Beard will force him to play defense to see the court, which given his historic lack of drive and desire on that end, is the very best thing for him.  Much improvement to do on that end (and with lateral quickness) to sniff an NBA roster, but this gives him the very best chance to do so.  Great fit, it appears.

Agree 100%.  Lateral quickness will be/is a huge issue for him when talking about the NBA level.  Even with desire and good coaching to get better defensively, does he have the lateral quickness to cover at the NBA level.  One thing he does have to his advantage to compensate is his arm length and ups.  He has long arms and 6'2 is more like 6'3 or 6'4 with his wingspan, but he had insane hops which can allow him to play off at least a little bit to anticipate the dribble.  It will be interesting to see.  I hope he makes it.  He's in a good program and I'm sure he knows and understands that much like UVA, same for Texas Tech, if you don't play defense, you don't play, period.

My wife is a teacher in WV.  We have studied and studied the maps vs. the actual statistical data coming out of Charleston, and there is no logical sense that can be made of the color maps.  The data doesn’t match anything put out by WVBOE.  A good attorney with a statistical background could carve the WVSSAC and the WVBOE like a Thanksgiving turkey in court.

Yes, they should sue.  And they should win.

    If only I could help.

A huge issue I see, is the following.  In AA, Oak Glenn is a higher seed than Fairmont.  In AAA, Cabell Midland is the number one seed ahead of South Charleston (the 2 seed).  That's a problem for WV right there.  If it would have worked out where all that was left, for example........... if Fairmont was the number one seed coming in and South Charleston the number one seed coming in, then maybe the issue isn't as big (I don't know).

In Single A, St. Mary's, who will be crowned the single A champion was the highest remaining seed and they would have shi* kicked the winner of the other game, which likely would have been Ritchie County.  St. Mary's was the far away best team in Single A and at least WV kind of a** backwards got it right in Single A, but in AA and AAA, it's ugly, or like the Giles Hokie said, it's a joke.   I can't help but feel bad for teams like Bridgeport and Cabell Midland in AAA or Oak Glenn in AA.  Oak Glenn had a bunch of seniors and was just annihilating opponents this year.

  3. Final Score:  Fairmont 21, Bluefield 19.

Beavers down 21-12 with 4 minutes left and Fairmont with the ball inside the Bluefield 20 yd line and fumbles.  Bluefield recovers and goes down the field and scores with about 2 minutes left to make it 21-19.  Bluefield didn't recover the onside kick and Fairmont crabbed 2 first downs running the ball forcing the Beavers to use up their timeouts and time expired.  Heck of a hard fought comeback by the young and gritty Beavers.

Would Fairmont be the favorite over the other two teams that had their game cancelled?

They would be favored over Robert C. Byrd.  It would be a pick em with Oak Glenn, which is a school located about as far North in the State of WV as you can go and is actually more North of Pittsburgh (not far from Pittsburgh either-40 miles).  Oak Glenn was favored by 13 points tomorrow over Robert C. Byrd according to Calpreps.   Nothing official, but Calpreps had it 35-22 in favor of Oak Glenn over Robert C. Byrd.  Oak Glenn and Fairmont would be considered a toss up game.  Either team/50/50 game.  Which is why is really sucks if the policy isn't changed.

  5. 5 pm Map just released and it's ugly.  No games will be played at Charleston.  St. Mary's is the Single A State Champion with its win today.  South Charleston is the AAA State Champion, and this............Bluefield vs Fairmont game is the  State Title Game.  The winner is the AA state champion.

  6. Guys, been reading this thread.  Perhaps we have some Appalachian Bubble Vision (I'm guilty of that many times).  Texas Tech just played for a national title.  Their coach and staff is among the BEST in America.  They are in the Big 12, but what many of you may not know about Texas Tech is........they have a HUGE Conglomerate.  It's one of the largest schools in the country and in the Southwest, trust me, Texas Tech has prowess.  The exposure comparing Texas Tech and Georgetown isn't in the same ballpark.  The kid wasn't getting the ball enough at Georgetown and it was obvious.  Texas Tech is bigger.  He plays for a team that is ranked in the top 13 in the country (possibly another final four team as the Red Raiders are very good again (and he's leading them in scoring).  The dude made a brilliant choice and of all the schools mentioned, he went to the right one.  He also went to the best one with the best basketball program at this very time.  Texas Tech is going to be there with Kansas and West Virginia to battle it out for a Big 12 Title and likely the Raiders will be a top 4 seed when all is said and done.  The kid made a brilliant choice.  The only better choice out of all of those schools mentioned as potential transfer material would have been BYU (homer I am).

  7. UVA, are you licensed in West-by-God? I have a feeling your services are going to be needed because they are about to legally "arm up" in New Cumberland. With Oak Glenn having a senior laden football team and what they feel is their best shot ever to get a ring, those cats are going to go nuts up there.

    Back in WV...

Two AAA teams (Bridgeport & South Charleston) could advance to the State Title game without playing in the Semifinals this week, both Cabell Midlalnd and Musselman will rely upon the outcome of the Covid Map to see if they will be able to play on Sunday.

