total 12 Report Share Posted December 16, 2004 the ball was spread around too much, so they didn't have the stats.

Bluefield_Rules 46 Author Report Share Posted December 16, 2004 [ QUOTE ] the ball was spread around too much, so they didn't have the stats. [/ QUOTE ] Exactly. The carries at Beaver have been spread too evenly over the past three years for any of the backs to put up big-time stats. As I said on TSP though, I'm sure no one on the team would trade the succcess of the team for more individual recognition.

WeirFootball 10 Report Share Posted December 16, 2004 For the second year in a row, Weir High has had the 1st team defensive captain, with Turner last year and Cooper this year. Turner was ineligible this year but will be joining WVU's team next year along with Cooper. Hopefully Coop will bring home the Huff Award because he definitely deserves it. Congratulations to everyone who was selected to the team!
Sources 10 Report Share Posted December 17, 2004 No offense to Turner, but he shouldn't have been given first team defensive captain. That honor should have went to Kelly Mariotti. Turner was given that as "back pay" for him not getting offensive first team and for his excellent performance against Bluefield.

Eric Turner was the best player in AA last year, and one of the best in any class, hands down. Mariotti was not better than Turner. He had such a good game on offense against Bluefield that you didn't see what he could do on defense. If I'm not mistaken, he had 7 INT's and 80+ tackles from his safety position. He definitely deserved it and could have been the offensive captain instead of Santmyer. Santmyer won it b/c Poca went to and won the state championship. Santmyer was a great player, but either captain could have easily went to Tuner.
buzzsawBeaver 12 Report Share Posted December 17, 2004 I'm commonly 1 to do nothing but write congrats to all who were awarded all state, or whatever awards, and in that respects I do intend it, congrats to them all, especially their efforts. But that said it seems to me the awards themselves are political. Those who award them obviously have an interest in not being particularly biased towards a few teams, even if they really have most of the better players. t.j. morris, "honorable mention" on d as an example, who are we kidding here? The all state awards should be loaded with bluefield and weir players more so than it is in my opinion, which I admitt, is also biased. But the results of the stronger contenders in aa speak for themselves. But even so, congrats to all.

I have alot of respect for Santmyer because not only was he a hardnosed player, but a great leader for his team as well. He got it done against Bluefield. WeirFootball 10 Report Share Posted December 17, 2004 I'm sorry, but you can't compare a player that plays at WVU and one that plays at Concord. I have a lot of respect for Mariotti and think he was an outstanding football player, but he is not the athlete Turner is. If he was, Turner wouldn't have lit up the scoreboard and the stat sheet w/ 3 TD's and 200+ yds receiving that game. I believe he was playing safety and neither him or the triple coverage they eventually put on Turner could slow him down. Yes Bluefield won the game, but Turner had his way w/ the Bluefield D!!! Sources 10 Report Share Posted December 17, 2004 Mariotti never played at Concord, I think you and I both know that. It's also unfair to claim someone plays at WVU when we both know they were academically ineligible this year.

OU81 10 Report Share Posted December 18, 2004 what does any of this have to do with THIS years all state team???? this would be an unending argument.... weir says turner is the best in aa LAST YR, we say marriotti, poca says santmyer, montcalm say calhoun... everyone will be biased

Sources 10 Report Share Posted December 19, 2004 My only real complaint with the all-state selections is the fact that Tracy Coppola and T.J. Morris got snubbed for second team. Either one of them were far better defensive players than Ryan Albert, with no disrespect meant to him.
bluefieldRocks 14 Report Share Posted December 20, 2004 Wasnt it tracy coppola or daniel wells that led the team in tackles this year anyways?
beaverbaseball 10 Report Share Posted December 20, 2004 Yes both Tracy and Daniel had around 90 tackles to lead the team.
