buzzsawBeaver 12 Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 "WEIR FACES THE long road to Bluefield this weekend for its Class AA quarterfinal game with the Beavers. But the Red Riders will get a boost from one of their most-famous alumni and the hottest football player in the state. As part of the seven-hour planned trip to its hotel in Princeton, Weir plans to practice Friday morning at Mountaineer Field under the watch of WVU tailback Quincy Wilson. Wilson led the Red Riders to the 1998 AA state championship over DuPont. This is Weir's first playoff appearance since that season. "This can't be about the trip, and I keep telling the kids that," said Coach Tony Filberto, who was an assistant in 1997 when Weir traveled to Bluefield for an AA semifinal. "We're going to enjoy the journey, stop and visit with Quincy, and get ready to go play a very good football team. "It doesn't matter if the trip is three hours or six hours." Kickoff between Weir (9-2) and Bluefield (10-1) is set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Stadium"
Lance 228 Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 That's awesome. I like it when teams do that sort of thing.
buzzsawBeaver 12 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 That's a wise coaching move. It inspires the players, it makes it more fun rather than business like, which is an advantage, and more than anything, after practicing at wv's stadium, they are much less likely to be intimidated at mitchell stadium. Lance 228 Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 yeah, perhaps Grundy might stop off in Tazewell and get a hot dog at the Pop Shop or something.

Sources 10 Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 Good strategy by the Weir coaching staff and also very down to earth of Wilson to still have a hand in his former high school football program.
mvfan26 10 Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 In a way Quincy could help to motivate them even more than they already will be, but at the same time there is another side of the story. The bad side of it is the fact that the kids from Weir probably see Quincy as a huge role model to them, so after getting a pep talk from him on Friday it may cause them to put more pressure on themselves to make him proud, and if that's the case the added pressure may be too much for them. Not trying to be negative or anything. I just think that things like this can at times go either way. No matter which way it affects Weir I think as long as Bluefield comes out and plays to their ability they will come out on top.
Bluefield_Rules 46 Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 As MVfan fan said, that won't make a difference if Bluefield comes out and plays as they're capable of. Wilson can give them a pep talk, but he cannot put the pads on and play for them anymore...
beaverball 10 Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 They better bring Quincy WITH THEM AND LET HIM PLAY if they expect to win. lol
