Tide will play Hokies in Ga. Dome next season

From staff reports

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Atlanta will be awash in maroon and crimson on Sept. 5.

The crimson and cream of Alabama will play the maroon and orange of Virginia Tech in the second Chick-fil-A College Kickoff at the Georgia Dome, according to Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president. The game will be televised by ABC or ESPN.

“We hope to have a white-out on one side of the dome and a crimson-out on the other,†Stokan joked.

He said that Chick-fil-A is trying to create a BCS-type situation to kick off each college football season.

“We think next year that both teams will be preseason top 10,†Stokan said.

This will be the Crimson Tide’s second appearance in the Kickoff. Alabama landed on the front of Sports Illustrated after it stunned Clemson, 34-10, in last year’s inaugural game. The Tide used that win to eventually rise to No. 1, which it held onto until losing to Florida in the SEC championship game. Alabama, No. 4 in the BCS standings, will play Utah in the Sugar Bowl.

No. 19 Virginia Tech defeated Boston College in the ACC Championship game, and will play Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl.

Tickets will be split evenly between the two teams and the game and surrounding events will be managed by the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

According to the Atlanta Sports Council, the 2008 Kickoff drew a sold-out crowd of 70,097 and was viewed in more than four million households. The pre-game fan activities were attended by more than 22,000 fans and the event created an economic impact of $29.1 million for Atlanta and Georgia including $1.2 million in direct tax revenues.

Stokan said this year’s game will have an estimated impact of between $30-35 million.

“Atlanta is the heartbeat of college football with the sold-out Kickoff game, the SEC championship, and the Chick-fil-A Bowl,†Stokan said.

Bama by four touchdowns! Despite being a greedy sucker, $aban is one heck of a coach and will return a TON of young talent from an already exceptional team.

big difference look what happened to Lsu with avg qb.....better to lose early than later though...ha ha

Alabama BIG in this one. Star Jackson takes over the reigns at starting quarterback, and the Jackson/Jones era begins in T-Town. Bama by 3, 4 scores.

Yeah, either Star Jackson or another guy named Greg McElroy. Here's some numbers for you. In his one year as a starter in high school, he threw for 4,687 yards with 56 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. The reason he didn't start earlier was because he played back up to some guy named Chase Daniel at Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas. Gentlemen, this is going to be the beginning of another Texas slinger tearing up college football, just like Daniel, McCoy, Harrell, etc. have done the past couple of years. So here's to the beginning of the McElroy/Jones era in Tuscaloosa. Bama by 3, 4 scores sounds about right.

McElroy will most likely be the starter, and in my opinion could have started the last two seasons. Star Jackson was red-shirted, and looks like he will be holding the clipboard in 2009. A.J. McCarron, a highly touted recruit, will be coming to Bama as well. This guy is 6'4 and 189 lbs., has a great arm and throws with accuracy. With the two other backups already in place, the QB position looks promising for the Tide. The future looks exciting.

I see Star and McElroy competing with each other for the job. We all know Saban loves the mobile quarterbacks, and with the spread option offense growing enormously in popularity, I can see Saban adapting it and using Star to his abilities. Knowing Star, of course I want him to win the starting position, but I know he will have to earn it. Saban loves the kid, and with him being just a redshirt freshman when next season rolls around, he will get his chance to shine at Alabama.

Stiney will put in a game plan that will bore Bama's defense to sleep, then hopefully we will sneak in a score or two so Beamer can talk about the great coaching job Stinkspring did.

Unfortunately, Tide will roll on VT.
