I think the most effective change NASCAR could make right now to win back some of the fans that have left would be to do away with the restrictor plate. Drivers back in the day knew the dangers of going over 200 mph, and even though there were a couple of horrendous wrecks, I don't remember anyone getting killed because of the speed. I do remember Bobby Allison's horrible crash, and a few cars going airborne, but I also think the safety of the cars has improved tremendously since the addition of restrictor plates, and the drivers respect the limits for the most part. But that's part of what racing should be. It's a dangerous sport. I honestly think the restrictor plates make the sport more dangerous because of the inability of drivers to drive away from trouble, if that makes sense.
