tbgfan 856 Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 http://www.swvatoday.com/news/article/sarver_resigns_as_bland_county_tennis_coach/9936/ Sarver resigns as Bland County tennis coach By Staff Published: April 22, 2011 By JERRY SCOTT/Correspondent At this time a year ago, Bland County’s girls’ tennis team was in a run toward what turned out to be the first state tournament berth in the history of either Bland or Rocky Gap high schools. Along with that, then-sophomore Grace Sarver was volleying to defend her 2009 Group A singles title and, with doubles partner Kirby Mustard in tow, the two were searching for back-to-back state doubles titles. When the final serve was served, the final volley volleyed, and the final points of 2010 scored, the team was Group A runner-up with Sarver again Group A singles champion and she and Mustard again champions in doubles competition. The 2011 season would be one of rebuilding somewhat after Mustard, Kayla Dillow and Erika Duncan graduated, but there was some optimism as far as Sarver again challenging for state individual championships. It appears that none of that will happen now as Bears’ coach Mark Sarver has resigned his post for undisclosed reasons, and the team has dissolved after having played and split just two matches this season. Bland High School Principal Temple Musser confirmed on April 13 that Sarver had resigned as coach of the Bears. He also confirmed that after Sarver resigned, Grace Sarver informed him that she no longer wished to play tennis at Bland High School. Following that, Bland County athletic director Anthony Kidd spoke with the remaining four members of the team, students from Rocky Gap High School, and they, too, indicated that they would no longer be playing. “I can confirm that Mr. Sarver is no longer the girls’ tennis coach for Bland County,†Musser said. “I cannot comment as to the reason for his resignation, as it is a personnel matter. I also had a long conversation with Miss Grace and she told me that she would no longer be playing tennis here.†Mark Sarver was also a physical education teacher at Rocky Gap High School, and Musser said he didn’t know if the resignation was a combination of the two positions or just the coaching position. On April 19, the School Board accepted his resignation from both jobs. Musser indicated that an interim coach had been lined up to finish out the season had the girls decided to keep playing. At this point, all opponents have been notified that Bland County no longer has a girls’ tennis squad and all matches have been cancelled. Should the players have a change of heart in a reasonable amount of time, Musser felt confident that the district matches could still be rescheduled but that would have to be done in a matter of days and not weeks. Mark Sarver had no comment on the matter nor did Rocky Gap Principal Joe Makalandra. A call to Bland County Superintendent of Schools Kyle Rhodes was not returned. deuceswild 15 Report Share Posted April 25, 2011 So the rest of the team ends up quitting because the coach quits to take a one-on-one opportunity to help his daughter. Kinda crappy for the rest of the team, right?

deuceswild 15 Report Share Posted April 29, 2011 I don't know that they had a coach. I thought Sarver was the coach and his daughter played for him. Or maybe I can't read good.
