From my understanding it wasn’t just the sophomore class. Heard numerous rumors that Lebanons senior class (which has a ton of athletes in basketball and baseball) didn’t play because the coach had a history of getting his players hurt.

Sounds like Miami coach Mike McDaniel I think they had around 12 starters out in the playoff game who was starting day 1

I saw that.  I'm not too sure about that choice.  I don't think that was a full-ride (judging by the verbiage)....could be wrong.  If it is a PWO, I don't know if going as PWO for Deion is a good move, especially if some of his other offers are committable full-rides.

I watched his film and couldn't decipher if they see him as TE or DE.  I bet they like that 6'5", 220lb frame that also plays basketball, though.

Speaking of walk-ons....has anyone heard how the Union DE from last year (Gabe?) that went to UVA is doing or how Brody Jone at VT is doing?

Gabe Sneed and I’m not sure if he’s still at uva or not

I agree Duke, but the problem is, it's a different team playing them each year and each team has the thought of, 'this is our chance, win or lose, we made it to the title game and are runners up." If you had a situation like at Radford where Radfords players and coaches would have stayed/not retired and Radford loses 2 or 3 state titles in a row to JM and gets blown out, then by the 3rd or 4th go around, they say enough is enough and don't show up. But as long as we keep rotating teams, for example Radford or East Rock or Gate City or possibly Graham or Floyd this year, it will never end. You need one elite powerhouse from the West that is nearly a sure bet each year to play JM so they can lose and get tired of it, but the days of Gate City, Martinsville, and now Radford are about over.

I’m just glad Union got lucky and avoided them during the Covid season.  Is their anyone in the state who can beat them other than the private schools???

I watched GC for first time last night. Graham's better by 6 to 7 points. The entire region is the worst for not just 2D, but also 2C that I've seen since the turn of the century, 23 years. Not only that, region 2B is turrrrrrible. Graham has had probably 8 or 9 teams, maybe more........that are better than this 2023 team since the year 2000, and this years Graham team has a very strong chance to play for a state title against the East, JM. The state of Virginia in Class 2 is that down this year. Worst I've ever seen in my lifetime or memory of HS basketball. This isn't hyperbole. I'm giving my opinion.

The best 3 teams in the state are from 1 region. JM, Greensville County, and Bruton, and if Brunswick wouldn't have dropped from Class 2 down to class 1, it would be 4 teams as 1,2,3, and 4th best from one region (Region A). P.S Floyd is the best in 2C, and they are right there with Graham, but they don't alarm you with the eye test either.

Hell I wouldn’t even wanna make it to state in 2a just to get embarrassed.  Honestly wish the team wouldn’t show up to play JM.  Only way anything will ever be done to fix that situation is vhsl losing money

    You're right...

I can see now where I was perhaps a little bit harsh.

Based on the responses looks like majority agrees with you.

I should've said "I don't like this tournament" and left it at that.

Holiday tournaments to me are supposed to be about fresh matchups that aren't likely to be seen or at the very least maybe a future playoff rematch later down the road.

I agree with you on the tournament needing different teams.  The coal classic that was in Appalachia back in the day was way better than this.  If I remember correctly half the teams were from Virginia and the other half Kentucky teams

In 88, it was Pennington and Jonesville. In 87 it was Pennington and Appalachia. In 1988, Appy went into the PV game ranked #1 in the state. The upset loss to PV took all the steam out of them and imo the carry over resulted in the loss to Jonesville the following week, but they were probably the best team in Division 1 or 2. They had beaten Pennington earlier in the year and unless in mistaken, Jonesville too. 1988 Appy is one of the best teams ever from SWVA not to win a state title. They were loaded.

The 93 Appy team imo was the best team they ever and one of the best teams I’ve seen even though they lost the game late to middlesex.  Lost the game at kickoff since they played a suspended player due to a court ruling I was told.  They returned the favor the following season winning 72-7

Folks the lesson learned is never EVER EVER EVER leave a game early.

    Arby's Classic game 11 final.

    Imhotep 58, Maryville 52

Red Rebels led 46-19 when I left mid third quarter.

Panthers outscored Murvil 39-6 the remainder of the game to pull off one of the most improbable victories in Arby's History.

To put this in perspective, the Red Rebels were 3 points away from the running clock being implemented for the reminder of the game. Just absolutely unbelievable.

Maryville will play Dobyns-Bennett in the final game of tomorrow's early session in what could be a preview of a TSSAA 4A sweet 16 matchup later down the road.

Imhotep will play Mater Lakes in tomorrow nights quarterfinal four.

Yeah I would’ve left early and missed it too.  Like I did a few years back when Richlands was beating Union somewhere around 28-0 and of course I leave and they come back

Boy they do beat up on Filipowski don't they, or everyone for that matter...  We need another Grayson Allen to even the terms.  Lol

I’ve been a Duke fan since late 80s and this is the softest team I’ve ever seen them have

Good point. My honest answer is.....Nope.  Just watching that kid play, man what a freakin beast.  The way that kid exploded off the ball with not just speed, but god awful upper body and leg strength was crazy impressive (in my opinion) for a Class 2 Defensive End.

Awards should go to the best talent like you said but I guess it’s like professional sports where it’s a popularity test

Agree with the above except leaving off a Div 1 kid (one of only a few in Class 2) in Marion's Coe. There's no way there are 4 better defensive ends in Virginia's Class 2 than Coe.

It’s because they mainly pick players off the teams who go deep in playoffs with a few exceptions

  12. 1 Graham

    2 Union

    3 Tazewell

    4 Ridgeview

    5 Gate City

If Union can figure out the QB situation they could be #1 but after hearing Tazewell has so many starters back I could see them being the best and if Graham can replace Clements they could be the best so to sum it all up I don’t know but we should see some great football next season

WHO IS THE SECOND BEST TEAM IN 2A?

    ***FACTORS CONSIDERED:

--Marion scored 22 points on Va High, while Graham scored only 20

--Marion scored 40 points against Lebanon in game shortened for weather at 4:20 in the 3Q. A proportional calculation results in Marion scoring 60 points on the Pioneers over 4 quarters, while Graham scored only 59.

--Radford defeats both Graham and Riverheads

    CONCLUSIONS:

    Marion>Graham

    Radford>Graham

    Radford>Riverheads

Therefore, Radford and Marion>Graham and Riverheads

Congratulations to the Marion Scarlet Hurricanes on being the 2nd best team in 2A!

***Any other factors that contradict this assertion, I have personally deemed irrelevant or inconsequential including head-to-head, outcomes of common opponents, W-L records, margin of victory, strength of schedule, computer rankings, and common sense.

When will you be breaking down #3

lol okay. Union lost to a 5A TN school by 21 that would smash JF or MV, their only loss. If Gretna was so good, why didn’t they beat Glenvar? Radford also beat Glenvar by damn near 40, funny you didn’t mention that. That’s a fact too, sweetheart. Why are you bringing Glenvar or Gretna up then? Gretna didn’t even make the 2C final and Glenvar lost in the same game Union did.

this thread should be about Radford and their amazing season, not this dumb squabbling over who’s 2-6. You decided to try and rank the teams and try and belittle 2D football, I’m sorry you feel the need to do that.
