This is the second or third year that it has been single elimination. No more pool play with four games guaranteed.

That was part of the prestige and fun of the Coppinger: the round-robin format and 7th-5th-3rd games.

Playing on a team that constantly was in the 5th-7th games, it made it worthwhile.

Of course, I can see the reasons for the switch. It rains like monsoon season in the jungles during this thing.

This is a different format than in years' past, isn't it?

Pool play sucked. This is like the original format except for the number of teams...used to be 32+ teams EVERY YEAR. It was a great tournament back in the 70s-early 80s...lots of teams that would never have the opportunity to play each other squared off on the diamond. And there used to be some REALLY good baseball, too.

PREP ROUNDUP: Richlands wins Coppinger

By BHC Sports Desk

Published: April 24, 2011

Tournament MVP Bradley Strong drove in a run during the sixth inning and James Patton tossed a three-hitter as Richlands posted a 6-2 win over Princeton (W.Va.) to win the Coppinger Invitational baseball tournament on Saturday at Bowen Field in Bluefield.

Richlands (8-2) won its fourth Coppinger title and first since 2008.

Patton struck out 10 in his second straight dominant outing, while Zach Yates connected for a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

The Blue Tornado had already posted a 10-8 victory over Nicholas County (W.Va.) earlier Saturday afternoon thanks to four RBIs from Strong.

Princeton advanced to the finals with a 10-2 win over Tazewell.

Along with Bradley Strong, Patton, Reece Strong (Richlands), Zak Wasilewski (Tazewell), Ryan Hankins (Tazewell), Cody Justus (Grundy) and Rhett Sturgill (Chilhowie) were among the local players selected to the All-Coppinger team.
