Mickelson committs to Greenbrier Classic

Not a surprise...Phil loves to gamble and The Greenbrier has that. I'm sure he has received a "house credit" at the Casino in return for his participation in the event...

Glad to hear it. A true threat to shoot -30 on that course.

Mickelson won't shoot -30 this summer. The renovations to Old White (i.e. added length to the course and redesigned greens) should increase the course stroke average by a couple shots. The tournament is meant for scoring and fits the bill of a mid-tier Fed Ex Cup event that it is.

Tom Watson is slated to play in the field too and I can't wait. He's always been one of my favorites. Already counting down the days to the Classic!

Hopefully the renovations will make the scores lower this year. I like seeing high scores, but last year was simply embarrassing. Weren't something like 3 of the Top 5 rounds on tour last year shot in this tournament?

I agree that I would like to see the scores get a little closer to par, but honestly I believe that the statistics on the overall easiness of Old White are skewed a little bit. I can't deny the fact that the course record was challenged/broken on every day of the tournament, but at the same time I attest that to a lack of tradition. The course record was on a platter last year because it was untouched in previous years.

I watched Appleby shoot 59 last year in person and there is not a chance that he could've gone any lower. He hit every shot perfectly and his putter was on fire. It was the perfect storm. If you look at the overall winning score of -22 (with a course record -13 par) it averages to approximately a 5.5-under par round per day which is impressive to the commoner, but not unheard of by the best golfers in the world.

Overall, like I said I believe that the course should play a couple shots harder. They completely renovated the greens to make them faster and a bit more challenging to the field. They are also adding yardage to places where they're able to by building new tee boxes. Take those factors into account, narrow the fairways, and grow the rough a little bit longer and you should have a pretty good Greenbrier Classic with a winning score of about -18 par if those changes can make the course play an average of a shot harder per day.

Man, again, I'm excited! :D

I think you bring up a good point about the lack of tradition. It's like unleashing a DCI band on a high school band festival, LOL. It's a good thing to see the course being altered to accommodate the tournament; it makes a more challenging play for everyone, from the pros to the club members.

I'll enjoy watching the event. I can't break 100 on my best day (worst fade ever off the tee), and I'm amazed at the professionals who can crack 70 nearly every time out.

Tom Watson is The Greenbrier’s Golf Professional Emeritus...has been for a while. That relationship is why he's playing in the Tournament.

A few years ago when we held the BRJGT Tournament at The Greenbrier, Mr. Watson was there talking with the kids...a memorable day for a lot of youngsters...

Eh, semantics. My golf game still stinks because I can't keep the ball out of the trees. I can absolutely kill the ball, but it goes 200 yards down and 100 yards right.

I had the same problem until this year. I got a new driver, with a stiffer shaft...no slice at all now. I driving the ball further than I ever have and straight as an arrow!

Now my irons are all to hell, and they used to be the better part of my game...go figure.

That gives me a little hope to hear. I need to go get fitted for a driver soon, especially the field I'm in now.

My irons aren't bad, and I typically do well with a putter. I just can't drive, LOL.

I just changed my iron set from Henry Griffin steel shaft over to Callaway graphite shaft. My iron play had been going down hill for the last couple of years so I hope this change will improve my play. I also still play with a Big Bertha driver and 3 wood that I've had for 15 years. I'm not looking to change those anytime soon.

Yeah I know. The reason he wasn't at the Classic last year was because it fell on the same weekend as the Senior British Open. There is a huge wall case dedicated to Watson outside The Greenbrier pro shop that has all kinds of neat memorabilia like his old Ryder Cup bags, etc. Really cool.

Watson is one of my all-time favorite golfers and the book "Caddie for Life" about Bruce Edwards, his former caddie, who died from ALS is one of my favorite books. GMan, I attribute much of my love for of the "old school" golfers like Watson and Couples to an aunt! :)

It was actually -11 par, Old White is par 70, and on holes 13 and 14 he missed putts inside of 15 feet that could have just went in as they stayed out. But overall I felt like it was a good tournament for its first year, the scoring may have been low but it made for plenty of excitement. I would really consider the it to be an embarrassment.

You're right, my mistake. Old White is par 70, I was typing from memory last night after a long day and just went with my first instinct of par 72.

