Richlands shocked an overflow crowd at Legion Field last week by switching from the spread offense to the I formation at halftime. The move paid dividends in the form of a 31-0 victory over Gate City. …Jeremy McGlothlin, Zack Frazier and Skyler Bunker are leaders for the aggressive Richlands defense …. Honaker managed just 62 yards rushing against the rugged Lebanon defense last week, but the Tigers passed for 110 yards behind quarterback Chaz Miller. … Richlands defensive end Will Lowe will cause nightmares for Honaker fans, while Devon Johnson finds the end zone often.

Call it the battle of the Bluff City bashers: Both the Vikings and Pioneers enjoyed easy wins over Sullivan East in their only games so far in 2010. ... Tennessee High jumped out to a 28-0 lead by halftime in last year’s laugher as since-graduated quarterback Taylor Harmon picked apart the Crockett secondary for 141 passing yards in the game. ... Both teams ran the ball with ease against the Patriots with the Vikings churning out 258 rushing yards, while the Pioneers had 290 yards on the ground in their season-opener.

Last meeting: J.I. Burton 28, Appalachia 12 (Sept. 4, 2009 in Norton, Va.)

 

These two teams playing in Week 2 has become a tradition and there have been several classic games between the LPD rivals. … Burton had no trouble with Rye Cove in a 48-0 last week. Sophomore quarterback Tanner Crowder threw five first-half touchdown passes to lead the Raiders. … Tyler Barker (27 carries, 190 yards, two touchdowns) led Appalachia to a 22-7 victory over Castlewood as the Bulldogs overcame a 7-0 halftime deficit. … Burton’s speed will be too much for most teams to contain this season, including Appalachia.

Trey and Gavan Meade combined for three touchdowns and 305 total yards from the line of scrimmage. … Haysi had a bye week last Friday. … Clintwood has dominated this Dickenson County rivalry game as a of late and that should continue tonight.

East Ridge, Ky., at No. 6 Grundy

 

Last meeting: Grundy 26, East Ridge 0 (Sept. 4, 2009 at East Ridge, Ky.)

 

Tyler Berglowe rushed for 87 yards and scored three times last week as Grundy cruised past Twin Valley, 51-6. John Kelly added three touchdown passes. …East Ridge also opened in style, rolling to a 31-6 win over Shelby Valley in the Pike County Bowl. …. Patrick Casey collected 282 of the 416 total rushing yards for East Ridge. …. Grundy rushed for 200 yards in this game last year, as Berglowe collected 81.

Both of these traditional powers experienced rough opening weeks. …With senior quarterback Dusty Clark sidelined due to an injury, Gate City managed just 80 total yards against Richlands. … Tazewell was held to 152 yards in a 28-0 loss at George Wythe. …GC rushed for 433 yards in this game last year, as Joseph Vaughn accounted for four touchdowns. …. As Clark and Vaughn continue to heal from their medical woes, watch for the Blue Devils to rely on their deep and aggressive defense.

Virginia High accumulated 404 total yards last week against Sullivan Central despite breaking in a new backfield. Quarterback Charlieo Bradley collected 248 of those yards. …. Behind the power-running of Jeremiah Denton, John Battle piled up 364 yards en route to a 35-0 dusting of Twin Springs. … The last win for Battle in this series came in 1998, when the Trojans posted a 48-14 decision. VHS led 42-14 against Battle at halftime last year. … The team speed of VHS has usually made the difference, and that will be the case again tonight.

Last week’s season opener was not kind to either team. Coeburn managed just four first downs and had four turnovers in a 42-6 setback to Clintwood. Meanwhile, Ervinton was at the receiving end of a 40-0 beatdown by Hurley. … Coeburn’s Tyler Courtney scored the team’s lone touchdown pass against Clintwood and has earned rave reviews for his athleticism throughout the preseason. … Jason Edwards filled in for Ervinton head coach Ethan Owens in last week’s game. Owens was out with an unspecified injury. … A long season for Ervinton could get longer tonight.

Both of these teams played well last week — for a half. Castlewood led Appalachia 7-0 at halftime, but fell apart in the final 24 minutes and lost 22-7. Thomas Walker trailed J.J. Kelly 14-13 at the break but eventually dropped a 36-19 decision. … Quarterback Ryan McCall was solid last week for Castlewood, throwing a touchdown pass. … Castlewood hopes tonight’s game doesn’t resemble last season’s lopsided affair. TW took advantage of four turnovers and rushed for 402 yards en route to the win. … Cody Cain was a playmaker last week for Thomas Walker and will likely continue to be a catalyst for the Pioneers.

J.J. Kelly at Pound

 

Last meeting: J.J. Kelly 47, Pound 0 (Sept. 4, 2009 in Wise, Va.)

 

Not much has changed in Wise — J.J. Kelly still loves to dominate teams on the ground. The Indians racked up 325 rushing yards in a 36-19 victory over Thomas Walker last week. Brandon Osborne and Tyler Ramsey were the top ball carriers in the win. … Pound head coach Jason Hicks lost his debut as head coach last Saturday in a loss to Morgan County (Ky.). … With the solid run game and a defense led by the likes of Justin McGinnis and Jeremiah Cooke, Kelly will be a playoff contender once again.

Harlan County, Ky. at Lee

 

Last meeting: Harlan County 44, Lee 21 (Sept. 4, 2009 in Harlan, Ky.)

