Thursday Night Only scores (Radford, Gretna, Appo)
GilesBandanaMan replied to GilesBandanaMan's topic in SWVA Football
Alleghany leads 20 to 9 halftime. Radford has put up a good fight, but Alleghany (now 4-0) is just too much. For Graham fans, keep an eye on Alleghany as this team will be the one to determine if you play on your home field in the state semis IF....IF Graham and Glenvar makes it that far. Glenvar plays Radford next week and will likely win. Not a sure win, but likely win. That leaves Glenvar with game left on the schedule which they could lose and finish 9-1, and that's in 2 weeks at Alleghany. Alleghany is favored over Glenvar right now by Calpreps, but that's a big game and if Glenvar loses, they finish 9-1, and if they win, they are likely 10-0. Lots of football left and no disrespect to Union or Gretna. I'm just giving a scenario for Grahsm and Glenvar IF...they meet in game 14. The Glenvar at Alleghany in 2 weeks is huge and might decide who plays at home Graham or Glenvar. -

Early 2nd qtr 6 to 6 all tied up as Alleghany again gets deep inside Radford territory and down to the Radford 12, but Radford tightens up and keeps em out of the endzone and Alleghany has to settle for a field goal -

6 to 3 Radford leads in the late first qtr, Two point conversion was no good -
Late first qtr. Alleghany 3, Radford 0 capitalizing on a 55 yd drive after a Radford interception. Alleghany had first and goal at the 5 and Radford stuffed em back to the 12 as Alleghany settled for the field goal.

Appomattox vs Gretna is tonight. Through 4 losses and starting 0-4, Appo has given up 206 points averaging 51.5 pts per game. In their defense (figuratively) the 4 teams combined record is 14 wins and 1 loss in Buckingham, Rustburg, Heritage, and Botetourt. Game 5 for Appo tonight is Gretna who only has 1 loss on the season, and game 6 is undefeated Altavista. Strong argument for Appo playing a tougher schedule than any Class 2 team in Virginia and that includes Richlands and Poquoson (who tangles with huge schools) on the coast.

I called, but was placed 2nd in the que. Apparently, some guy with the last name of Vaughn or something like that was ahead of me.

Radford vs Alleghany tonight and on NFHS and Appo vs Gretna tonight

I understand its a connection to Lee County, so technically your statement still applies as he could then transfer to Union. Tic

They also got Henderson. He is Lancasters (recent class 1 state champion) star player and a D1 kid and is committed to Fordham. The transfer and recent VHSL Class 1 POY and D1 commit Henderson, may actually NOT start at John Marshall. Imagine what teams are dealing with. Auburn was good and lost a game in the finals to Lancaster (very close) in which the Henderson kid just dominated for his team. He is an absolute stud and would start for likely any team in Virginia and not just start, but be a star at over 90 percent of teams and now......he may actually not start at John Marshall. What does that say about how good their starting 5 is and matching that up with other Class 2 teams? Literally zero chance.

Ridgeview will score more than 50 pts. 51 to 24 Ridgeview

Goose, where the Bears can help themselves is by hitting some of those short middle of the field passes that go for 15 yds because........in High School across the country, very few teams can drive the ball 75 yds by running the ball WITHOUT getting at least one hold or motion penalty. It just rarely happens. Union can get away with the 1st and 20 against an average opponent and overcome it but against a Graham it's tough to overcome. That's why a few more plays (intermediate passing middle of field) where Union could get more chunks in the 12 to 15 yd variety really starts to decrease the odds of the holding calls on run plays. To go 75 yds on the ground against a solid D, you have to be near perfect (no holds or motions) and it's actually somewhat rare in High School/very hard to do.

There are great HS stadiums and there are great HS stadiums that are elite and special. Legion field is the latter. Heck of a place. My second favorite place to watch a HS game is Legion Field.

Time will tell. Ridgeview is still very good and when the Wolfpack plays Union, we will known how they stack up. If Graham and Union play again, a 10 pt win or more for either team would surprise me. Now, that's based on where both teams are at right now. Whichever team improves the most and has the fewest injuries obviously stands the best chance in game 2.

Been saying it for over 5 years on here. -
Would be cool. The only problem with scheduled Monday games is that there's no margin for error if anything happens regarding weather, logistics, or heavens forbid the classic bomb threat that seems more and more common. You don't have any leadway to reschedule the game.

I was there for Georgia Tech. Hit a ditch with about 3 feet of water, lost footing but stayed upright barely. Was about 250 yds from Corso's rental car. That game is one where the lightening was too much, needed to be cancelled and the other story is....Georgia Tech could have made the game up, but chicken chickens. Took me nearly 18 months to get my refund for the game. Looking back on it nearly 25 years later a great time with family and friends, especially trying to get to the car

If someone knows just a little bit about football and they know nothing about Union and Graham and they see 2 key items. 1. Score was 7-6 2. Turnovers were even at 1 each if I recall correctly. Based simply on those 2 items above, it's more than reasonable to conclude the 2 teams are very close in level of play and that in a rematch, there is zero surprise (assuming no key injuries) that if either team wins or loses, it's not a surprise and actually, not an upset for whoever wins/loses. If Union loses 7 to 6 and Graham had 5 turnovers to Unions 1 turnover and Graham had 380 total yds to Union's 180ish total yds, then yes I'm worried a lot about my chances to beat Graham in game 2, but that's not the way it went down.

Agree and sadly it's both. VHSL and money and gait money locally for schools and pansies not wanting to deal with the "anxiety" of getting wet. What ever happened to the principal (both Biblical and Secular) that a little pain gives gain or "no pain-no gain." I'm not saying openly volunteer to have a picnic in a 3 inch rainstorm, but on the occasion a game is going on and there's severe rain, is it that intolerable for the average American to be just a touch uncomfortable for 2 hours? Incredible to me.

Well how about the obvious? When does Tech play Miami again?

"You don't want to go to war with the GMen.............at the goalline." Their lethally good at the one foot line. There was a game in late 2000sish (maybe 2008?) where Graham and Bluefield had a downright nail biter finish where the Beavers had the ball inside the one and a play similar to Graham and Union occurred and the refs ruled the Bluefield QB did not get in as time expired. This play is on YouTube somewhere.
