Yes, they did. Lost 30-6 in the semi's. Appy scored once per quarter. Their passing was what killed Narrows that day. Travis Turner was a freshman and threw for over 200 and 3 of their 4 scores were from pass plays. Had drives stall inside their red zone twice late to keep Narrows from getting back in it. Gave 'em a game. At least a better game than they got the next week. Including the write up from the Roanoke TImes.
Not been to a game this year, just keeping up with box scores. I know Graham and GC are both good, are they the top of the region? Who could sneak in and possibly make a run on the boys side?
1994 was rough to GIles with injuries. If not for them, may have had a PV/Giles, Appalachia/Narrows doubleheader that weekend in Big Stone. That'd been a lot of fun.
Did Narrows play Appalachia in BSG that year? That 1994 Appalachia team was absolutely NASTY good, they scored like 70 in the state title game.
It is overly influenced by a handful of teams and it is waaaay too biased toward winning teams. There was a kid on one of the VHSL teams that was completely embarrassed in a playoff game this year but his team went far in the playoffs.
In the past I've seen really good defensive players get snubbed because they didn't have the stats due to OC's avoiding them. Happens every year. I'd love to see how the OCs and DCs vote....take the "Rah, rah" HC out of the equation. The coordinators know which kids scare them and drive gameplans.
I have a feeling I know who you’re talking about but if I’m correct, that one game was really the only terrible game the kid played. I’m not sure if the player deserved all state but I think all region for sure.
The 1994 game was the second week of the regular season, not a playoff game. I was home visiting for a few weeks and went to the game with some friends. I don't remember much about the game other than thinking I would like to see Thomas Jones and Raypheal Milton play against each other.
Radford played my brothers Grayson team the following week. Radford finished that season 8-3 with 2 loses to Giles.
You’re right, the dates posted weren’t right. It was a very fast game, not a lot of passes until the very end to Zirkle that got PV in FG range.
I went back and watched the 1994 playoff game between Powell Valley and Radford on YouTube. What do you guys remember about that night? It was 24-21, a great game. I think the Cats got Thomas Jones on the ground more than any high school team I’ve seen. A very good Radford team who coulda knocked off a very good PV team that would go back to back state champs.
Why are you even bringing Union into this? Glenvar would roll them and it's not even up for discussion. Fact is Radford scored with 10 seconds left to beat Glenvar by 5 and they beat Graham by double digits....you can doll it up all you want, but thay is the facts....Gretna lost to 4a powerhouse Jefferson Forest by 3 and undefeated 3a powerhouse Magna Vista by 1. Gretna is no slouch and would also roll Union. You guys need to see football outside your bubble.
lol okay. Union lost to a 5A TN school by 21 that would smash JF or MV, their only loss. If Gretna was so good, why didn’t they beat Glenvar? Radford also beat Glenvar by damn near 40, funny you didn’t mention that. That’s a fact too, sweetheart. Why are you bringing Glenvar or Gretna up then? Gretna didn’t even make the 2C final and Glenvar lost in the same game Union did.
this thread should be about Radford and their amazing season, not this dumb squabbling over who’s 2-6. You decided to try and rank the teams and try and belittle 2D football, I’m sorry you feel the need to do that.
And to anyone who is looking at points is taking out the flow of the game and the matchup. Fact is, Graham, Radford, Riverheads, Union were all close. Radford was a bad matchup for Riverheads. All 4 teams were close in my opinion. I think Radford had 5 more total yds than Graham in their contest if I read correctly. Graham was 2 dropped TD passes from having a very strong chance to come away with the win. Riverheads was not 2 pass drops short. Radford handled them. Union would have matched up better than Graham against Radford in my opinion. Graham would have matched up better against Riverheads than Union in my opinion.
Much of it is about matchups. All 4 were close. The best team won the title, and Riverheads was anywhere from the 2nd best team to the 4th best team in my opinion.
Agreed. Radford a clear and far #1 then Graham, Union, Riverheads were 2-4. Whoever won the West was gonna be a bad matchup for Riverheads with the run defenses but I think Union, with the athleticism of the QB and on the outside, would be a tougher matchup than Graham who liked to attack between the hashes.
Just a phenomenal season for the Cats. Clark was the best QB I’ve seen in the West in years but it was far from a one man show. They were strong at the LOS, swarmed on runs and just ate up teams with the elite secondary. I’m super impressed by them.
So who’s good?

Would you be shocked to see either Auburn or Lancaster win it all? Is Millions still at Auburn?