 

Lee managed just 143 total yards en route to a 28-8 loss to Powell Valley last week, but the Generals trailed just 8-0 at halftime. … Tyler Graham of Lee is the player to watch. The 5-11, 172-pound junior has nifty moves at running back and can be a big hitter on defense. Sophomore defensive end Austin Snodgrass paced the Lee defense last week with 10 tackles. …. Harlan County opened the season last week with a 40-7 loss to Pulaski County, Ky., in the Ray Correll Bowl in Somerset, Ky. …. Harlan rushed for 414 yards against Lee last year, as Graham as held to seven yards on 15 carries.

Powell Valley at Lebanon

 

Last meeting: Lebanon 27, Powell Valley 7 (Sept. 4, 2009 in Big Stone Gap, Va.)

 

The new-look Lebanon offense was impressive last week, as the Pioneers posted a 20-7 win at Russell County rival Honaker. ... First-year quarterback Nick Smith shined in the option game, while senior fullback Justin Adams powered for 136 yards. … Powell Valley rushed for 174 yards in a 28-8 victory at Lee. Three PV players rushed for at least 42 yards, including 5-8 junior Dalton Tackett with 59 yards. ... Lebanon controlled the line in this matchup last year, and look for more of the same.

Patrick Henry at Abingdon

This is the season opener for Abingdon, which returns 10 seniors and 11 starters. … Running back Zac Crosswhite led AHS in this game last season, rushing for 145 yards on just 15 carries. Crosswhite returns for this WashingtonCounty rivalry along with senior quarterback Jake Hess. …. Patrick Henry allowed 355 yards of total offense last week en route to a 34-14 non-district loss to Bland. … Look for AHS senior linebacker Ben Coleman to star.

Both of these teams are coming off heart-breaking losses at home. …Carroll County fell 17-14 to Bassett, when the Bengals connected on a 26-yard field goal with three seconds left. …. Patrick Country suffered a 26-21 loss when North Stokes, N.C. scored in the final minute on a 15-yard pass . …. The star for Patrick County is experienced quarterback Jacob Reynolds, who threw for one score and passed for two last week. …Ulysses Moreno led CarrollCounty against Bassett with 59 yards rushing, while Logan Hodges supplied nine tackles.

Graham at Cave Spring

Cave Spring quarterback Josh Woodrum scored four touchdowns in this game last year, as the Knights accumulated 360 total yards. … Woodrum passed for 168 yards last week in a 41-21 win over Staunton River. Woodrum and safety Michael Cole are both Division 1 recruits. … Graham allowed 430 yards in a 48-0 loss to rival Bluefield last week. … The G-Men will host Virginia High on Sept. 17.

Marion at Northwood

These Smyth County rivals are not only looking for their first win, but also their first points of the season. … Marion managed just 152 yards of total offense and did not complete a pass in 14-0 loss to Chilhowie last Friday, while Northwood totaled just 121 total offensive yards in a 45-0 shellacking at the hands of Galax. … Marion’s roster is full of sophomores and tailback Ethan Richardson, a 10th grader, is a rising star.

St. Paul at Hurley

 

Last meeting: Hurley 28, St. Paul 26 (Sept. 3, 2009 in St. Paul, Va.)

 

This matchup produced one of the most exciting games in Southwest Virginia last season. St. Paul held a 20-6 halftime lead, only to see Hurley rally for the win. … St. Paul posted a 34-19 non-district win over Holston last Friday, the Deacons’ first opening night win in 10 years. … Hurley was impressive in dismantling Ervinton, 40-0, as quarterback Austin Cooper threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another score.

Twin Springs at Holston

 

Last meeting: Holston 35, Twin Springs 12 (Sept. 4, 2009 in Nickelsville, Va.)

 

Holston was hit hard by graduation and it showed last week in a 34-19 setback to St. Paul. … Tyler Harris (77 rushing yards) and Cody Hawkins (two touchdown passes) were bright spots for the Cavaliers, who yielded 14 third-quarter points and never recovered. … Twin Springs had a terrible performance in Week 1, suffering a 35-0 loss at the hands of John Battle.

Grayson County at Chilhowie

 

Last meeting: Chilhowie 32, Grayson County 20 (Sept. 4, 2009 in Independence, Va.)

 

Defense was Chilhowie’s calling card in a 14-0 win over Marion last week as Daniel Ashby, Reid Sturgill and Cody Harris were among the stars of the stingy unit. … Chilhowie running back Brett Johnson was shaken up on a hit in the third quarter, but is good to go for tonight’s game. … Grayson County opened the season with a 34-14 victory over Alleghany (N.C.) last week. The Blue Devils are led by quarterback Ethan Hash and running back Xavier Rodriguez.

Rural Retreat at Floyd County

 

Last meeting: Floyd Count 42, Rural Retreat 15 (Sept. 4, 2009 in Rural Retreat, Va.)

 

How will these teams respond after tough losses? Floyd County suffered a 40-12 setback to Christiansburg, while Rural Retreat was handed a 41-25 loss by Wythe County foe Fort Chiswell. … Rural Retreat did have some positive things go its way. Four different players scored for the Indians and Travis Anderson rushed for 109 yards. … Floyd County is one of the toughest places to play in Region C and Rural Retreat will find that out tonight.

Then again it reinforces my point, #1 one beats #2.........?

 

The only reason I can see GC dropping that far was because it was a shutout. Had it been a close game I'm fairly sure GC would be in the 3-5 range. Just my oppinion though.
