurley now holds court and possesses the cohesiveness the two aforementioned teams displayed. Brothers Austin Cooper and Tyler Cooper can score (Austin scored 33 in a win over Chilhowie earlier this season) and Waynick is as smooth of a big man as Southwest Virginia has. Freshman guard Wesley Peck is pretty good as well. The Rebels barely missed qualifying for the state tourney last year – dropping a tight overtime decision to Appalachia in the regional semifinals – and have used that as motivation this winter. Hurley makes the short trip to Twin Valley tonight for a BDD clash. It will just be another test for a team that could aptly be dubbed the Road Warriors.

  24. Does any of the local papers around here put the top 10 scorers in swva and the top 10 from each district in their papers like they use to do a long time ago? I remember back in the late 90's when I was in school once a week the bristol paper would always have it. Does anyone know if they do that anymore?