In AA, Oak Glen finds itself in the same position as Cabell Midland and Musselmant.

In A, there is only on Semifinal game this weekend as Ritchie Co. has advanced to the Title game by beating Greenbrier West last weekend in the quarterfinals.

Wow, that's a big deal for Oak Glen.  I've been researching them some the past few days and it looks like they are actually good enough to win a state title.  Not saying they would or will, but from what I've read, looking at their scores, talking to officials who have had them, they are very, very good and good enough to beat any of the 3 remaining teams including Bluefield and Fairmont.  If Oak Glen doesn't play in the semi's, the Bluefield and Fairmont winner may have got a gift.  CalPreps has Oak Glen by 11 over R.C. Byrd.   I know a few people down this way have penciled in Bluefield or Fairmont as the state champs, but I'm telling ya guys, Oak Glen is just as good or better this year than Bluefield or Fairmont.

I don't know if rousing success would be the right word, having playoff games called off minutes before kickoff is a pretty big snafu.

If VA could have a season with no playoff games cancelled, it would be a rousing success. Tennessee has had pretty good luck but they've also had their fair share of issues.

But those things are going to happen.  We knew they would with Covid.  I guess we just accept it.  The virus hits when it wants to hit.  TN and WV have made adjustments on the fly, even if 5 minutes before kickoff.  We knew there would be cancellations and things and this is more due to Covid 19, not the people running the state athletics organizations.  I applaud them, they have tried to drive on with a season and they have put there foot down to keep the public safe, even if 5 minutes before kickoff.  It's not an easy juggling act, but it's just that, it's a juggling act.

  10. Many made an assumption, that when VA cancelled the season in the fall and moved it to spring, then automatically, it will be good to go other than playing in the cold.  There were some out there who warned about this governor and clearly made the statement that.........assuming Virginia plays in the spring is a done deal is a dangerous assumption and there is no guarantee.  I think that still holds true.  I think it's 50/50 that Virginia has a season in the spring.  And if that happens, WV all of a sudden looks pretty good and the decision not to transfer out of Virginia in assuming the spring was automatic is going to be chalked up to a year of missed football.

  11. Give WV credit.  They tried and didn't cancel the season.  If you were going to play football in the fall, you were going to have a clusterf.  With Covid 19, that was a given.  WV has done their best to meet the challenges of an ever changing virus that drops off, comes back, takes a rest, then returns hard, etc.  Many fans would choose clusterf over no football at all.  WV knew what it was doing.  They knew the virus would cause issues and ebbs and flows, and that they would literally, by the week, have to make adjustments.  I don't think they've done a bad job.  I give em credit for trying.  By the way, if you are a Bluefield Beaver, this season isn't a clusterf at all, lol.  It's an opportunity for another state title, and the Beavers might just pull it off.

I will always choose effort over simply throwing in the towel and just bailing out.  Most would probably say that WV really messed this thing up and it wasn't pretty and they kind of failed.  OK, that's fine.  I still applaud the effort to give a go any day.

  12. I think its solved then.  I've read this thread for arguments of 4 and 6.  It seems like this discussion everywhere seems to have strong pro's and con's with 4 and 6.  Like I wrote earlier, split the difference and go to 5 classes.  5 is easy.  No change needed, you don't need a nickle and 1 penny (6 classes) and you don't need 4 pennies (4 classes), you just need a straight up ole nickle, lol.  With 5, I still think it's good enough to where the playoffs and state titles are not devalued, and I think if you have 5, a team that was likely going to win a state title with 6 classes will still win it with 5 classes.

Now, if you want some real cool stuff that will never happen again unfortunately because of money.  Return the state championships back to the local schools.  We used to rotate every 2 years when it was like this with the East getting 2 years of field and the West getting 2 years of home field, etc.  Lets have those state title games back on the homefield's of Giles, Graham, Union, Richlands, or Rustburg, William Campbell, Riverheads, etc.  Wishful thinking here.

  13. UVA Observer, keep in mind that VA has about 4 to 1 schools in amount compared to WV.  In Virginia, for every Bluefield Beaver, there are at least 3 others.  Just mathematical odds based on the volume of teams in VA compared to WV.  So, if one says there are roughly 6, maybe up to 7 or 8 schools in VA's Class 2A equal, small 3A (WV AA), that could play with the top 2 AA schools in WV, this is correct and should be that way based on the number of schools in Virginia.   Same for single A in West Virginia.  For the best team in WEST VA single A ball, there should be at least 3 or 4 equals to that school in Virginia (for that same size level-approximate classification).

Oak Glen is very good on the other side of the bracket. They have nice players. They are either cousins or brothers. Their last name is Patterson.

Yep, I don't know much about them, but by looking at their scores and comparing with common opponents across the state, etc, it sounds like Oak Glenn could propose a challenge for the Beavers if they meet.  I hope they don't propose a challenge if they meet, but it looks like they are pretty good.  Cal Preps has this game in favor of Oak Glenn by a score of 31 to 26 over the Beavers.
