  1. I'd say GC and Richlands will rule the area (as far as the 2A schools are concerned). Does Battle return their qb? If so, he'll be one of the best in the area, but I'm not sure who he'll throw to. VHS of course loses Brown, Kiser, the baseball players, and a few lineman, could be hard to bounce back & Ivan Moore is by no means a lock to start at qb again

Yes, Logan Honaker will be back next year for Battle (he's a junior this year). I know Coach Wright and his staff can/will build a good team out of what they have returning and coming up. Next season will also be a good test for VHS's new head coach to see how well he'll work in this situation.

  2. I have heard a couple of people talk about Battle's tougher schedule next year. Who do they play next year that they didn't play this year?

I didn't mean the schedule was changing. It'll be the same teams, but everyone seems to be getting better each year. I remember last year when Battle made it to the semi finals and everyone was talking about how down EVERYONE was except for Battle. Now, the teams that Battle has on their schedule are getting better (there were a lot of young teams last year and they're all getting experienced now while Battle will be fairly young next year).

  3. From what I heard at work Gate City is the team for next year. 8 returning offensive starters. 2 of the ones they are losing are OL. The other Is the Collier kid. He said they lose a few on defense but they have kids who are ready to fill those spots. Virginia High will be hurting, so will John Battle. There success is done. Union is losing what 22 seniors? Central is a joke, Lebanon won't be any good. Lee will be much improved if they don't fire Martin. I look for Gate City to reign supreme again. But gah it hurts to say...

I wouldn't say that VHS and JSB's success is done. I don't know about VHS's athletes, but Battle will be young next year and with competition getting much better, it'll be a tough season. But the younger kids Battle has played with a lot of heart this season and I think they can win some games and get back to a good winning season the next year (I'm not ruling out a winning season this coming year, but like I said, it'll be tough).

  4. Denton did you see Essex last year. I really think if Fort does not turn the ball over- I think they win.

Posted this in the updates thread when I meant for it to go here:

The Fort/Essex game reminds me of the Battle/Essex game last year. We brought so many fans that they had to move half their home side bleachers to the visitor side and our fans filled the stands over an hour before kickoff while Essex fans only really started filing in literally 20 minutes before kickoff. Refs were pretty bad last year too. Essex had the ball first and on the first play threw an interception, but the refs threw a flag after the play was done and called Essex on false start and gave them the ball back. I'm not really surprised if this game is going the same way (and it's a shame because Essex has a really good team to begin with). The fans were super nice though...I have to give them credit for that.

Essex had some really good athletes last year and a lot of speed. Battle's defense was super aggressive last year and won some games, but couldn't stop Essex (we did have some key injuries both before and during that game, but without that it still might have been a loss....they were tough and it didn't help that the refs were all from the surrounding area, as the game's announcer told me).

  5. I could have sworn that there was some kind of talk about a football game in this thread somewhere.......VHS @ Richlands wasn't it? lol. My prediction is that this game will come down to the 4th quarter. IMO it'll be close and I could honestly see either team pulling it out, but I'll go with Richlands in this one. Home field advantage and a lot of recent experience with the playoff atmosphere. I think VHS has a good coach and good athletes (the Gretna game shows what they are capable of) but the Bearcats need a few years UNDER THE SAME COACH before they get where they need to be. Talent is great, but experience goes a long way from the coaches to the players.

  6. Yes, it's the one at exit 5. I've chuckled every time i've seen it but i wonder why a business owner would want to alienate the folks at VHS. Not good business IMO.

You're right that it's not good for business being so close to VHS and doing that. I've known some of the people that work/worked there and lots of the people that are regulars there (that either buy there gas/tobacco/alcohol there regularly or just stop by to hang out) and it seems to me like they have more connection to Battle than VHS despite their location. That could be the reason.

  7. haven't been to a reg. season game in ages.... anyone pay attention to how much time is left on the clock when the band leaves the field?

Anyoe ever see a DoG penalty to start the 2nd ha;f because h/t lasted too long?

Battle got a delay of game penalty once not too long ago because the band's halftime show was too long. When we went to Lee this year, there band ran out the clock for pregame entrance and halftime and the refs added time to the clock...though it was there senior night, so there was a lot going on.

  8. What is up with Battle? I know losing those kids meant a lot, but this is extreme...

Finally on the board. XP no good. GC is just owning the game on both sides of the ball. Our line play is not very good at all so far. Hopefully we'll figure something out soon.

  9. Matney will be back (was cleared just before the Union game last week from what I was told) and I'd say Harlow will be back considering that he was in full pads the whole game last week after his injury (though if he's back, I don't know if he'll be 100% or not). Obviously the Blaylock boys are done for the season. I don't know about anyone else at the moment.

  10. The VHSL is still sorting it out. Something to do with a team from NC that one of them played and the way NC counts their wins and loses.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. How is it a problem specifically? The NC team should be designated in a VA group by size (count them as 1A, 2A, etc.), then get the points for playing them and points for the win (if the VA team won....I don't know who beat who), then rider points based on the NC team's W/L record. Should be simple, right?
