  1. Castlewood beat Honaker and John Battle beat Lebanon.  Those are two good wins for those schools.  I believe the Rebels have stepped up and shown they can win big games.  There will be tests in the season but I feel something special with this team.  The defense is playing good.  I've been more impressed with Dakota on defense this year.  Hes just been a man out there.  Hard hitting linebackers and speed in the secondary.  This team is special.  Its good to see our fellow Hurley Rebels are undefeated too.  Good luck to you guys and Go Rebels.

Their NG is worth the price of admission to watch. He is 5'4" and 135 pounds, he also plays blocking back for Humphrey. The Seymore kid can play on saturdays at the linebacker position.

  2. I would have to agree with you.  Coach Thomas was a much better coach.  He coached at Holston and did a good job.  At that time, PH football needed an identity and Coach Thomas really brought that to them.  Much like Matlock did for Holston.  Some of  the best years of Holston were the Matlock years.  I feel for our Cavs this year.  Coach Patterson is doing a good job with what he has.

Holston came in and punched PH in the mouth. The only reason that PH won was because of superior talent. Much the same way that Matlock won for those years. Patterson is a much more solid, fundamental insrtuctor of the game. If his team were loaded with the talent of earlier Holston teams, they would be great.

  3. I'm not as up on the Falcons as I have been in the past.  What I do know is that they have a stellar QB and a pretty good WR corp.  QB is going to be fun to watch.  Yes, they lost the RB Jordan but they have some other kids that are pretty good workhorse types with some decent speed.  Defense will be tough.  I don't think they lost a starter on the DL from last year. DB's are pretty good too.  They lost a CB and a tough MLB but the D will be an integral part of this years success. You might be saying "isn't the D an integral part of a teams success every year?".....and you would be right.  But, please remember who AHS had as a HC for the previous years before Reed got here last year.  Speaking of Reed...amazing how nobody spoke up about what a stellar job he did last year, especially after all the flack he took when he got hired.  lol.  Granted, his years prior to coming here weren't spectacular....but that just cements what I and many other folks had been saying for the previous 4 years...the talent is there but coaching sucked.

Its tough to rank the schools in this area because of the disparity in size/conference/district etc. I have zero problem with RHS being #1...but when/if AHS beats them then the story becomes "but, yeah, AHS is bigger..they SHOULD win...so you get no points for that".....I'm not taking away from RHS at all..I'm truly not. God knows they have been the winningest school around here for a few years and from what I read from you guys in the know, they seem to look good this year as well.  But, RHS gains ALOT more for beating AHS then AHS gains from beating RHS.

Anyway, best of luck to ALL teams this year!  Wishing all players good health and all travelers a safe journey!

I agree with most of what you have said Big O except that I think the QB is "good" but the WR corp is quite possibly the best and deepest group i have seen in SW Virginia in quite some time. The Tremendous O line losses will hurt, but if they can fill those big shoes the Falcons could be dominant.

  4. I have been going to the East practices. Michaels and Wright have looked very good at QB. Wagner and the kid from Honaker have looked good in the backfield. The O line looks very good and very athletic. The Thomas kid can be used anywhere. Defensively, the linebackers are impressive. The Simcox kid is an awesome placekicker. Overall I'm really impressed by this team they are truly all stars. I too am looking forward to the game.

  5. Congrats to the Falcons on a historic year.Very impressed with this group of seniors and their leadership. PH is the only team from our county left in the playoffs. Lets get behind them and support them (even Cavdaddy). They too have had a historic season, especially the win over Clintwood.

  6. I'm not attacking the kid and glad he has found a place where he can compete.  I never understood the transfer thing and it was a known fact in this county that they shopped around looking for a place to go because of the competition level at Abingdon.  Tried here but couldn't beat our Seth Thomas, so went to PH.  I apologize if stating the truth appears to be attacking, it is not.  I will say that if PH had not had four transfers (three from Abingdon) they would not be where they are today.  With that said, the Wright kid has helped them but for FALCON to elude or even hint that he dominated Holston the past two years is just plain wrong.  I included the stats from that game and said my peace.  Thank You

WOW, you really are a sad man resorting to outright falsehoods. If you knew the kid like BigO and I do you wouldn't even make those statements. Holston absolutely won last year, please re- read my post, but he and his team could have scored 60 on you this year. Please refrain from disrespecting a kid that works very hard at his job and has helped his team be successful.

  7. This is my point.  I've seen PH this year.  They do not have a great QB but do have a good running back.  If they didn't have the running back they wouldn't have beat the Cavs.  I just know how Clintwood is the standard in 1A football and PH can't match that.  One and done.

