  1. Guys like Leach and Mumme relied on statue QBs and wide formations. When people talk about the spread, its like a code for read option out of a shotgun. Leach, Mumme nor Martz ever incorporated that element into their offenses. It has its roots in the early single wing style with motion and reading the DL/LBs before deciding who runs, but it also has WRs on the field and incorporates more RPOs than old single wing or veer offenses. A 'spread offense', at least to me, read as an offense that uses a read from the QB and 11 or empty personnel packages. Leach is big into empty or 11 sets, but his offense to me was more four verts, mesh, and y-cross, extremely wide splits and hurrying up between plays. He just took the run and shoot (2 outside WR, two slot WR) and made it more effective by mixing more trips formations and sped it up to 11. LaVell Edwards was doing a lot of that stuff at BYU in the 80s before Leach and Mumme, with guys like Young, McMahaon and Detmer. Houston really perfected it during the 80s early 90s with Klinger and Ware, and when defenses adjusted guys like Leach, Mumme and Dykes made adjustments and perfected their air raid. Compare that to Urban Meyer and Gus Malzahan, two modern godfathers of the spread, use the formation more as a power run formation and a lot of screens and misdirection. Looking at what Meyer did at BG with Josh Harris or at UF w Tebow or Malzahan with Cam or Nick Marshall, the complexity of pass routes is nowhere near an air raid or west coast style bc it relies more on a feel, a QB having more defined reads and the ability to take off in the pass game and a power run style to loosen up a defense.
  2. I favor Battle more so. Lees a solid team, but Battle knows they can win this year and its a big difference just in mindset. They also did well against Collier and GC and he's basically Pendergraft on steroids (not literally an expression) and its at JSB. I'd say its tight, but Battle pulls out a TD win.
  3. Yeah Pennington, he caught Lee's first TD v. Union. Made a great play on a very good cover corner.
  4. Not sure anyone wants to to Graham either, when you've got the best RB in your classification and a QB capable of running and throwing you can beat anybody. Graham had Richlands like Union did but couldn't hold on, or else they'd be 10-0 and the clear #1 seed.
  5. Pendergraft can make plays. Assuming all Lee has is Rasnic is a big mistake esp on offense. Pendergraft and the outside WR, #2 maybe? both are excellent playmakers.
  6. They'd at least be at home, so that's a big advantage. What style is Dan River? I don't know much about them at all.
  7. Didn't you guys fumble a bunch last night and still rail Floyd?
  8. Any chance 9-1 Graham outpoints 9-1 Appo if Amherst wins?
  9. But a loss could send Union to a lower seed? Hmm... It'd have helped if Floyd had a better team, Glenvar would get more points for beating them. And I'm just a random Union fan, but we've played Richlands every year and Graham last year. Kinda know those teams as compared to DR/Appo. I'd rather end up playing Richlands/Graham,much shorter road trips of nothing else. Its all speculation tho, a 5/12 with Union hosting a much improved GC team is tough enough.
  10. I know Amherst is bigger school but what probability would you set that at happening? 25%? Higher/lower? Union fans will be biggest Amherst fans in the state that week.
  11. Kinda expected Floyd to at least have a decent showing v. Giles. I know Giles got back one of their guys and are playing better now than early in season but Floyd had absolutely nothing for them.
  12. I'm bias, but Union has a couple on the DL that are absolutely as good as anyone I've seen this year at DL.
  13. Except fly. Trust me dude, its impossible. I jumped off a lot of stuff as a kid with homemade wings. Flying is something we just can't do lol.
  14. So Richlands controlled LOS v. Graham? That surprises me, Union did well in the LOS against Richlands, I'd go as far as saying Union won the LOS v. Richlands.
  15. If Union lost one of last two games, would they fall to 6-7? Damnit need tonfind a points expert.
  16. Fuck that's what I thought but wasn't 100%. Beating a 4-seed Dan River on the road seems like a huge task but even if a 5 seed somehow did that, get rewarded with a trip to defending state champ, the 10-0 one seed. You assholes just couldn't let us win over there earlier this year? Itd have made things way more interesting lol
  17. Union has too travel to Battle to end season, and while Union would likely still win tiebreaker, if Battle wins, it'd be three teams with 1-conference loss. I know everyone expects Union to win, but it's a road conference game and Battle is much much improved. GC played Union very close at GC as well, Union managed a win but Battle was only one yard away from likely sealing a win and making the finale a game for the conference. Union seems to be playing very well, they coulve literally scored 100 or named score last nig but Eastside is terrible, but a game against a tough Letcher Co school followed by a road trip to Battle are two very tough games. Just hope Union realizes how important winning out really is.
  18. I was gonna mention both those teams as well but I dont know 1AW as well as 2AW. Looks like Wise Central could be on outside looking in as well.
  19. I like how Union, despite being the potential five seed, is merely an afterthought lol. Its a good thing, its easier bsin the hunter (this season) than the hunted (last year). If anyone else besides Appo gets the #1, it makes anything possible. Just read Amherst lost their QB so there's slim chance of anyone slipping up Appo, but a guy can dream. (If I'm looking right, in second round if chalk, #5 seed travels to #4 while #8 goes to one on one side while 2 hosts 7 and 3 hosts 6. Then the lowest seed goes to top remaining seed, then follows like that right? Or is it set sides okf a bracket? Say 5 beats 4 but somehow 6-7 beat two or three, would 5 still go to 1 or would the lowest seed go on road to the 1-seed?)
  20. Ridgeview. lol
  21. I admit seeing how well Battle is playing, how close they game at a red hot GC team, def has me worried about Unions season ending trip to Battle.
  22. Yes. It was most miserable game I can remember, I was young but I remember it clear as day. A muddy mess, not quite freezing cold but cold enough and just a horrible experience haha. We won, I can't imagine how crappy it woulkdve been if we had lost lol. I had to get new socks three tines, my uncle had to loan me socks because jus being a kid I got my feet wet and was froze to death. It rained like 97 or 98 GC/PV at GC, if you remember that game. That's what the rain was like plus being cold.
  23. Falcons hold on, Asbury takes late sack. I'm def shocked.
  24. GC-16 Battle-13 Final
  25. No a big ass van with like 12 people. You could prob make it in 8, 8.5 hours if you drove straight.
