Cburg won the overall team score with 292 points, Grundy in second with 96.5 points and Turner Ashby 3rd with 92.5 points. Cburg had 6 champions, Grundy had 0. Only one Tazewell County wrestler placed and that was Travis Walk from Graham 6th at 119.

wow....major beatdown...

still nothing compared to the years of grundy having 9 champions...

Grundy is not going to be able to knock C-burg off this pedestal until Dresser quits bringing kids in from the whole east coast...

yeah...they will never match what Grundy has done either...and at least Grundy's stuff was done grass roots with hometown boys...something to be proud of.

I still say the best for that team is the next two years...they have had a lot of young kids the last two years getting experience.

We can sit here and harp and moan all we want, but if you look at it, Grundy has shot themselve's in the foot. They have made the competition in VA. have to catch up with them. The same thing has happened in the NCAA with Iowa. We can complain about all of the transfers C-burg has got, but if you look at it, this is simply the only way Dresser can get it done. He had to figure out some way of beating Grundy, didn't he? And he has. Christiansburg was a hometown grassroots team too, up until the year they won their first state title, but the kids that they recruited were from around that area, not 1,000 miles away. It's a load of crap how things are happening, but the competition will continue to get better, teams will have to figure out some way of knocking off C-burg too! wink.gif

well in Grundy's run...you had how many state champs roll out of about a 20 mile square area? No one will ever match what the wrestling progam did from about 1986 - 2000 in any sport...they re-wrote almost every major record along the way.

Grundy's good days are not over, I still think the next two years look good...lots of young kids getting a lot of experience along the way.

c-burg will match that record if dresser stays there.....Grundy had a great accomplishment...but, who was behind that record......DRESSER.....they have hometown boys too up at C-BURG.....Dresser made Grundy wrestling waht it was.....He's gone and thats why it is what it is.......Fiser cant even compare.........

C'burg has around 3 hometown boys outta 14...wouldn't exactly call that born and bred...

C-burg has people from the whole east coast...and he still couldn't break Grundy's record...

Dresser will be there 5 more years max....he'll be coaching at a college somewhere...where recruiting is legal

actually I think he came in after the program was established didn't he?

I'm pretty sure Jim Wayne Childress, Red Robertson, WJ Caudill, and a few others played a big role in making the machine that Dresser eventually took over.

you're right..the program was already established...and beginning to do well with the backing of Mr. Robertson..

however Dresser's ability did take us to another level

dresser pushed the kids to limits they have not seen since he left. the work ethic was unreal. no one missed morning runs, no one missed practice, no one told him what class they would wrestle. he did not take an eighth grader and fill him full of bull [censored] about being a four time state champ, but he needed to be in the gym instead of football. he pushed the kids towards football and followed them to the games. dresser was a people coach. unlike the coach now, who has a personality of a dead man. the only title fiser won was with what was left from dreeser's era.

I am not too involved in the wrestling circles, if you couldn't tell. From what I understand Dresser used to be the coach at Grundy but left for C-burg. Why?

[/ QUOTE ]

Dresser initially left Grundy to go back to Iowa where he was originally from. His wife is originally from C-burg, and they moved back around 98 to C-burg, and he took the coaching job. He didn't really start recruiting until they first won state. And it has just gotten worse. Especially when the Minton kid moved from Abingdon to C-burg, to wrestle. If Dresser stays, you will continue to see that.

I agree with olewave also, Dresser was at almost all little league matches, and he was a great people person. The practices were more technical back then, as they are focused more towards conditioning right now. If you think they don't learn technique under Dresser, look at Jantzen Minton from Abingdon. He finished in the top 3 at Region, and Morgan Owens beat him in an open tournament last year by a tech fall, and he turns around and finishes 3rd in the state.

Rebelman, why do you say that Fiser doesn't even compare? Fiser is a great coach, and a great guy, and we would have won state this year if not for The kids out of Jersey and California, Texas, Ohio, places like that. C-burg has 4 guys on the team that wrestled on the middle school team. Timmy Miles the 125 pounder, Matt Epperly the 145 pounder, Andrew Hoffer the 160 pounder and Stuart Vyule the Heavyweight. And Epperly is from Radford. So how do you call a team with 3 guys that are from Christiansburg a hometown team?

In all honesty, his move to Christiansburg was pretty legitimate. That is just what seemed was his best option after his short stint back in Iowa. But recruiting for high school sports, that ain't right. He needs to work with he's got and not try to make himself look like the coach of the century. What he did at Grundy is amazing and I hope Grundy is able to continue their dynasty without Dresser and with their new coach.