He may not be great but he has thrown for well over 1000 yds the last 2 years and definitely lit you guys up. PHs JV would have probably beaten you all. I know Abingdons JV would have. Mark Palmer is a very good person, he called off the dogs early. You really shouldn't disrespect kids that way. I understand that you are a sad man but the Cavs will be back.....one day.

  8. I kinda side with Counts here, how does a team with a "great QB", "one of the better tight ends in the area" a " Very, Very good MLB" and "3 or 4 really good receivers" lose to TW?

I know a lot can change over the course of a season but TW? really?

I can see how it would seem odd. The QB did not play that game and PH fumbled 7 times. All recovered by TW. They lost by 6.

  9. PH is very solid but not very deep. They have a great QB, RBs and 3 or 4 really good receivers. They also have one of the better tight ends in the area. Their O line is solid but not very deep. Defensively they are very sound. Very, Very good MLB. They are very balanced as far as run/pass. with both QB and RB well over 1000 yds. They might get overwhelmed but I could see them winning.

  10. I think not having him there for the day to day preparations hurts.  However, Holston is rebuilding now after a long successful stint under The Coach.  You can't argue with his success.  Two region titles.

i understand that you are proud of your boy and rightfully so, but the question is what games would the cavs have won if he was still HC?

  11. I was really hoping Northwood would've beat George Wythe.  Still a good story for that size of a school to have that record.  It was so nice to see Holston finally get the job done last year against George Wythe.  We miss that coach and team this year!

Sooo do you think that "THE COACH" would be doing better this year? I mean he is still in the press box with headphones on. How much better could he do if he were on the sidelines?

  12. I'm not saying that GW wasn't the better team, just not 29 points better. IMO.  No excuse, but I would have like to have seen them play Friday night.  It might have been a different outcome or it could have been more of the same. You are correct NW does not throw the ball well at all, it may not be a factor the rest of the season but come playoff time it will hurt them, just like last night.

GW earned the win, on D they got NW behind the chains and on O they moved the ball at will.  It was a good win for them.

I'm in complete agreement. I think if the game were played Friday night then the results would/could have been much different. Whos call was it to play last night?

  13. The game was closer than the score, GW has a good team with a good bit of speed.

I sat close to the Haysi contingent last night and from my perspective, the score was very indicative of the game. NW doesn't throw the ball well at all and don't have the means to play catch up. They are big and physical but GWs Dline and backers played very well.

  14. I hope that Tazewell wins this match up.  I am appalled of the lack of sportsmanship shown by Marion's Head Coach this past Friday Night.  Everyone knows its been a tough transition for our club this year.  We are struggling to find traction.  After having a comfortable lead and a score, Marion chose to onside kick it so they can get another score.  This to me is their head coach's way of padding their stats.  It was certainly uncalled for and I think they will get whats coming to them.  Another reason why they can't win in the playoffs.  Overrated stats from beating up smaller schools and a classless coach.  I certainly hope Tazewell wins this game.

WOW. Guess the chicken has come home to roost. Your boy "the coach" has done the same thing as often as he could.

  15. Grundy has a bunch of 9th and 10th graders this year...the McNutt kid #25 at RB is not the fastest but he is tough as can be and is fun to watch...and he's just a 9th grader.

Give these kids a couple of years and it's going to be interesting.

Mcnutt is a hold back . He is an elite wrestler and a very good RB.

  16.

Things were problematic from the start.  It began with channel 11, waking us up early and getting us hyped.  If we had played the game last Friday morning it would have been different. Everyone knows that Falcons hunt better in the morning. By the time our students left there, they had no voices to cheer on our Falcons.  The only cheering doneFriday night was from me and Southy.  I ask Southbound whats wrong with the student section, his dad replied its that dam news channel 11, they lost their voices this morning showboating for freaking tv!! Even though we were at home, it was like the referees thought we were playing away, several times I watched our sideline try to get in a fresh ball, only to be turned away?  Who wants to play with wet balls?? Finally,  its also obvious that Gate City had a team who were hold backs. We played some young kids.  Its well known that a 19 year old is stronger than a 16 year old!  I call upon the VHSL to investigate their birth cards because its a known fact that they hold back.  Anyways, thank goodness we have the braves, I mean the warriors this week.   They come in 1-1 just like us; however, we didn't lose to the candy canes new "baseball"team, they did!! Falcons recover and win putting us back on track for state!

Maybe its because those students had nothing to cheer for?  Its my understanding that Gate City really put it on your Falcons.  However, I must admit that I do enjoy reading you and your sidekick's excuses.  It really makes me chuckle.  One of the reasons I even look at the message board.

It could be worse. We could be two games into the season and already have 113 points scored on us. Must be cause THE COACH isn't there.