I don't really understand your last sentence. Are you saying that the Greenbrier Classic was an embarrassment? To who/what? As I said earlier, the Classic fits the bill of a middle of the road PGA/Fed-Ex Cup event. PGA winners put up very low scores on notable courses/events across the country all season long. Take a look at some of last year's scores in comparison to the Classic's:

Bob Hope Classic @ PGA West (-30; B. Haas)

Northern Trust Open @ Riviera (-16; Stricker)

WGC-CA @ Doral (-18; Els)

Zurich Classic @ TPC Louisiana (-18; J. Bohn)

Wells Fargo Championship @ Quail Hollow (-15; McIlroy)

TPC @ Sawgrass (-16; Clark)

Crowne Plaza @ Colonial (-21; Z. Johnson)

The Memorial @ Muirfield (-18; J. Rose)

John Deere Classic @ TPC Deere Run (-26; Stricker)

Wyndham Championship @ Sedgefield (-20; Atwal)

Deutsche Bank Championship @ TPC Boston (-22; C. Hoffman)

No, these events aren't the Masters or US Open and the courses aren't Augusta National or St. Andrews, but there are still some respected tournaments on the list (WGC, The Memorial, TPC) at some very good golf courses (Quail Hollow, Colonial, a couple TPC courses). If the Classic can increase the course difficulty by a couple strokes then I'd wager the winner to shoot around the 16-20-under par total.

Not saying you do or don't respect the tournament, but more people in general need to realize that The Greenbrier Classic can be one of the better events on the tour schedule for what it created and seeks to accomplish. A middle-to-upper echelon Fed-Ex Cup event.

This will help: Just released into the news today

New golf ball flies straight off the tee … illegally!

By Jay Busbee

If you're like me, your tee shots have a tendency to shoot into the woods faster than a scalded dog. Fear not, friends, there's a cure for all of us, as the New York Times tells us: a new, only-flies-straight golf ball! There's just one small catch ...

Presenting the Polara Golf Ball, the ball which is guaranteed to fly straight. It does so because of two different pattern of dimples: a shallow set around the ball's equator, and deeper dimples along the poles. The combination of those keeps the ball flying lower and straighter. It's like magic! The price for these super balls is around $30.

But what's the catch? Ah, there's always a catch. The pattern is illegal according to the USGA, so you can't use it in any sanctioned competition in the United States. And while you could use it in your local scramble, you've got to decide whether it's worth getting caught. But the balls fly so straight!

"It's for the other golfers, the ones who rarely hit it straight," says Dave Felker, a Polara executive with experience engineering Callaway golf balls. "It's for people who want to be embarrassed less, play faster and enjoy it more. I respect the USGA, they help identify the best golfers in the world, but what about the rest of us?"

But Dick Rugge, the USGA's technical director, doesn't much care for that line of reasoning. "For the last 15 years, advances in conforming club and ball technologies have made it easier to play," Rugge said. "So we've already had a 15-year experiment on this make-it-easier logic. And what have been the results? Participation has not gone up. So we're not going to dumb it down. You know the easiest way to get the ball in the middle of the fairway? Walk down there and place it with your hand. Who are you kidding?" (Wait, you can do that? Man, that would totally change my game.)

All right, your turn. The Polara sounds wonderful, but is it something you'd use? Do you worry about the USGA-sanctioned equipment, or will you trick up your game with whatever you can get your hands on?

Wow, this is sweet...

I might actually buy a set of these, just to see what they'd be like. If they could cure my slice, they can cure anything.

Tour Edge Exotics XLD 15* with a S-flex shaft.

I think the combination of the higher degree and the stiffer shaft really did something for me. Before I got the driver I was only hitting my 3-wood off the tee, because my slice was THAT bad. My 3-wood had a steel shaft and my driver had a graphite shaft...but I'm not sure of the flex of the graphite. So I think this new driver hits more like my 3-wood, but the distance is great. I have hit several straight drives close to 300yds, and that is a HUGE improvement for me.

I too switched to a 14 degree driver and no longer slice. (Big left to right curve.) I do still am prone on certain holes to yank a shot off the tee dead right, but with no curve at all. In my case, it is like a right handed batter getting his hands out in front to hit the ball the opposite way.

Loft is your friend...14*/15* will go much straighter (and further) than 8*/9* drivers for the average player.

One time, an old golf pro I used to work for had a hack golfer come in his golf shop one day and say "Pro, I can't hit my driver."

The old golf Pro looked at the guy and asked, "What driver are you hitting?"

The guy replies, "Pro, its the one I just bought from you. You know, the latest, greatest model. The same one all the Tour players are hitting it and all the ads and commercials say it will add 20 yards to my tee shots. But I just can't hit it worth a darn. I'm hooking it, slicing it. I even topped a few today."

The old Pro looks at the hack and nods his head, "Yep, sounds like you've got a loft problem."

The old hack replies "But Pro, this is the same driver you fit for me. You said it was the right loft and everything."

The Pro looks at the hack and says, "No, you big dummie, I mean LOFT...L - O - F -T...Lack Of F*ing Talent..."

True story...
